Dude, I love this. I retarded exhaust cams one tooth when I swapped an EJ20X in place of an EJ255 on a Legacy. It had dual AVCS and I was putting in place of single AVCS. This is such a good explanation of why. Thanks for posting! Also, I am going to experiment on an old EJ25D dual cam non turbo engine with retarding exhaust cam timing to reduce overlap.

I might need to do this on my ej20x going in place of my ej25. I'm doing the timing belt soon so might as well do this as well, did you have to plug the avcs oil ports on the exhaust cams or anything like that? Apparently a lot of people are saying you have to do that.
@stvnswld8 ай бұрын
@@D310N12 if you keep the AVCS cam gears on the exhaust cams you only need to adjust the exhaust timing a tooth. You only need to plug those holes in the cams if you try to use your original non AVCs cam gears on the AVCS cams. If you already have the timing set, it’s easy to adjust back a tooth by putting a 1/4” hose in between the belt and the gear and barring the engine over. It’ll make the belt jump a tooth. Does all of that make clear sense?
@D310N128 ай бұрын
@stvnswld @stvnswld yeah that makes sense. Im using the avcs cams and gears so i should be good then. I haven't installed the timing belt yet so when I go to install the new one I should just be able to move the exhaust one tooth before putting on the belt, correct?

@@D310N12 yes, make sure to retard the gear and not advance it. You got this. Let me know how it comes out!

Have you ever measured the specs of the ej208 cams? I'm running them in my ej255 and I'm curious if this advance of the intake cams would apply or not. Or if maybe I should go back to 255 cams and plug the oil ports.

So if I use the EJ25 AVCS cam, I have to plug AVCS port and advanced it by a tooth if I want to run it on my 04 non AVCS WRX? What cam gear should I run (AVCS or non AVCS)?

I purchased the IATuning AVCS delete to block the oil ports on my JDM EJ205 which has single AVCS. In doing so I am swapping the cam gears from my 2002 WRX USDM EJ205 which is non AVCS. In speaking to IATuning they told me that all I need to do is swap over my cam gears and block the ports and time the motor as according to usual and it will fix the need to adjust timing any other way to account for the deletion. What are your thoughts? Will I need to advance the gears any teeth when timing the motor?
@426440 Жыл бұрын
To be honest I’m not sure about the timing on the EJ205 cams. Do you know if the PN for the cam gear is the same as the EJ255/7?

I'm doing this swap now, did you have to advance the timing? Also on avcs did you block the oil feed lines or leave them?

Hello, I have legacy engine is ej204 2.0l n/a dohc which runs slugish, hesitation and shaking at 2k-3k rpm and no ce light. Obd showed that the left and right avcs valves was not synchronized so I replaced both of them but the problems remains 😩 Any thoughts? 🙏
@426440 Жыл бұрын
I would guess you might have a cam that has slipped teeth on the timing belt, or an avcs gear that isn’t working correctly

@@426440 Thanks for reply. The thing is that the car runs perfect one day and the next day runs like trash for a couple of days and than perfect again and so on… Could it be cloged banjo bolt filters?
@426440 Жыл бұрын
The banjo bolt filters are usually in line to the turbo, I don’t think I’ve seen them on the banjo bolts supplying the OCVs but I could be wrong. It could be that though. It also may be your cam sensors themselves since its an intermittent issue. An intermittent problem tells me its electrical and not mechanical.

I don't think this will work the OEM computer will have fit setting sync issues since it uses the back of the cam gear for syncing.

I'm currently eliminating the AVCS (stock STI cams) in my 2007 EJ257 to go into my 2002 wrx. Do you think the EJ257 requires the same one tooth advancement as your block with the non-AVCS cam gears being used?
@426440 Жыл бұрын
Yes - it will run either way but you will make a lot more mid range if you advance them a tooth.
@quocle461411 ай бұрын
Do you have to plug the AVCS cam? Or you just leave it as it and advance a tooth?
@areexsevenproject11 ай бұрын
@quocle4614 It depends what you are doing with the swap really. I took out both AVCS by tapping and plugging with threaded steel plugs with red loctite. I put the stock WRX cam gears on. Leave the top oil feeds to the heads alone as it's the heads oil supply.

Did it set any codes by having the timing off 1 tooth??? Since the inteke cam has the trigger wheel... Okay, so i found another video that talks about retarding the exhaust cams 1 tooth on the acvs ej20x... So i may try advancing the intake cams 1 tooth and retarding the exhaust cams 1 tooth. Maybe i will do a dyno pull. Change the timing and then check again. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6S2ZIuwiNyaabssi=Bl9xGRbpMKUYw0HU
@426440 Жыл бұрын
No codes - I can’t speak from experience on the exhaust cams, but you could adjust them as well. I believe if you have exhaust AVCS the natural state is advanced and they retard into additional overlap, you you likely need to retard the exhaust cams. You should check with a degree wheel though if you are going to use a non-avcs exhaust sprocket. On the intake cams it appears Subaru moved the dowel pin in the cam and not the location in the gear, but I would verify that the exhaust is the same case.

Ive been looking for info like this, for a while now as it seems no one has done it, i have a JDM ej20x with dual acvs(intake and exhaust) in my 03 wrx, deleted the acvs on all 4 cams and for sure low to mid range is sluggish, wondering if the exhaust timing needs to be changed also.
@426440 Жыл бұрын
Yeah low and mid range off boost will be sluggish due to the lack of valve overlap

I got ej20x with 05 sti ecu im deleting exhaust avcs gonna retard it 2 teeth but if im running avcs on intake with avcs intake cam sprockets should i still advance intake cam gears a tooth?
@426440 Жыл бұрын
If you’re going to use the AVCS no, time it normally. If you advance it a tooth you will be running cam timing thats too far advanced to make good power, and end up with piston to valve clearance issues using the avcs.
