I wasn't even born, but my older sister, who was living with our grandmother at the time, told me that Grandma started to scream herself to death when she learned that her son had died in a car accident. Many years later, my sister and I are watching Avatar 2, and when this scene arrived, she told me : "That is the exact same scream Grandma did when Uncle Victor died." Shout out to Zoé Saldana, who embodies so accurately the pain of so many mothers.

His coping mechanism seems to be shutting down into that cold, military mode. Plus like, you hear it in his voice that he's *barely* containing himself when Neteyam is asking to go back to the Omaticaya. He's just putting on a brave face to keep the others safe. The man is broken and barely holding it together, and we see that when he visits Neteyam's soul at the Spirit Tree. It's something I really appreciate, despite Jake being this skilled warrior, they let him cry, they let him have the emotion. Through the first film he doesn't really get those moments, so I'm glad it was allowed to happen here.

This scene rips me to shreds, because it's very similar to how I reacted when someone I loved very much died too. I used to have an adorable gosling, whose survival out of the egg was an absolute miracle. My 2 geese had kept going through repeated failed attempts with eggs for years, and, unlike the others before him, this was the first and only gosling that not only made it through the hatching process, but also managed to live life for a brief period afterwards. He was so adorable and precious to me. He was completely fine and lively the last time I checked on him, but when I went down the next time to check on him, I discovered his dead body lying there. And at that exact moment, the way I reacted was VERY similar to how Neytiri acts here. Neytiri's 2nd and 3rd screams starting at 0:38, combined with her horror when looking at the sight of her son's dead body, you can see the denial and shock there, that she can't believe her son has just died and what has just happened, and that's the part that hits the hardest in this vid for me, because this is just about exactly how I reacted. I didn't full-on scream like this, but it was very close to it. I just collapsed face down on the ground, and wailed and wailed at the top of my lungs, crying harder than I ever had before, and I wouldn't have even cared if the neighbours would have overheard. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing, that my beautiful gosling was gone. My 2 geese were much like Jake, more solemn, but clearly definitely as hard-hit as I was, I could see the grief in their faces. Zoe is such a flipping good actress, she perfectly portrays what the worst of grief is like in this scene, because it's realistic, I felt and experienced this same exact measure of grief myself. She should get an award for this level of acting.

And what Cameron does with Neytiri next is enough to terrify any fan.... But he still manages to make us care about Neytiri. Thats the work of a great filmmaker

I think just tonally Star Wars was going for something different. Avatar and Star Wars cover a similar topic, but in vastly different ways. Especially the first Star Wars was so pulpy and fast paced that I think the understated shock of Leia works well in the context of the film. It’s in the middle of the film, a big emotional beat would just be kind of odd in the edit when the rest of the movie is the way it is. It’d stick out like a sore thumb. It’d have to he the most important moment of the film, and I’m sorry but it just isn’t. You can’t just take one thing from one movie and place it another and expect it to work.

Neytiri being a cartoon is not an edge, I think it’s a bigger challenge to get a convincing performance out of a cartoon because there’s the added hurdle of convincing the audience it’s even present in the moment. That’s what makes these films such marvels is that you buy that this CGI character is a living, breathing thing. Cameron’s not the only one who’s pulled that off, but most filmmakers don’t and it’s a huge achievement when any film does that. Besides the point though. And my stance is Leia’s reaction works perfectly fine in the context of the movie and I can only imagine giving her a reaction like Neytiri’s in this movie would detract from the film. It’s a different type of movie. Star Wars has never been about the same sort of tactile, realism Cameron’s all about. Even though Lucas is new Hollywood, he’s always exhibited more old Hollywood sensibilities.

I didn't expect to cry watching a bunch of CGI aliens lose a family member but Avatar The Way of Water did it. Zoe Saldana should get way more recognition as an actress because her performance here and immediately afterwards when she goes into beast mode is incredible
