This shows the relationship between Azula,Mai and Ty Lee. Obviously her so called friends were bullied into a friend ship long ago. The only reason why Mai and Ty Lee are friends with azula is because they fear her and her father,so she pretty much forced them into friendship when they were younger.

I dunno it could have been genuine at the beginning when they were children. They went to the Fire Nation Girl Prep school. Azula might be a people person and be able to realize potential, but just two girls in the whole Fire Nation were her friends? There had to be something at first with how awkward Azula is socially. They seemed to enjoy some of the journey with Azula. I don't see her flexing her power until after they were friends as kids. TyLee is emotional enough that she outright said didn't want that manipulation anymore at the circus. Mai didn't even care too much or knows if TyLee was dragged in Azula would do something unsettling to get/make her to join in.

King Asa no they were truly friends as a child, they truly had good times Of there own free will but as they grew up like a lot of other friendships they drifted apart the only reason ty Lee joined them was bc she knew azula wouldn’t stop trying to hurt her if she didn’t come & honestly..... Mai truly was never afraid but she probably wanted her family to be safe. & tbh they still were friends even after all that until this episode.... it was just her loyalty to azula was less than her love for zuko

I don't believe that is entirely the case. As children years ago, back when Azula was mischievous for sure but not blatantly malevolent like she became, I think Ty Lee and Mai genuinely considered Azula a friend. However, as Azula grew older and more oppressive under the parenting of Ozai, their friendship de-evolved into a totalitarian relationship.

@@thehavoccompany-a3 Agree with you there. Yeah, I think they just know Azula and what she is like now and tried to deal with it and go along with things. Like when you know a friend has a horrible temper and rage as an adult but you stick around because of your history. But Azula finally took it too far with most likely killing Mai in anger. (Killing, because Mai is not a firebender and I have thought that taking a lightening bolt is different physically if you are a bender)

You should've feared me more!! Azula's always in control and I'm sure she believed she could control others through fear alone, but for the first time, she wasn't in control and she was wrong. And by how she was so quick to anger after what Mai said, you can tell how much this affected her (she got triggered lol). I don't think she ever thought someone could turn on her like this. Her shocked and surprised gasp after Ty Lee chi-blocked her also indicated as much. So much for their so-called friendship.

I think it's still a messy one but still a friendship. Azula ruined it by always pushing her wants and agendas, but I truly believe the three had been true friends at some point. Then Azula took it too far when becoming teenagers. The fact that she believed they were close friends together makes me think there HAD been something before that wasn't based directly on fear.

This shows Zuko is just as smart as sokka helping him in areas where he did not captilize or realize things. Zuko thought about breaking the lever and the war balloon that azula arived on they are a great team together.

The stand off between Mai, Azula, and Ty Lee was so intense lol. I just noticed that dude actually left his girl in prison, lol savage. But yeah, I could tell Mai was already sick of Azula's shit, she was always the one who showed a little resistance to doing what Azula said. Like when she didn't jump into that pit of sludge on the drill episode. Also, she gave Azula some serious side eye earlier this season when Azula ruined her moment with Zuko. Ty Lee's was much more surprising but Azula did bully her quite a bit so she chose a side and Ty Lee never seemed like a "bad guy" to me. Suki is such a boss.

I wanted to jump on this quick! Between Suki scenes, the fight scenes, and the ending!! This episode is one of my all time favorites.

This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. This is the first and only episode where only one type of bending is featured, namely firebending. The other bending arts appear only in the opening sequence. Zuko and Mai's exchange about Mai needing protection was a nod to their past relationship. Normally, when Azula bends blue fire, it cools off to orange fire after a few seconds. However, when she was firebending on the gondola, the fire retained its blue color, even when it burned out. The "Previously on Avatar" section for this episode is the longest of all episodes in seasons two and three. This is the last episode in which Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee are seen together. This is one of the only episodes in which Ty Lee is shown fighting, but is unsuccessful at chi blocking her opponents due to the latter evading her attacks.
