My favorite shot of this episode is seeing Zuko and Iroh talking through the bars yet the bars make it seem as Zuko is the one in a prison. Iroh is never shown through the bars and is sitting in sunlight to show his freedom and mindstate while Zuko is always shown with the bars infront of him and almost entrapped in darkness to represent how caged he feels now. Amazing shot that shows how these characters feel now.

Roku and Sozin are fighting each other, Roku gets beaten by a force of nature, Sozin comes to the rescue, but let's him fall at the end. Roku and Sozin both died with regret. Ironically, Roku felt he should've been more decisive, killing Sozin when he had the chance. Conversely, Sozin talks about his "vision for a brighter future" but at the start of the episode says "as I feel my own life dimming, I can't help but think of a time when everything was so much brighter. I remember my friend." He regrets not helping Roku as he wasted the remainder of his life searching for Aang in vain. Azula assumed the weathered firelord died peacefully in his sleep, when that very much was not the case.

@UnevenRanger3 жыл бұрын
@@Mrryn I'm confused. I didnt deny that Sozin was the one who ordered the attack on the Air Nomads and committed genocide against them out of fear of the next avatar. The fact that he committed that act doesn't mean that he couldn't have a change of heart in his elder years. To quote: "As I feel my own life dimming, I cant help but think of a time when everything was so much brighter, I think of my friend." Does that sound like a guy who (considering as far as we know he spent his ENTIRE life searching for Aang) is searching for him to try and kill him? Maybe that is how it started out but I choose to believe that as he grew older, he realised that the 'greatness' of the fire nation he was trying to spread to the other nations wasn't worth him having betrayed his old friend, and continued his search in the hopes of finding him and apologising to him in his next life. It's much more in keeping with the message that Avatar told of there being both good and bad in all people.

Zukos dual swords actually foreshadowed his double heritage/destiny, I recommend rewatching the scene in "Zuko Alone" where he talks about them. Yes, Rokus earth master is the guy from the intro and a prototype for Toph, who was supposed to be a guy, before Aaron Ehasz, the genius behind the show, changed that. You can look up the sources on the wiki.
@MetallicaRules7 жыл бұрын
While Aaron Ehasz was a fantastic writer and contributed a lot, he's certainly not the "genius" of the show. Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of Avatar, can be considered the "geniuses," but even then, it was a whole team effort.
@imaaduddin77157 жыл бұрын
MetallicaRules I agree with you it was a team effort but Ehasz was definitely the genius behind it and was the most talented writer all of the best and top episodes from the show are written by him and ATLA would definitely not be what it is today without Ehasz and with just mike and Bryan doing everything like just look at LOK that's how isn't close to ATLA and one of the reasons why is cause Ehasz wasn't one of the writers, Ehasz brought so much more to the show mike and Bryan originally just wanted Katara to be the only female in the show, you know much that would've sucked Ehasz was the one to make Toph a female and Azula a female both phenomenal characters and mike and Bryan wanted ATLA to originally be some type of sci fi setting but Ehasz was the one to make it a more eastern ancient setting like how it is and like I said I agree that it was a team effort but Ehasz was the master behind this show and it wouldn't be what it is without him
@MetallicaRules7 жыл бұрын
+imaad udder While Aaron was certainly fantastic, I don't think he was the best. I found both Michael and his wife Elizabeth just as good if not better than him. Aaron has The Storm and Crossroads of Destiny, Michael has The Waterbending Master, 3 of the 4 episodes of the finale, and The Blind Bandit, and Elizabeth has Zuko Alone, The Avatar and the Firelord, and The Southern Raiders (which is easily one of the greatest episodes of any TV show that I have ever seen). I'm pretty sure the choice to not make it sci-fi was by the creators while it was still in early development, unless you can link me a source that tells me otherwise. And while TLOK isn't as good as TLA, I still find it an amazing show in its own right. While the characters and story is better in TLA, TLOK is a much more adult and smarter show with its themes and imagery.
@maxmustermann90587 жыл бұрын
As head writer and co-producer Ehasz was involved with all episodes. I am still baffled how some people can think of LOK as smart or mature, it is just more ambitious. Edit: You are all right about TLAB being a group effort, I really should have clarified that.
@lalalalisa417 жыл бұрын
+imaad uddin While I can agree Aaron and his wife were fantastic writers, I can't ignore that it wasn't just him and his wife that made ATLA what it is. In the end, it was a collaboration and team effort that made ATLA what it is *and* it was Mike and Bryan that brought forth the idea to even start creating this wonderful world. I can respect if you think they aren't as great as the Ehaszs, but without them, we wouldn't even have Avatar to begin with. As for LOK, I personally enjoyed it and thought it was amazing in its own right (especially given how horribly it was treated by Nickelodeon). I can respect if others don't feel the same though.

Firebending is all about energy. In the very first episode of Book 1, Iroh explains it as thus: "The breath creates energy in the body. This energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire." From this we can conclude that firebenders actually bend pure energy, not specifically fire. So it stands to reason that they could manipulate the energy around them, including draining it. This is also why they are able to create and channel lightning - because they can control the energy flow within their own bodies.
@ObligedUniform7 жыл бұрын
Well for those Firebenders that are wise or dedicated enough to see that. Ozai and many of the Firebenders we have seen up to this point are very much gun ho 'burn everything' like Zhao was. Thus theres not many at the present time that see Firebending in that way.
@imaaduddin77157 жыл бұрын
Raiguard yes I agree they use the energy and the heat in their body to produce fire they are the only benders that don't their element present to bend like earth benders water benders and Airbenders do fire benders produce fire on their own and if there is a fire close to them well that's better for them cause they have more to bend

Yeah, the earthbender in the intro is Roku's master, Sud. So now, we basically know everyone in the intro. Water: Pakku, Earth: Sud, Fire: Azula, and Air: Probably Aang since it's never been confirmed that it was Aang (I like to think so though!!). This was such a great backstory episode! Most especially because we finally got to see what Roku meant by Aang inheriting his mistakes and problems and how he could've prevented the war. I also loved this episode for Roku's journey in becoming a fully-realized Avatar as well! It's one of my favorite things to see every time, because even though it was a very condensed showing of his journey, I loved how it felt like a full journey and by the end when he started bending all 4 elements, all I could think was "This is what the Avatar is supposed to be like. Someone whose patient, wise, and powerful". This episode definitely showed that, in my opinion :D Such a great twist there with Zuko, huh? I was completely mind-blown when I first heard it. This is one of my favorite episodes. It's right up there with The Guru and Zuko Alone. It's kind of a filler episode, but it tells such a great story, the same story, from different perspectives. It's very rare when it's done right, and when it is done right, it's just as good as this episode. I especially love the ending battle between Roku and the volcano, and how Sozin comes in at the last minute, and makes it a last five minutes. Speaking of Sozin, I like how they developed his relationship with Roku, from best friends to bitter rivals, which makes it very sad to see all that they have gone through, just to see Sozin leave Roku for dead. Even though Sozin killed off every non-frozen airbender, and sent the world into chaos, he's far worse when you consider he was a dick to his friend. I also like the message at the end about morality and friendship, and how Zuko is still troubled with how he should live his life. My only problems are the voice acting with post-fully-realized-Avatar Roku, who sounds like if the voice actor for Superman on HISHE had the flu, and the design of Min. There's nothing bad about her design, but she looks older than I think the creators intended. Also, her voice (which is Grey DeLisle; subtle) sounds a little weird, though I can't put my finger on it. I can overlook those nitpicks, and enjoy one of my favorite Avatar episodes.

Toph: "Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime?" And then years later she meets Avatar Korra, literally the first sentence coming from her is "nice to see you again, twinkle toes".

One of the best episodes of the series. I've always compared this episode to the Season 1 episode "The Storm" (coincidentally, The Storm was written by Aaron Ehasz, while his wife, Elizabeth Welch Ehasz, wrote The Avatar and The Firelord). We see even more parallels between Aang and Zuko, and unlike in The Storm, where we learn Aang and Zuko's backstory and history, it is now Aang and Zuko learning about the history of the war. And that twist, holy hell that twist.
@lindseysquire84174 жыл бұрын
Still disappointed that Aang never made any "I'm your great-grandpa, you HAVE to listen to me" jokes.

Roku's earthbending teacher was Toph's orginal design before they changed it to her current form and reused it for him

Zuko and Aang aren't that different if you think about it. This episode helps people seeing that

This is always was the episode that got me emotional the most and gave me chills the most. I love Roku's character so much, and seeing you guys react to it on such a beautiful and wonderful way was really, really amazing! Dream came true here. That reveal about Zuko's grandfather's , the scene was so beautifully made , perfect! It's very rare when you see such beautiful writing, and directing and acting. This will certainly be one of my favorite reactions of Blind Wave.

I just realized that before Sozin and Roku destroyed it, the throne room of the Fire Lord's palace was smaller, less imposing, and allowed easier access to the Fire Lord with stairs leading right to the throne. However after it was rebuilt and the war had started, Sozin rebuilt the throne room so that the Fire Lord is distanced from all others and was more imposing.

the dragon didn't save Roku because he had already that toxic gas in his lungs so he was gonna die anyway. So instead the dragon was by his side when he died 😭 beautiful!

One of my favorite episodes of ALTA of all time. It's so emotionally potent, and teaches so many lessons, especially about the nuance and complexity of life. Plus the almost overbearing tragedy of it... breaks my heart every time, the regret, the loss of a friend, The way Roku still wears that hair ornament even as a spirit, Roku and his dragon.... masterful episode. Always gets my tears
@chandlertrotter15607 жыл бұрын
This episode is a amazingly told story of friendship, destiny, tragedy, betrayal, and how one's choices can have such a profound impact on their life. It really builds on the already established parallels between Aang and Zuko by using the history of those who came before them and the message at the end is beautiful one. Also it's been confirmed by the creators that Iroh not speaking to Zuko was already in the works before Mako died, but it is understable to think that if you are unfamiliar with the behind the scene information.
@thenerdytiger93064 жыл бұрын
on the Iroh voice change front. I feel that waiting until this episode was a really good writing choice since if you consider everything Iroh must be going through being imprisoned with barely any food or water it makes the voice change feel more natural for the character.

If you guys check out Legend of Korra (its a total different feel but still amazing) they delve into the ancestry, bending, nonbending history a lot more. its awesome. I tried to keep this vague so hopefully it isn't too spoilery. Please check out Legend of Korra after this. :)
@Maiko1347 жыл бұрын
This is also one of my favorite episodes. And if you want more on Kyoshi, there is an unofficial episode that takes place between the end of the second season and before the beginning of the third. And the comics, which you have to read after you finish the series, give a lot more information too.

The only problem I have with the avatar origin story is in this series they say they learned the bending from the moon, dragons, air bison, and those mole things. In the LoK (sorry if this is next line is considered a spoiler) the people are shown learning it from those turtle things. Unless their legends changed and now they believe they learned it from the animals/moon. Idk, they never really explain it in Korra.
@canvas_1257 жыл бұрын
Maiko134 A lot of people keep talking about that it makes me want to watch it despite others saying how weak Legend of Korra is. I'm going to give it a shot. :)
@25fastisthebest257 жыл бұрын
ya that problem is with LOK series which inherited this world yet for some reason decided to change its history to fit its own story so the problem you should have is with the legend of Korra

favorite standalone (non-multi-part) episode in the show. the moment when Roku confronts Sozin is my favorite avatar unleashed moment in the show. seeing him (and Kyoshi in S2) as fully realized adult avatars shows you just how awesome and terrifying the Avatar can be.

The foreshadowing in this episode is amazing! The training sequence with Roku & Sozin foreshadowed Roku's death, Sozin saved Roku from falling due to the tree root, but then decided to let him fall anyway. Just like how he later decided to save Roku from the volcano, but decided to let him die anyway. Both times Roku is endangered by something other than Sozin, and Sozin's first instinct is to help him, until he changes his mind.

The Earth Bender in theme is Sud- he was the original concept for Aang's Earth Bending Master until the writers became too amused by the idea of a little girl wrecking everyone so they created Toph.

Sud (Roku's earth bending teacher) is in the opening because he was planned to be Aang's earth bending teacher, but later it was changed when they designed Toph, they just never changed the intro to reflect this.
