fun fact: Toph uses a modified style of earth bending (the normal being based on Hung Gar) based on Chow Gar or southern praying mantis style, a style that according to legend was invented by a blind woman

I always thought that the reason she could see the rocks in the air is because she knew where they came from and guessed the trajectory, if you watch back she could sometimes do that with the dude with the mask, she threw him to the air and hit him multiple times before he hit the ground again

i figure it has something to do with skill, like sensing your element. because if you remember in the past episodes with waterbending for example- in JET aang and katara bend out water they cannot see they just know its there. they never really explain but these are my thoughts...

Nah, dude; as Pollyander also said, Toph is EXTREMELY gifted at sensing her element, no matter where it is or how small it is. It's why she's able to do what she does later on in the series (No spoilers; you KNOW what I'm talking about). She doesn't have to "guess" anything; she KNOWS where her element is at all times.

Boulder was based on Rock. They planned to have Rock to voice Boulder but his schedule was too busy so they had other wrestler Mick Foley to voice him

16:30: For people in positions of affluence, the opinions of other people are everything. Also, the problem isn't Toph bein blind. It's just that the Blind Bandit isn't part of how they _want_ to see their daughter. So to prevent Toph from picking up behavior they view as becoming, they think essentially locking her up is the answer.

When avatar first came out I thought it was just a bootleg rip off of anime but than I saw my little brother watching this episode and Toph was just (and still is) the most bad ass character and had me intrigued. Now to this day Avatar is my all time favorite! Thank you blind bandit!!

This episode is a great example of overbearing parents. In their attempts to protect their children, they instead undermine them to a fatal degree. Luckily Toph was rebellious enough to pull away from that toxic form of love, but a lot of kids/teens don't have it in them sadly. A toxic parent will shelter you to the point where you are unfit for adulthood, and in turn you will never leave them. A good parent will prepare you for the real world and raise you to be a competent individual.

I see you caught that Toph can sense any Earth. Even if it isn't not connected to the ground. A lot of Reactor's miss that. Some don't think it's possible. Even though she does it. Also The creators have confirmed it.

She doesn't use sound. She explains she uses her feet to feel vibrations. It's not her ears are at all. Bu this is how it's done. They show the precedent of Aang's connection with the spirit world for the third time, the swamp draws him out, gives him the vision to find her. Like Q giving Bond the gadget he'll need at the end but Bond still has to figure out how to use it to get out of the situation at the end. Aang could find her but still had the challenge of convincing her to join. It's about the set up and the challenge equals the pay off and it means the plot device is NOT a Duex Ex Machina. Precedent plus challenge.

Nobody has seen an airbender in over 100 years, and I heard that the creators mentioned that all the wind effects you see from Aang when he bends is only for the benefit of the audience, to the characters themselves, unless there's dust or debris caught up in it, they see nothing.

​@@Dilligff The *characters* actually know he cheated, that's the whole reason they go after Aang and Toph for cheating. But I've never seen any reactor, or people in the comments talk about how totally unfair Aang was, and it was why he was feeling so bad too, why he looked like that at the end, cuz he knew what he'd done. He totally cheated and he knows it. But I just find it odd that all reactors I see are like "yeah, Aang!" Instead of "omg, you cheated!" Cuz that's always my first thought seeing that scene, and I've never heard anyone talk about it.

@@angeljaceherondale They 'eventually' came to the conclusion that he 'cheated', but it wasn't immediate. One of those "wait a minute..." type moments. And no argument that Aang felt bad, when his entire goal was just to get close enough to talk to her and ended up tarnishing her rep instead. If you're referring to the reactors there is one simple answer to that. Toph's introduction is simply so badass that nobody really focuses on the cheat detail. Aang is ultimately just a kid, raised in a temple, that didn't quite understand where he was and what it meant to step on that platform when he impulsively went to talk to her.

This episode is the turning point in this season. From now on, none of the episodes even come close to being mediocre, hence why Book 2 has the strongest array of single episodes in quick succession. Book 3 is many peoples favourite, but Book 2 episode by episode is stronger IMO.

Eh, I'm not particularly fond of The Chase. Or at least not the first half of it. Once they give Appa a bath, the episode is fine til the end. City of Walls and Secrets isn't that great either. Very important for the plot, but I tend to skip it on rewatch.

In the A:TLA comics, which are considered canon, and somewhat in the Legend of Korra, it is shown that the Beifongs have more than enough money to run an entire city, or even multiple cities. Compare that to our world, where there is a U.S. city run (and basically owned) by Johnson & Johnson, which is a multi-, Multi-, MULTI-BILLION dollar international pharmaceutical and chemical corporation, and that gives us some idea of how insanely loaded the Beifongs are; they're the original Crazy Rich Asians, LOL!
