I really love this episode because it dispels the myth that the Fire Nation acts of anger, fury and hatred all of the time, as if that is their destiny. Fire is, for obvious reasons, portrayed as destructive, brutal and uncontrollable to the other nations, by virtue of its actual capabilities and the Imperialism of the Fire Nation itself, but that isn't what it always was. Fire was the element of passion and life. Fire gave birth to civilisation and helped people shelter from the dark, and that same drive to escape the cold darkness drove the Fire Nation to Industrialisation and Imperialism. But it does have to be for conquest, for that same passion can be for community or love or even self-betterment but Fire, and all it represents, cannot be rid of. The Four Nations all play their part. Earth is stability, Air is Wisdom, Water is Healing and Fire is Passion. Zuko lost his ability to draw on his anger as a fuel for his fire and learnt to draw on his passion and love instead. It's a really powerful message that brute strength and power are not inherently bad traits nor is striving to be better, it's what you do with that strength and power that determines who you are.

This episode shows Toph learning earthbending from badgermoles. She had previously stated she learned the art from them in "Sokka's Master". Katara continues to be cold toward Zuko after he was finally accepted to the group in the previous episode. She remarks at the irony of him losing his firebending. The song chanted by the Sun Warriors to call forth the Masters is the same as the Avatar series ending credits song. The close-up of Aang shown as his first burst of fire is disappearing mirrors the close-up from "The Deserter" when he makes a ring of fire that results in Katara's being burned. That episode taught him the dark side of firebending and caused him to steer away from ever using it again; this one teaches him the true art, thus breaking that mental block. This is Zuko's second time flying on Appa. The first time was in "The Siege of the North, Part 2", although he was unconscious during that time. Sokka mocks Zuko by suggesting he should jump into a volcano. In the following episode, Sokka and Zuko end up in a very ironic spot Aang calls Zuko "Sifu (Master) Hotman", a reference to his knowledge of what was common slang in the Fire Nation a hundred years prior From this episode on, Zuko does not grunt in anger every time he firebends, which was something he did frequently in seasons one and two and part of season three.

The symbol of the two dragons is one of my favorite in the entire show. From my interpretation, the 2 dragons represent the 2 halves of Zuko, the avatar side and the firelord side. Division and fractured self are important motifs in Zuko's character (his scarred vs non scarred side, his 2 swords, how his face is framed in dark and light), but the dragons are by far my favorite. You might remember that Roku had a red dragon, and Sozin had a blue one. Also, in the dream Zuko had after he saved Appa, he was the firelord and was being advised by a red and blue dragon. The red dragon had the voice of Iroh, the blue had the voice of Azula. This is definitely my favorite episode in the whole show.

What i always thought was interesting was presumably after killing a dragon you would have to bring back proof of your victory. But Iroh lied which means when asked for proof Iroh would have to say, “There was nothing left for me to bring back.” And people didn’t question it because Iroh completely incinerating a dragon made sense. How powerful was young Iroh?
@candykane64805 жыл бұрын
SPOILER . . . . . . . And how powerful is Ozai? Iroh even stated he was unsure who would win in a fight against his brother. Not sure if he said that because Iroh still had a soft spot for Ozai and would hesitate to kill him, or if it's because he and Ozai are similarly matched. That's why I laughed when Jerry or Wellz (can't remember who said it) said Azula is the strongest fire bender. Iroh easily handles her on about 2-3 separate occasions. I always knew Ozai and Iroh were the strongest at this point in time
@tiawilliams56905 жыл бұрын
Very. The impression I get is that, post Roku, the Royal family are the best fire benders in the world. Even Zuko, who was shown to have struggled, is far better than anyone he's come up against, besides from his relatives.

This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. Iroh stated to Zuko in "Bitter Work" that firebending is fueled by rage and emotion, despite having known the true motivation behind the bending art. When Zuko is about to raise the golden artifact, Aang states that he is "very suspicious of giant glowing gems sitting on pedestals", most likely alluding to a similar situation concerning the booby-trapped golden idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ran and Shaw resemble the red and blue dragons from Zuko's fever-induced dream in Ba Sing Se. The Sun Warrior's architecture resembles that of Indian Buddhist Stupas and Tibetan monasteries. The bowing gesture demonstrated by the Sun Warriors during Ran and Shaw's judgement is identical to the bowing gesture demonstrated by Kwan's students in "The Headband". The final move of the Dancing Dragon is reminiscent of the "Fusion" move in Dragon Ball Z. The entire Dancing Dragon form bears a striking resemblance to the real life Long Ying Mo Kui, the traditional Southern Dragon kung-fu style. Eternal flames are common to many ancient religions. In particular, the Hebrew Bible commands that the altar flame must never go out. The sun warriors also seem to have a shofar, a musical horn made from ram's horn that is used to announce religious ceremonies

To know that the original fire bending Masters and old firebending civilizations still exist hidden away from the ruthless fire nation whom I'm sure would kill them if they ever found out that the civilization and the dragons are alive.makes this show even great in mystery The fact that the key to unlocking the secret of firebending was a dance. If you reacall in the episode the headband no one in the firenation know how dance.pretty much meaning the fire nation doesn't want it's citizens learning the true key and form of fire bending but to learn what they are taught. And I like how you learn your bending element from the elemental animals. Air you learn from sky byson Fire you learn from dragons Earth you learn from badger moles Water you learn from the coyfish And I also like the fact that Zuko has a red scar on his face and aang has a blue arrow. But aang was judged by the red dragon and Zuko by the blue dragon And as well as the blue dragon symbolized azula,the evil. And the red was iroh the good Alot of parallels the in this show. Aang: still think we can takem? Zuko:shhhh!! I never said that!!! Lmao Zuko got scared realquick!

I like that the Sun Warriors have Mesoamerican influences to their society. Most of the rest of the Avatar world is inspired by Chinese, Japanese, and some Tibetan culture. Though the Swampbenders were probably meant to be from Louisiana, I think. You have to wonder, is there anything Sozin _didn't_ mess up? His intention was to show to world the greatness of his country, but what he started has hurt the Fire Nation even outside of the war itself. The children in the Fire Nation are being taught a false version of history that ignores their blame in a genocide, the original meaning of Firebending is barely known, and most of the dragons are extinct. Considering Sozin himself had a dragon, that makes his dragon hunting sport even more messed up. Also, Katara is gonna be a massive hater for a bit.

My favorite episode hands down!!! These dragons mirror the dragons from zukos dream they are not roku a dragon because there is a soul tie between the avatar and their animal guide so when roku dies his dragon dies just like when aang will die appa will die as well notice how zuko was afraid to see the masters because he was only concerned about sozin azulon and ozai not thinking about roku or iroh. What I find funny is that iroh lies to even zuko about the dragons telling him his fire bending came from emotion but yet knew that there was also peace in fire bending. Zuko from this point on doesn’t even grunt when he fire bends letting go fully of his anger. I dislike that sokka and katara mocked this ancient cultures customs. Aang smiles as he fire bends mirroring when he fire smiled back in the desserter episode where he burned katara. I really wish that from here on out zuko could do like green orange purple and red fire that would have been so dope. Like his powers were amped by being with the dragons or whatever but that’s just how I would have did things. The ruins remind me less of Egypt and more of the Mayans architecture. Dances def reminds me of fusion And I def think there something special about that golden egg Mid you don’t think this shit was inspired by Indiana Jones you a dumb ass cuz that shit is obvious lol I like that all the original benders were animals more or less except for the moon and ocean even though they hand the physical manifestations as the koi fish they themselves were objects and not animals in the spirit world.

It’s really subtle to notice that by the end, learning that Fire isn’t just a tool, that it’s life and energy, both Aang and Zuko’s Fire is stronger than ever before. I never get tired of seeing Aang and Zuko go through the movements of the Dancing Dragon, especially alongside the dragons. While it's good to understand how dangerous and destructive firebending can be, it's also important to understand that that isn't all there is to it. As the Sun Warrior Chief stated, firebending is not just destruction, it's also life. And as the Avatar, I think Aang understanding that (both sides) is very important because it's about balance.
