My father owned a brick chamber named Gokula Krishna Brick Works. During 1974, I remember ECC company was constructing a hotel building. My father supplied bricks for that hotel building construction. I went several times in our lorries to that site!

As a school going student along with my friends we have seen this being constructed. We have walked thru the in gate and walked off the out to gate, using this as our short cut 😊. We have seen cricketers get into the bus/out of the bus. Especially the West Indian greats. I remember Iyer's special delicacy, Vazhaipazha dosa which carried a special mention on the hoarding hanging outside the hotel. So many fond memories. You have kindled my memories Sriram ji. The hotel was opened much before 1985. I remember that on the day Indira Gandhi was assassinated (October 31, 1984), our school was closed for the day and we were asked to go home. Since all transport had been stopped too, we had to walk home. I clearly remember walking by the Adyar Gate Hotel on that day.

Very good piece of information. The iyer’s name is Parameswara Iyer. His coffee was very renowned for its taste. It is another matter that it was very expensive and beyond the reach of the common man. In the late eighties, a portion of Thayir Sadham was 150/-

As far as i know the goyals bought majority of shares sometime in the niceties. Goyals had garment business andctheir own brand also. The property opposite anna arivalayam was their garment making unit. There's a highrise building now.

Five star hotels had relevance in the 1980s where the major industry was manufacturing which had headquarters around Mount Road and Parry's corner. But now it is only service industry like Information Technology dominates the scene and they operate remote mainly in the outskirts. Their requirement is not luxurious stay but well equipped conference rooms, internet, compact rooms with comfortable bed to sleep and an average cost. That is why 3 star hotels flourished near airports and outskirts with less traffic issues. The 5 star hotels all over India are facing crisis and many would follow Adyar Gate Hotel route.

I remember in and around 1971 there were two large British era houses in the property. These two bungalows were demolished to build the hotel. I still remember that when i used to college i used to see TT Vasu and his foreign wife gazing at the property where construction was stalle. I thought that it was at this stage the property was sold.

Sir, can you provide the history of Chola Sheraton? I am not sure as to what is its current name. I am referring to the one at Cathedral road near the Gopalapuram road cutting… I used to walk by this in 90s while working for TCS and remember seeing a stone plank that Gandhiji had stayed here

Gandhiji certainly did not stay there. The hotel came up in the early 1970s and was developed by the ITC Group. After decades of franchise arrangement with the Sheraton group, it went by a sub-brand of the ITC Grouo called Fortune hotel and recently has been rebranded as a Welcom hotel.
