I don't think any adaptation is safe from the trappings of the word. It's almost too general a word for the vastly different attitudes and expectations people bring with them to the sofa or movie theatre. To some people, adaptation means full remake: no wiggle room, and anything less than shot-for-shot will always disappoint them. To some, they're fine with new material, but it HAS TO be in 100% accordance to the original's lore, to the point where it seems like what they really want is just a B-sides and "What if's?" to the original story, even though its suppossed to be a re-telling. (Think Lion King: The Pre-Sequel) Other's treat adaptations like a chance to take apart a cool Lego set and build something new with the same pieces. They like the Lego pieces individually, and would still enjoy a new creation as long as their favorite pieces are used somewhat the same way. Others still have no problem enjoying the equivalent to your drunk uncle retelling what happened at the Christmas party in your presence. You were there, and yeah you can tell he's getting some stuff wrong and embellishing, but he's funny and tells a good story so what the heck, all's fine in the end. The creator of Watchmen hated the Watchmen movie. It was a good movie! But to him, and some, adaptations are herecy by nature, because they value the original like sacred texts. These "groups" just form naturally, it seems. I think it's best to realize the nature of these attempts simply can't please all of the old fans, in any medium. If you happen to catch an adaptation that is best suited to please your "group", and you enjoy it, then I think that's all that matters. Objective reviews and rankings just aren't the most useful metric in grading projects like this: it all comes down to personal connections. The most successful ones just so happen to have enough stuff to appeal to the masses and make money.
@arthurwatson25559 ай бұрын
That's a pretty good assessment of things, I especially like your comparisons to a Lego set and a drunk uncle, and just the facts that some people will look at it one way, some will do another, some will be okay with it and some won't, without leaning much towards either side
@Jehphg9 ай бұрын
I think it's important to separate an adaptation from something inspired by, which would be your third option. Imho if the creators are upfront about something not being an adaptation and just inspired by some material I'll always try to judge it on its own merits. That's not the case for this though, this is adapting the same story, exploring it with the differences in medium and hindsight knowledge in mind. Honestly when we take that into consideration it's a flawed product, but really good nonetheless. Personally if I wanted a bit by bit retelling I'd rather just consume the original material anyway.
@kalecccxi3339 ай бұрын
That's a lot of words for "just mindlessly enjoy things, don't criticize anything"
@aryanullal28777 ай бұрын
Sure, but that doesn't mean it deserves to be free from critique. Whatever direction they were going with adaptation we can weigh out why things were made this way, and if the changes that were made are acceptable and allow the story to flesh out better than if it was just a 1 to 1 recreation. I understand the distinctions you make between not being able to please all fans but that true of any remake or even sequels. Yet we are still able to aptly critique them without thinking it to be a useless exercise. I think you are ignoring we can have nuance between a 1 to 1 recreation and a dissection of the original piece. Why, because a 1 to 1 recreation may not work in a live action setting with half the episodes, and dissection might pull apart to many workings that undermines some of the themes or things it was aiming at. Sure people are going to have different wants for what the adaptation, but not all arguments are created equal, and I think some people's argument for a type of adaptation can be easily argued against than others.

That bar scene reminds me how aside from "The Great Divide" and "The Waterbending Scroll" this adaptation also skips over "Imprisoned" and "The Fortune Teller" episodes. Which honestly, if there are any Book One episodes you want to "cut out" then those would probably be the best ones. Though I wish they'd kept "The Deserter" episode but I guess the story they're trying to tell with this season didn't allow it to fit.
@sealink1294 ай бұрын
Something that I think could be argued about the Great Divide episode, is that the message wasn’t necessarily bad, just communicated poorly. The message (at least how I interpret it), isn’t that lying is ok, but that past conflicts become an issue when it can potentially lead to your own doom because you’re more focused on that conflict than the current one. The two tribes were so focused on showing up the other, that they refused to find a way to cooperate to save their own lives. You could argue that we see this same thing later in the show (the conflict between Toph and Katara, the Gaang not wanting to accept Zuko in the Western Air Temple because of his previous actions, etc)

The theory is that the water bender they were looking for was Hana who escaped from the fire nation prison. They expected her to return to her home tribe in the south pole. Unknown to them she stayed in the fire nation. The reason they no longer take prisoners is because of her blood, bending technique and word of her being able to do this would have spread throughout the Fire nation Navy.
@Auron1Roxas29 ай бұрын
This theory is very clearly false. For one thing the timeline doesn't match up. Hama escaped while still very young, the gaang meet her when she's an old woman. Blood bending was also still unknown, even to the fire nation so they wouldn't have known she was controlling them specifically through waterbending. If they did they'd have spread propaganda about it to further justify their reasoning for taking out water benders, just like they did for the airbenders. I think they decided to not apply the rule of showing no emotion so Koh can't steal a face to make him more of a menace (and also probably because it's extremely hard for a human to actually be inexpressive), all while combining all the times Aang went to the spirit world during Book 1 into one single episode so they can move the story along. If it is to make Team Avatar face danger in the Spirit World, then using Koh as the threat is the best solution. But of course they needed a reason to make Koh the threat, so using the Fog of the Lost Souls (an element from The Legend of Korra) and have Koh hunt for victims there and actually act as a real predator not only makes him much more of a threat, but also makes him even creepier. And I just love that they made Koh's relationship with the Avatar even more complex. Not only they kept the fact he stole Ummi's face, but they also made him to have some history with other Avatars, including Roku... something they did in order to give Aang an excuse to go to the former's temple, since they are scrapping the nine-month-limit for the latter to learn the elements.

So 1 live action episode equals 3 animated episodes. I’ve seen a lot of people say that they’re rushing these storylines but if you do the math, they aren’t. 20 minutes x 20 episodes is 400 minutes. 50 minutes x 8 episodes is also 400 minutes. It’s literally the same amount of time.

I felt the same when seeing Percy Jackson LA, cause being a hardcore fan of the books, I was just happy to see my characters brought to life even if the story changed in many ways. The essence was still there. Yes, there is a lot of tell - not show in these LA adaptations, but I don't mind it. It is still FUN. Because I chose to stop comparing, and start seeing in its own right. They got the bending right, many of the characters right (especially Zuko, Iroh, Sokka), my only caveats are Aang (he will improve, he has grown by what 3-4 years since filming? he will surprise in S2), same with Katara. But I loved the entire season. Next episode is a highlight for me. And the final one is mind blowing! It captures the heart of the show 8/10 times. i think with this episode i have run out of fucks to give for this show, i have been trying my best to give the show a chance especially with the first omashu episode being so good but its clear the team that was in charge of the shows visuals and effects were incredibly talented and they thought it was enough to make up for some pretty appalling writing and story direction. the sad fact is they have proved they can do some things well, for instance the combining of the stories in the first omashu episode was handled amazingly, the writing for iroh and sokka the whole time has been pretty great but that just makes the bad parts which is 75% of the writing and pretty much all the rearranging of the story and motivations

I give this show a 4/10…mainly because of VFX and Zuko/Iroh scenes…This was the episode and then beginning of episode 6 I had to shut it off lol. I gave up. I never expected this to be a 1:1 adaptation but it really felt like the creators thought they will not get a season 2. As fans of the OG we know these characters, know who they are. I think a-lot of people are excited because they are just witnessing it come to LA and atleast to some extent matching the aesthetics. But no there is no proper explanation or no essence of who these characters actually are. Combining so many different characters that come at different points it really doesn’t serve any purpose to the story. Katara and Sokka ending up in the spirit world makes no sense at all. There is no need to introduce Azula or Ozai right now. Could’ve used those minutes to flesh out more characters. Wan Shi Tong is quite important lol and he should be at the library. It still exists at this point, he oversees it and has been prior to the 100 year war. Also Hei Bai? Totally wasted that character. Koh eats his food??? lol he is a god damn face stealer..much more menacing and audience is left with no fear for him. Lets not even go to Roku my god. Also the show is called Avatar master of all 4 elements…Aang be like nah I don’t want to learn water bending this season. Where is the mystery with this show that we had???? Changes are acceptable when it makes the story better. This does not. It seems like Netflix stepped in and said lets add this and this….also this because fans love these characters. Its just fan service. NO. More and more I see why the creators left. They were disrespected with their source material. At the end of the day they are the creators, they should have the approval like Oda did for One Piece. I can keep going on and on but as a true fan of the OG I can’t respect what they have done here.

You're not a true fan for disliking it. It's fine you disliked it though, same way it's fine that other OG fans liked it. Not because of 'just' seeing things in real life, but because they appreciated the adaptation (or parts of it) for what they were and enjoyed watching it.

I don’t understand Eric saying to not compare the original and the live action: People are literally watching it because of the original that’s the reason it’s so popular they literally have the same name
@DarthTingleBinks10 ай бұрын
That just shows you misunderstand his point. He's not saying NOT to compare it, he's saying to not let your comparison affect your opinion of the live action show. If you focus so much on comparing them and seeing whether or not the live action show lives up to the original, then you're just going to be consistently disappointed, and that's not the feeling anyone wants to come away with after watching a show.

@@DarthTingleBinks But FANS are watching this because of the animated show! Exclude fresh viewers. I agree that you do not have to compare constantly but you have to compare at some points bc you are fan of OG show. Like I did not nitpick about every moment that is diffirent from animated show but as a fan this show did not give me the feeling of the animated series. The only thing I loved about the changes is Zuko, Iroh and thier dynamic. Our main 3 is just meh. I am just sying that if you are fan you just cannot stop comparing it with animated show. After all LA follow the same story, features the same characters and so on. LA is not about new stuff. It is ADAPTION. And I am gonna judge how it adapts the animated series as a fan.
@DarthTingleBinks10 ай бұрын
@@damirturakbayev5215 1. It's an adaptation, not adaption. That's not a word. 2. The entire point of adaptations is to do something new. And the show succeeded at that while also telling the same general story as the original. 3. I understand that most people watching this are fans of the original. It's the same for me. But other than poor performances, cramming too many storylines into episodes 5 & 6, and occasionally spotty CG, I didn't let any of the changes affect my enjoyment of the show. I actually liked all of the changes the show made and occasionally preferred the new show to the original. But sure, overall, I think the original is superior as far as book 1 goes. But this show is more than sufficient as an adaptation.
@damirturakbayev521510 ай бұрын
@@DarthTingleBinks But do you agree that this show does not give the same overall feeling that animated show gives? For me this show feels like okay, move on kind of thing. This is just first season and I hope it gets better but for a fresh viewer I would not recommend this. I would say just watch the animated series. But if person for some reason do not like animation then sure you would recommend LA. But I would give a warning that LA does not feel like animated series and you cannot fully experience the world of ATLA with this show.

The cramming of the Spirit World elements was soo sloppy. They didn't follow the canon whatsoever. Aang pullin Katara & Sokka into the Spirit World? Wtf? Koh is the Facestealer for a reason yet they ignored what their abilities are, Hei Bei sending them to the Fog of Lost Souls? Like wtf?? How can we not compare both shows when 1 is jus making crap up and expecting us jus to ignore it. Naw I'm good, outside of Irohs story in this episode the rest was awful imo.
@testing156710 ай бұрын
I don't mind straying from cannon as long as all the character development points and story beats are there, and I liked most of this Netflix series, but the changes to the spirit world suck out in a bad way for me. It wasn't enough to take me out of my enjoyment of the series as a whole, but it was definitely a low point. Although it was nice to see how Katara's mom protected her.
