What I really love about this episode and the writing here is that writers waste no time. Aang spends the first half of this season finding an earthbending teacher. And then as soon as he starts to physically learn earthbending, in the next episode they introduce the plot of the solar eclipse and Appa being kidnapped. The reason Wan-Chi Tong turns into a dragon at the end is because in western myth owls are seen as symbols of wisdom but in the east, they’re unlucky. Dragons are symbolic of wisdom in the east. So the writers thought they would get the best of both worlds by having the knowledge spirit turn into a dragon at the end. Ruff you are right. In the comics, we meet a group of people who are not airbenders but ascribe to airbender philosophies. Some of them even get the arrow tattoos. And I don't know if you caught it but the firebender who found the library was Zhao. It's where he learned the location of the moon and ocean spirits.

Toph holding up an ENTIRE BUILDING BY HERSELF for an extended period of time is honestly one of the most impressive feats of bending that we see in this show. There are other things later that people often credit as her most powerful earthbending moments, but this has to top it for me. It really shows that she’s genuinely a full earthbending master already

My new nickname in my family has become wheels since I started using my wheelchair, humor helps to make others more comfortable about it and helps me have an outlet to make jokes and lighten the mood around my disabilities. That’s one of the reasons why Toph is such a well written disabled character, that’s totally something people in her situation do, and her using earth bending to adapt and change the way she lives her life isn’t all that far off from how real people use various different methods, meds and equipment to make their lives easier!

With bending, the 4 elements are essentially, like, the base forms. Under each element, there are “sub-elements” like Lightning. Sand and Ice aren’t really considering sub-elements. Ice is just water at a different temperature and every water bender can do it. It’s essentially the same with sand but since most earthbenders don’t bend sand on the regular, it’s not something that most can just do easily. Sand is especially difficult for Toph since she can’t feel where everything is as well. Every element has sub-elements/skills. What makes it a sub-element is that not everyone who can bend the main element can do the sub-element/skill. It’s something either you can or can’t do. As of this episode, these are the sub elements y’all have seen so far: Healing - sub skill of water Lighting - sub element of fire Spirit projection - sub skill of air Seismic sense - sub skill of earth Lava - sub element of earth (you see Avatar Kiyoshi do it on that Kiyoshi island episode)

@4:00 for what it is worth, ice actually takes a while to melt, for the same reason that it takes a good while to boil. It takes a good amount of energy to get it to change phase, so large blocks of ice can last a while and a thick walled cup will probably also last the day, especially if they are all together like that keeping their local temp colder then the outside and surrounding air.

It kinda would be a more dead giveaway in the modern time for them, but technically before Aang froze himself plenty of airbenders in general had the arrow tattoo. It was usually a way to sorta mark someone that had pretty well mastered air bending. So just having them wouldn't necessarily mean you're the Avatar as they were more of an Air Nomad thing than purely an Avatar thing, but after the 100 year freeze and stuff it definitely is a bit more of a giveaway for Aang as the Avatar.

So to clarify, there are just four different types of benders: water, earth, fire, and air. Any waterbender can bend any water, any earthbender can bend any earth, etc. The quantity and precise movement of the element being bended depends on personal power/skill. Toph and Aang are both earthbenders, they could theoretically bend sand just as well as they can bend big rocks, it's all considered earth. And the sandbenders themselves could bend the big rocks that Toph bends, if they wanted to. It's just a different skill set. Moving a whole bunch of tiny grains of earth requires an earthbender to move a little differently from how they would move one huge chunk of earth. Water: liquid water, ice, snow, clouds, perfume, swamp plants with a high water concentration Earth: rocks, sand, dirt, mud Fire: fire, lightning Air: air, wind

An air nomad gets its arrow tattoos when they have mastered the airbender. Aang mastered it in his 11 year. And he invented his own air sphere that the used to ride on. For a normal air bender it would take years of mastering air. Its like in bleach how Bankai takes 10 years to master but Ichigo mastered it or received bankai in just 2 and half days.

The way I see it this is how bending works in this universe. The fire benders not only bend the fire itself but also have the ability to manipulate (hot)heat; so anything hot they can bend like lightning and hot gases etc if they are skillful enough. Water benders are similar, they can bend the water (and anything that contains water) but also manipulate (cool) heat hence why they can change the state of water to ice and steam. I won't go into earth and air since that is spoiler territory.
