The daughter of an Air Force Colonel, Heather "Lucky" Penney had dreams about becoming a fighter pilot just like her father. When congress opened up combat aviation to women, Penney did not hesitate to sign up. After her training, she was assigned to the 121st fighter squadron of the District of Columbia Air National Guard.
As the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 began to unfold, Penney and her commanding officer, Colonel Marc Sasseville, locked eyes and knew they needed to get airborne as quickly as possible. The pair climbed into their unarmed F-16 fighter jets and took to the skies.
Word had come down that a Boeing 757 had descended and turned-around near Cleveland and was now heading back towards the Capitol.
Unarmed and with 'Shoot-to-kill' orders the pair made the decision they would ram their fighter jets into Flight 93 to prevent it from reaching its target.

I remember being terrified of seeing their jets flying over my elementary school when this happened (i was in 5th grade)...years later, I served in the same unit as a fighter aircraft mechanic where Gen Sasseville was my wing commander. Some years into serving, I heard this story and nearly lost it --- it all clicked that it was them that i saw flying overhead. Thank you all for your service and your willingness to protect our nation's capitol at any cost 🙏🏾

We are immigrants to the United States from a prominent Moslem country in the Middle-East. We were treated very well by Americans. On 9/11, I was living and working in the American Midwest and most of my colleagues were white conservative gentlemen. In response to the terrorist attacks, they circled the wagons and protected me against ignorance and hate. Some friends advised me to shave my beard. I said that I have faith in the character of Americans. So, I kept my beard. Not only did our family not receive any act of hate or intimidation, but we were loved and protected by Americans -- white, black and Latino -- but especially by white males. I know that some in the U.S. have suffered from real racism, but we shouldn't only hear the bad news. We should also hear the good, and there is much of it. We have many friends born and raised Moslem from the middle-east. None that I know, had negative experiences. In fact, many of us have been welcomed into this country with open arms. We have been loved and made to feel at home in U.S.A. I wish that Moslems would welcome Americans into their countries as Americans have welcomed Moslems. May God bless the U.S.A.

Good to see Penny is still out there and active. I won't bother delving into my own boring story (wholly irrelevant here), but I assisted launching them that day.....and when they returned, I distinctly recall the look on her face. While Col Sasseville looked grim and determined, I recall Penny looked both horrified and stunned silent......the "thousand yard stare", as it were. I handed out cold sodas to any pilot who wanted one......just as a connection with home ground. And while planes sitting on alert status was - nationally - a very small segment of our AF/ANG mission prior to 9-11 (for instance, I pulled alert duty in Alaska back in the '80s, flying against the Soviet Union's regular flights of Bear bombers off our western coast), this particular day changed our mission priorities in a huge way. No, we didn't have planes loaded to the gills sitting around (everything costs money and every penny of YOUR MONEY spent must to be justified), but today, of course, we do, in multiple locations. Anyway, most of us were eventually deployed for OIF in 2003, including Penny. Most of the folks who supported ground operations that day have retired......some have passed. Good to see Penny doing well.

They stood up and said NO! Not this flight. Not this day. And took action. They knew they would die, yet they did it anyway. Yes, the police and firemen were heroes as well. Shameful negligence, indecision, unpreparedness and/or incompetence by the people in charge of these EXPENSIVE fighter planes, that US taxpayers PAY FOR. They're not for joy rides, Hollywood movies, Military Air Shows, or mock dogfights, they're for situations like 9/11, and they should have been ready to make a difference that day. If they're not prepared to do what needs to be done, or do ANYTHING, better to give those BILLIONS of $$$ back to the taxpayers so we can use it for food, housing and gas expenses. This REALLY pisses me off when I think about it... we should have higher standards imo. We sure showed THEM how hard it is to attack us, didn't we?? SMH...

@@Bondek1996 Good job Tom Clancy. Not sure when that was written, but maybe he gave ideas to the terrorists?? I guess if "someone in the military" told him that, the book reflected the same... ie, US helplessness (which I don't buy, by the way). They could have been harassed by other planes, threatened to be shot down if they did not immediately turn their course away from populated areas (ie Washington DC), and they could have had planes passing in front of their path and circling them, to intimidate them into landing somewhere. If the plane still crashed that wouldn't have been any worse than what actually happened. Also why couldn't a squadron of Black Hawks/other helicopters have been put into the sky between the plane and Washington DC (the likely target), with warnings before they got there, bluffs, and/or actual light weapon fire to at least TRY to divert the plane, and get it to land voluntarily?? "We might have damaged one of our planes, or risked the safety of our pilots." What the F#$% is out military FOR?? I realize this might not have worked, but if troops/vehicles had been TRAINED for scenarios, and ready to go airborne at a moment's notice, they could have at least tried. No disrespect intended towards you, but it sounds like you're trying to defend/make excuses for them... I'd rather raise their standards a little higher. They're using billions of $$$ of US citizens' money to build those planes and helicopters (and other vehicles), might as well use them when we're under attack, right?? "If you do not IMMEDIATELY change course, and you fly past Point X, we will shoot you out of the sky. Land at such-and-such airport (the most rural area possible)... or on such-and-such Interstate highway"... if a section could have been closed quickly, which wouldn't take long (police cars blocking the interstate in both directions for a few miles, and entrance ramps). I'm not saying it would have been easy, but if there was preparedness ahead of time for different scenarios, there would have been a plan (ie of action, not inaction). If Tom Clancy could think up these scenarios, and terrorists can, I would think our "military intelligence" might have envisioned some of them also... if they didn't, they're idiots. If they did envision this, and had NO plan to bring down the plane (safely or otherwise), or divert it from major targets, what the hell are we paying them for? For example suppose a foreign military plane enters our airspace, with known or unknown weapons (possibly nukes, who knows), do they have no plan or strategy for diverting those planes away from major cities with millions of people living in them?? Of course they do... or maybe being military, they'd just shoot them down. Unless of course they were afraid of "offending" another country, like we avoid "offending" people who cross our borders illegally, because hey, we should be open to anyone, REGARDLESS of what they're coming here for, right DEMOCRATS??? My opinion of course... rant over... just saying. 🙏

We had a couple of real-world events during my time in the USAF where the "normal" activities stopped and you began to execute your mission as trained until whenever and the only thing the clock was used for was to hit our task completion points. We never reached a point of exhaustion and for certain flying an F-16 unarmed against a totally unknown threat for several hours and multiple sorties - that had to leave them drained and yet they knew that until they told otherwise they just kept repeating that task. Her candor and explanation is excellent and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SHARING YOUR STORY. I was out of the service, living and working in the DC area and it was so eerie for those first 5-10 days when you did not hear airliners and then you heard a jet and you could tell it was a fighter doing their CAP flights. A real mental change of state.

As a Middle-Eastern man, born and raised Moslem, I salute the bravery of American men and women on that dreadful day. May God have mercy and give eternal peace to all the victims, especially those firefighting heroes who voluntarily gave their lives so that others would live. The difference between evil and good could not be more clear on that day: Evil drove some to give their lives so that others would die. Good drove many to give their lives so that others would live. I hope that the people from where I come from see how great a woman can be, like this beautiful (outside and inside) lady fighter pilot hero. I wish I were half the man (or woman) that those heroes were.

I remember that horrible day so clearly. I'm a double USAF brat (both Mom and Dad). Dad was Rapid Deployment Force. I was at work serving in my HR role and my boss called me into the break room where we had a TV. His instructions were so clear. "Our nation is under attack. I need you to be here and ready for our team. I will be with you." I knew that our military was staffed with people like my folks we would be OK. Yes this would be hard but America has done hard and we always come out on top. When the proverbial $h!t hits the fan is where we get together and say in one voice "NO This will not do." I pray we find that again but in peace.

I will never forget that morning either. I was a firefighter paramedic for a suburb outside Dallas, TX. I had gotten off from a 24 hour shift and was driving home which was about an hour away. I was listening to a local sports radio show while I was driving home, 1310 The Ticket Dallas/Fort Worth, The Musers in the Morning. I remember when one of the radio host came and told us about the first plane hitting. I thought to myself how the hell do you fly into a skyscraper. I believed the first one was an accident as many others did . Then when they announced the 2nd plane hitting the other tower I knew. I pulled into a convivence store in Glen Rose, TX. I asked the clerk if had a TV and he nodded and pointed to a little 12 inch TV that already had the news on. We stood beside each other in silence as we watched. After what seemed like an hour but was more like 10 minutes I walked outside and called my Chief to see If I needed to come back to work . He said just hang tight for a little bit. I watched the TV for about another 30 minutes until my Chief notified me to go on home. I arrived at my grandfather's house a few minutes before the first tower fell. We did not even say a word to each other we just nodded and I sat down at the kitchen table with my grandfather and we watched the TV until my wife got off work later that afternoon. As I left my grandfather's house he said "son, go hug your wife, the world will never be the same again. This is your generations Pearl Harbor." I walked in the door of my house and hugged my wife. We watched the news until the early hours of September the 12th.

Thank you for sharing this experience. It is harrowing and moving and I feel such a deep sense of respect and pride for all those who died or were willing to die that day. The world will never be the same because of those events, but at the same time we saw real heroes born and the resilience of humanity that day and in the days and weeks that followed. As a young college student watching those events unfold live on tv, I wondered what my future would hold and it felt bleak. That attitude changed after the events and stories of bravery, courage, sacrifice, compassion, respect, selflessness and honor began to be seen and heard. At such a dark time in our nations history, some of the brightest light was shining through the good men and women of this country. The evil intents of wicked men darkened our nations skies for a time but it did not prevail because the good people of this nation let the light of goodness shine, and oh how brightly it shined-and still does.

I was doing a locate at a small private airport in N/E Wisconsin when an Air National Guard Gunship fly over at just above tree level. It was flanked by two F16's and two Apache Helicopters. It was a scary thing to witness, made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Our Country was at war, with an unknown enemy. Military or lifeflight aircraft were the only aircraft in the sky. The Spitfire is an incredible aircraft but was not the true hero of the Battle of Britain. "A total of 1,715 Hawker Hurricanes flew with Fighter Command during the period of the Battle of Britain, far in excess of all other British fighters combined. It is estimated that Hawker Hurricane pilots were credited with four fifths of all enemy aircraft destroyed in that critical period from July to October 1940." It was in fact the slower Hurricane that was expected to concentrate on the slower German bombers while the faster Spitfire mainly went after their fighter escort. I find it sad that the Hawker Hurricane and its brave pilots is largely forgotten or overlooked in its role during the war.

What a day. Great to have her 1st hand account recorded. A lot of brave people rallied on 93, rest their souls... And, bless these NG pilots who rolled and were willing to take on a threat, initially unarmed - that's got to be a doubled down gutcheck...

Heather Penney you are amazing. I was in South Korea wrapping up my tour there when 9/11 happened. It is a day I will never forget. Your story is one of the best. Thank you for all you have done. We need more hero’s like you.

@@GodLovesYou1624 I served 7 years and I did reenlist but not until 2003. Back in 2000-2001 a tour in Korea was 12 months. I was there from sept 2000-sept 2001. But this is not about me. It’s about a brave pilot and her amazing experience, and her love for our great country. She is a hero, I was just a guy that went through the motions and got out.
