Also, I think this episode showed the start of *SPOILERS* Azula's mental decline. The fact that she mounted such a sudden attack instead of carefully planning it out like she used to shows how angry and unstable she's starting to become--and this definitely started when Mai and Ty Lee betrayed her in Boiling Rock. Most of her attacks are focused on Zuko as well ("I'm about to celebrate becoming an only child") and this links to her feeling like everyone in her life seems to leave her for Zuko's side. Great start to the episode, both plot-, character- and action-wise.

Avatar: The Last Airbender - 3x7 The Runaway Sokka to Toph (Katara eavesdropping) "I never told anyone this before, but honestly, I'm not sure I can remember what my mother looked like. It really seems like my whole life Katara's been the one looking out for me. She's always been the one that's there, and *now*, when I try to remember my mom, Katara's is the only face I can picture." ------ Katara to Sokka Avatar: The Last Airbender - 3x16 The Southern Raiders "Then you didn´t love her the way I did" That line was really a deep one. ViejoBelgrano yeah, after hearing him say that, it might be somewhere in the back of her mind.... subconsciously she may feel that his hazy memory is a reflection of his love.... she probably can't imagine forgetting her mom's face with such a traumatic event seared into her memory
@LC.OneSketch
@LC.OneSketch 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally agreed. Katara didn´t mean it (specially if you think that Sokka´s speech was the reason for Toph and Katara reconciliation) but subconsciouly she said something that she heard before because she wanted a excuse to be right about the revenge (and probably frustrated that her brother wasn´t on her side). And as you say, it is unfair because the main reason she remembers her so clearly is because of a traumatic experience. Their mother died for her.

I swear some of the best Katara lines are from this Book: Her threat to Zuko in the “Western Air Temple” episode: “I will make sure your destiny ends right then and there, permanently” and in this: “it’s not just hard, it’s impossible.” Love the field trips with Zuko. They’re a great way for him to truly make amends and earn his place in their friendship circle because he did hunt them down for the longest time, so it only makes sense that he had to earn their trust one at a time. The boys just happened to easily warm up to him and let bygones be bygones more quickly than Katara. Solid Zutara shipper here, though Kataang has grown on me over the years. That little forgiveness hug was heartwarming.

For me, Zutara looks fantastic together, of course, and their histories mirror each other - losing their mothers to the Fire Nation etc - but for me, that's *why* they don't work as a couple. They're both too intense, grew up too young too soon. Katara needs Aang's youth and playfulness to balance her out. I think it's summed up best right at the beginning of the show, when they're penguin-sledding. "I haven't done this since I was a kid!" "You *are* a kid!" She needs that reminder. Her and Zuko can connect in a unique way over their past, but I think that similarity would gradually destroy them instead. I prefer them being snarky best friends sitting on the sidelines and sniping at people.

Zuko never implied that Aang has to "forgive" what the Fire Lord does. I think you guys kind of confused what they said. Zuko: "Violence wasn't the answer" Aang: "It never is." Zuko: "Then what are you going to do when you face my father?" The dilemma there is the fact has to go against his natural training of pacifism and all that he's learned in order to deal with someone as ruthless as the Fire Lord.
@brianhalligan9268
@brianhalligan9268 3 жыл бұрын
he also knew (at the time) that there wasn't a scenario where his dad could be stopped without violence (read murder). Aang obviously found a way in the end but at this point Zuko was right to assume that the only way his father could be stopped was with lethal force.

12:14 Team Avatar are easily some of the strongest benders in their respective fields and I think it has a lot to do with all the struggles they've been put in where they had to innovate and think differently; also they've actually fought against multiple people/armies that tested and improved their abilities which is wildly different from just practicing bending techniques in the safety of your home.

Ruben Avalos Furthermore there is very cleary an expectation held for the fire nation royal family to be amongst the strongest benders that resulted in both him and Azula being heavily trained in bending and martial arts since early childhood by the nations greatest masters. Also all throughout the series we have seen zuko traveling the world, fighting, and struggling like the rest of the team. He has progressively gotten stronger and mastering the sun style has been enough of a boost for him to match Azula whp actually is a prodigy and recieved the same training. On the topic of prodigys, Toph is the greatest bending talent in the show, Aang is only relearning the elements, and Katara was the most talented of her masters students.

"comment war incoming" lol... the REAL Hundred Year War of Avatar was Kataang vs. Zutara... BUT shipping aside: I appreciate how hardcore and intense this episode gets, because if you look at Katara from a generalized perspective, she's the kind and caring one of the group, who gives people the benefit of the doubt and forgives them for their mistakes. They could have easily made the episode about her getting closure about her mother's murder a lot more Disney-esque and lowkey, having her follow Aang's idealistic advice of peacefully resolving it and forgiving him. But Katara is not so gentle and zen; she is an incredibly emotional person and reacts so strongly to betrayals of trust (seen with both Jet and Zuko), there was no way she would be able to let it go so easily. And when you think about how many times she's referenced her mother's death and the pain it caused her throughout the entire show, this was something that's been building up a LONG time; and for so long she's been acting as the group's caretaker, keeping them all level-headed and doing her best to help them resolve their emotional conflicts-- it was HIGH TIME that somebody cared to do the same for her. And I think Zuko was absolutely the perfect person to be her support in this journey. Of all people, he understands internal conflict and how much it tears you apart to not have closure, and he understands that it's something that Katara has to do for herself by herself. He sort of assumes the role that Iroh had for him, letting her make the decisions and not pushing her to act vengefully, nor to back off when she turns violent, only following her and backing her up if she needed it. He knew Aang was right about what Katara needed, he knew from the beginning, but he also knew that she had to do it herself and come to her own conclusion. I feel like this is the same kind of turning point for Katara's character arc that Day of Black Sun was for Zuko's arc: all the turbulence and emotions building over time, finally confronting the problem, and resolving that they will be the better person... and now the storms can finally settle and they can find inner peace. (Needless to say this is one of my favorite episodes of the season!)

We see the darkness that consumed such a warm hearted and optimistic character, and although she matured by not taking his life, it's also realistic and relatable for her to have not forgiven him, showing that although she didn't let darkness completey consume her, it will still influence her for the rest of her life.

I have a theory: Yon Rha "not taking prisoners" is evil, but not exactly unprecedented. Remember the last time they took a Waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe prisoner? It was Hama, a Waterbender who escaped through Bloodbending. The Fire Nation probably didn't want to take any more chances.

People brushing off Katara’s trauma, not only her mother gave her own life to save her, but can you imagine how they found her when they came back? Kid Katara saw her mom’s corpse, did he slice her throat? Burnt her to death? So many possibilities.. that must be so traumatizing. And that’s not even all the traumas and responsibilities she had to face.

Their age 112 - Aang and Bumi 17 - Mai 16 - Zuko and Yue 15 - Sokka and Suki 14 - Katara, Azula, Ty Lee 12 - Toph The creators confirmed that. It's their age in the beginning and up to the end of the series. Their journey begun at Winter and ended at the end of Summer, which didn't include Fall. So their story spun for 9 months. They didn't age. The Fire Lord's Coronation in the end happened in Fall. After that, there's a festival in Ba Sing Se. That' s the last part when they were in Jasmine Dragon. They were waiting for the Earth King's Festival.

The thing that disturbed me to most in this episode is that Katara most likely *saw* her dead mother, right there inside their house. The captain killed her on the spot and Katara and her dad arrived back in a matter of minutes. There is no way he would have had time to move her since he was already gone when they arrived or even if he had the time he wouldn't have any reason to. She was *there* and Katara saw her. Sokka never did, he was off trying to fight the fire nation soldiers. It's so messed up to think that this little girl not only had to live with the absence of her mother, she had to see her laying there and she had to deal with it because, like Sokka said, everyone else fell apart. Goddamit, this show is dark as hell

Katara is absolutely right when she says its impossible to forgive someone for killing someone you love. You might be able to accept and move on with your life but you'd never be able to forgive the person who killed someone you love. Using bloodbending on the southern raider leader on the ship was the one time after saving Aang & Sokka from Hama that katara broke her rule that she'd never use bloodbending again. It was purely through anger that she used it.

It’s easy to say that the lesson is that: “violence is never the answer. Forgiveness is”. And that’s a lesson, but it wasn’t the point of this episode. What this episode accomplished is show us the very real struggle between revenge and forgiveness. Katara KNOWS that violence and revenge is wrong, and yet she sees it as an act of justice. And maybe it is. But we cannot deny the reality that it is also equally violent. And when Aang says that it’s easy to do nothing, it’s harder to forgive, it portrays the ideal path to enlightenment. We all know that forgiveness is important. But we are shown the struggle of it. We are shown what we are willing to sacrifice for our loved ones. We are shown that when it comes down to it, we are willing to call violence “justice”, even if it means taking someone’s life. Even if it means someone else is going to lose a loved one. I’m not here to say that one was right or the other. At the end of it all, forgiveness, and moving forward is the right thing to do. But there’s no formula to how these things are. It’s so easy for us to preach violence as justice when it doesn’t affect us directly. And it’s so easy for someone to say forgiveness is the right thing to do when it’s not them experiencing grief. What we need to take from this episode is to understand the very really battle between knowing what is right, and being able to choose to do it. It’s so easy for us to say that someone is bad. But we never talk about how someone can be redeemed. This show has many redemption stories, and it talks about all this not to give a definitive answer, but to provide us the perspective of people in very really situations. And I think that’s what’s so awesome about this show. Don’t get me wrong, I will always choose to do the right thing, but there should be no shame when one feels certain things towards other people. What matters is character. Faced with the moment of decision, who you are determines what choice you will make.

I love watching reactions of Katara bloodbending in this episode, because it just shows the darkness and anger she has inside her.

I like that Zuko was sad when he thought his sister was going to die, but also didn't make any attempt to save her. I feel like in other shows he'd have yelled, "Wait!! We can't let her die!!". In this, he regretted it because she's his sister and he's not a bad person, but knew he had to let her die because she's so dangerous and an enemy.

Now that this episode is up, I can finally talk about this. Here's a little theory I thought of and I wanna hear you and others thoughts on it. After watching The Southern Raiders one day, I started thinking, "Why did Yon Rha kill Kya while in the past, all other water benders were taken away? It's obvious he was following orders given to him by the Fire Nation, but why receive these orders instead of taking her away? And there was only one reason why...Hama. Remember, Hama was the last of the water benders captured by the Fire Nation before the Southern Raiders. And as we all know, while in prison, Hama invented Blood Bending and used it to escape. So, after her escape, the Fire Nation become aware of how powerful and how dangerous water benders can truly be. And with the discovery of one water bender left in the Southern Water Tribe, the Fire Nation were not willing to take the chance of creating another Hama, they decide to order Yon Rha to kill the Last Waterbender. So if Hama did not create Blood Bending to escape her prison, there wouldn't have been a reason for the Fire Nation to raid the Southern Water Tribe and kill the last water bender. She may have just been sent to prison as well. So Hama is the reason Kya had to sacrifice herself to save Katara. So it makes the scene of Katara telling Hama that she and Sokka lost their mother in a raid well...dark. And to think, Katara uses the same technique on the man she thought killed her mother. It's actually kind of twisted. Thoughts?

Just realized that Katara named the only daughter she had after her mother. Never caught that

i love Rana's reaction for Aang's wise words. she appreciates Aang when a lot of people don't for his pacifism and instead are annoyed by it, wanting to see action. but his words here were really wise and strong. i love Aang too!

One important thing to note is how different Zuko’s fighting styles is now since he met the Dragons and joined Aang. He could never deflect Azula before.

I laughed so hard when they actually thought that Toph will be left out in the tunnel scene.

Yeah, the creators confirmed that Kya was killed on the spot. But it’s so terrifying to know where Katara’s mind was that she would resort to using bloodbending. A technique that scared her so bad.
