Zuko and Iroh's relationship especially as displayed during the flashback scene's in this episode were some of my favorite things they did here! Zuko comforting Iroh with a story about Lu Ten as leaves from the vine plays in the background, probably my favorite scene in this whole adaptation. And that exchange: "I don't need a babysitter." "How about a friend?" and "everything I need, is on this ship" like that's genuinely great stuff!

Greg Baldwin and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee hang out a lot and are great friends. (Both Irohs) Greg Baldwin's most frequently asked request from fans is to sing Leaves from the Vine which he always refuses. He always explains that the song belongs to Mako and only to Mako. That is why he refuses to sing the song for anyone even after taking up the mantle of voicing Uncle Iroh. The fact that Paul also does not sing the song in the first season is also a fitting tribute to Mako as well and makes sense since Iroh is unable to say or speak due to his grief from losing his son. With Season 2 and 3 confirmed by Netflix, it is likely that we will get the live action Iroh Tales of Ba Sing Se episode but he will not actually sing Leaves from the Vine. If it is added in season 2 we are definitely going to need to prepare for more tear-bending.

28:02 There's a short flash back in the original where Iroh is writing a letter to Ozai, or maybe to Zuko or his son. He makes a remark about how beautiful Ba Sing Se is, and he finishes the letter with a joke kinda like "I hope you get to see this city one day, if we don't burn it all first lol."

EXACTLY!!! THANK YOU for saying that!! While i Know Bumi was Supposed to be funny, crazy, and ofcourse "Aang's childhood friend", the L.A made him more Realistic in the way that, most people who survives war and sees their friends and Brothers die, thats how they Would end up! Or rather, maybe not during a war that lasted 2-7yrs but, for a man like him that has Fought for a war for 100 YEARS (come to think of it, he Must have been close to death Thousands of times!), its not weird he got saltier and saltier... Especially towards a friend he thought would be his best friend forever, and finds out "he must have died with his people.", Finds out not ONLY is he supposed to save the Entire world, but, for all he knows Aang could have been messing around (WHICH HE DID, kinda in the Animated) INSTEAD of taking his responsibility serious, after finding out he Survived Somehow, still being the same age - by the looks - as he was in the past, ulike himself!.. Idk, i just think, the design Could be better but, i Absolutely loved and think they did a good job with the character... But thats just my own opinion..

I’ve never thought about it like that, but you’re right. If Iroh acted exactly like the animated Iroh it wouldn’t fit the show. He would be TOO jovial to make it work. The audience would know right away that he was a good guy and would roll their eyes whenever something happens. It works in the animated show because goofier things can happen and we can let it go.

How is he a good guy when he burnt people alive for the crime of defending their home from an army hell bent on world domination. The fire nation are fascists who murdered all of aangs people. They had no just cause for their war, it wasn’t revenge, they just want to bring order through fear and pain, iroh was a general in fascist army. And there’s a supremacy element where the fire nation believes they’re better than the others. He might be a nice uncle but I don’t get why everyone loves him.

They made Bumi mad at Aang for not being there in this version, but in this version they also made Aang getting trapped in ice something that happened when he went for a walk to clear his head, instead of him running away intentionally. So it's not even his fault but it's being treated as if it's even more his fault than it was in the old version. Both changes clash with each other so harshly, I don't understand why they made them both.

I get what they're saying about needing to separate the two versions and judge this one on it's own merits but even doing that, the writing is not great in this show for the most part. There is some good to even great stuff in this like the Lu ten funeral scene or the guard calling out Iroh for his actions as a Fire Nation general but a lot of this show is tell and not show. Sarcastic Chorus has a great (though long) breakdown of the season and hits upon a lot of the issues I had with it myself. Tons of expositioney dialogue, some flat acting (dear god gran-gran's intro speech), character "growth" even though they didn't really do anything to grow, Katara kinda got shafted as a pretty main character. There's more but I'd have to sit and parse out my thoughts better about it. That said it's not a bad show at all but I think even if I had no prior knowledge of ATLA I would still have most of the same problems with it. Overall, some good stuff sprinkled in but I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10, not bad but a perfectly average show.

So glad to see you guys have been enjoying this show so much. The Iroh scenes were the highlights of this episode. I think the guy that plays him must have felt a lot of pressure in playing this character. I mean to say, Iroh is for most of the fandom the most beloved character. At the same time for most fans Mako's voice will always be Iroh. Looking at those two things this new actor is doing an incredible job in portraying this iconic character. I've got a lot of respect for him. I agree with you guys that on some of the fans responses to this new show. Some fans have never even given this show a fair chance, some even were horrible to some of the child actors, something I will never understood. Like calling some kids "too chubby for the role" I don't get why people should say that, but I guess that is why social media is a toxic place. I can only hope the child actors of this show just don't look too much on social media and read the negativity. You can clearly see that everyone who works on the show is doing the best they can and that they are very passionate about the original show and the story as well.

While I don’t like Bumi’s cynicism bc it doesn’t feel like bumi to me, I agree that this episode really captured the emotion well. Making a point to show the war as not black and white, that there are fire nation citizens against this beyond Iroh, and showing a darker side of Iroh in his responses to acknowledge that he did terrible things as the dragon of the west. That is an amazing touch.

So for a huge ATLA fan that grew up watching it on cable, watching it a few dozen times, and hold it in my heart as a top fave series, I only have one real gripe about the live action series. And that is how much they changed Bumi's personality. I can accept everything else and enjoy it, but his personality change was a huge miss for me. I've accepted it though since as an artistic choice. I am happy they showed some old Bumi in the end.

Did you notice that Oma and Shu are two women in the show? It is an interesting change that the tv series made to make the show more inclusive.

Secret Tunnel is such a memorable and oft referenced thing they had to include it in some way, but they couldn't exactly copy it because, in live action, the ages (both generally and relatively to eachother) of Aang and Katara make romance, for the moment at least, kinda creepy. Making it familial love with Katara and Sokka seems like a fair alternative.

They didn't have to include it at all because it's from S2. It's here for no reason and doesn't really do anything that we didn't already know for Sokka and Katara's relationship. Also this is part of the larger problem of not even bothering to develop Aang and Katara's relationship at all.

@@seventycross0yt175 I never understand this, as Bumi himself says, Aang may be 112 years old, but he hasn’t lived for 112 years. If he were chilling somewhere and aging mentally for 100 years then yeah that’s grounds for calling it creepy, but for him the Airbender genocide was last week. He has not aged for 112 years both physically or mentally

@@phoebusapollo8365 Exactly lol imagine if someone time traveled past their birth. Someone could be born in 1920, travel in 1930 when they are 10 years old to 2000 and they were technically born 80 years ago but they're not 80 years old they are still only 10 years old. Idk why people keep bringing up Aang's age saying it'd be weird when it isn't

Eh, think it's just kind of tacked on. Not really good representation if they're dead and will never be mentioned again. Like if they retconned that some background characters in Star Wars are actually gay. Like ok? That just feels tacked on without any real purpose or for a checkmark. Korrasami and some gay men in the Yangchen novels are far better. The original Oma and Shu story is pretty similar to Romeo and Juliette, the most famous of star-crossed lovers.

@@andrewli6606 i mean knowing shakespeare i wouldn't be surprised if Romeo and Juliet was an intended queer allegory anyways. This adds to the idea of gay people just existing, it not being anything else than regular since its not really highlighted other than the art and them both having feminine pronouns. Dont only make queer rep when its plot relevant or with MC, make characters queer anytime because thats normalization

@@andrewli6606 disagree. Them being from towns going to war is cool. But now there is more layers to them. A forbidden love that isn't accepted by the ppl around them. They having to sneak around. It works way better.
