"We basically laid siege to the entire city of Fallujah; destroyed like two thirds of the city; created like 200,000 refugees, & killed possibly up to 6,000 civilians. It was a really bad, bad moment & I was part of that, unfortunately. I mean, this was absolutely catastrophic for the people living in Fallujah... The whole mission was kind of structured indiscriminately. Our command told us that there were no civilians in the city; that everyone we were going to face in the city were combatants. They told us they were hardcore terrorists & that was actually not true. There were 50,000 civilians still in the city because we did not allow military aged males to leave the city. Anyone from age 15 to 55 were not allowed to flee the city. So they were forced to stay in the city and make due & then we bombed the city very indiscriminately for the weeks leading up to the siege - to the actual ground siege. Then during the ground siege, we used indiscriminate weapons and indiscriminate tactics. An indiscriminate weapon for example being the white phosphorus which you'd drop from the sky & it comes down in these big fireballs that kinda drift in the wind & cover not a precise target but a big area of land & we also used tactics like reconnaissance by fire which is house to house fighting, so if you don't know what's in a house, if you don't know if there's fighters or if there's anybody at all in the house, you fire into it first & then if you hear screaming or moaning or whatever, you can be sure that there are people in there & we would assume that they were combatants & then we would bulldoze the house to the ground. If you heard nothing, it was probably safe to enter. By definition, that tactic is indiscriminate and it's a war crime & this is how we conducted ourselves during the 3 weeks of this operation." -- Ross Caputi, U.S. Marine veteran, HuffPost Live video interview titled: 'The Siege of Fallujah Ross Caputi talks about his time as a soldier in Iraq'

@@danam0228 respectfully, not even close. Different ideologies and different war. Afghanistan/Iraq was more in par to a Millennials' version of Vietnam. The closest war we've seen in comparison to World War II is the current Ukraine conflict. It also has erie similarities to the Winter War in the early parts of the conflict and WW1 with the trench fighting and the Spanish Civil War with the high amount of foreign volunteers fighting on both sides.

@@HelmetOfHonor In Vietnam they did not revere any god or emperor, and they didn't behead or have kamikazes/suicide bombers to the degree that the Japanese did. And the Russians employ neither even though Putin wishes people would revere him. This is someone whose uncle spent 4 years as a Japanese POW and watched 6 of his buddies get beheaded and said that the Muslims reminded him of the fanatics that were the Japs. Vietnam came close, but not as close as the Muslim extremists. And my cousin who served in Vietnam as a Marine has said so about the Vietn Cong

I was so grateful to hear this Marine mention the value of his Navy Corpsman. I've been providing hospice/home care for a 98 year old Corpsman who served in the Pacific. Sometimes he jokingly says, "the Marines said they were looking for a few good men. That's when we showed up!" He usually has a far away look in his eyes. It's an honor to take care of him. I feel like I'm doing it for my father too, who served in Vietnam. Thank you to all US veterans for your sacrifices to this day.

Now I haven't had the experiences, veterans like this Marine or others who have gone through hell. I want to help them more than just what my county or local VA can. Half the time, county services wont do anything. They dont care, yet want to send a thank you letter for those who served via email. I know there are groups out there that can help veterans, even ones who say they don't want it or arent ready. If there any groups that i can reach out to for these types of situations, please let me know. There are still many out there fighting the fight.

Former Fed LE / RN combat medic,Nam. Veterans centers might be one starting point that are and are not a part of the VA. If WIsc. has a state level vets affairs or similiar they might have some in house organizations. VFW, AL, DAV are okay but, serious lack of professional staff. Some MHP's might be hosting a weekly open night, or day, meeting / round table. Wounded Warrior and the Gary Sinese Foundation are excellent though they too are limited in scope. We're not bad people, just a few of us are still stuck in a slow motion perspective trying to keep up in an ever changing and to fast paced world as of late.

I’ve never been in the military but I can relate to him on the getting clean part. I was addicted to drugs from 17 to 26 im 28 now. But I can’t imagine how hard it had to be to finally have to process those feelings and grieve. For me that was one of the biggest challenges of getting clean cuz I had been numb for 9 years n if I had something bad happen I would get so f’ed up I couldn’t feel anything. But once you get clean dealing with feelings and emotions is extremely tough. So having to deal with stuff from war has to be infinitely harder. It makes me proud when I hear other people have gotten clean tho cuz it’s no easy task and A LOT of people fail. So congrats on that my guy! And thank you for serving our great country! One of the best things about being American is being able to have the confidence in our military n know we have the best of the best. We prolly stick our noses in stuff we shouldn’t sometimes but if something big ever happens I’ll feel so much better knowing American soldiers are protecting us! ❤

Sounds like the kind of guy that I would want with me when things got bad. Semper Fidelis, sir. From an old Marine that served during peace time. I had to kick a few doors in during my time as a police officer, but nothing compared to Fallujah.

I know how he felt; I wound up as a 3521 (motor T mechanic) but wished I’d gone 0311, grunt. I did see some combat tho in Deaert Storm as I was attached to an artillery battery. It was nothing compared to what these guys saw, and did tho.

My Brother, Dentist, 1st Lt US Navy attached to USMC Camp LeJune, saw no action in late 80's, he stated to his children who never wanted for anything, that there is misery in life, and the only way out, because you have all of this money, is Service to Others. This man, still in that conflict, now has the service mission of leaving none alone, none behind, and keep fighting through life. Their service makes the intensity beyond surreal, but it is still the same survival plan as all other battles to defeat misery by losing ourselves, our problems, removing ourselves from our will to implode, and do for others. It is still the buddy system.

I think what makes the PTSD for vets of OIF and OEF is the fact that the enemy was allowed to supply themselves and move and blend in with civilians. That is what all post ww2 conflicts have in common with our enemies. All that bravery and sacrifice of mental health and our actual lives, for a war that does not have a well defined victory or plan to be victorious. These guys were in an actual battle, unlike what happened to me. I was in afghanistan and got attacked by IED and mortar only a couple times. This was an actual battle and the enemy still used civilian shields. that is pychological warfare at its worst that terrorists love to exploit. I did not have to worry about big buidlings and every window possibly being the last thing I see in this world. urban warfare always favors the defenders.

Finally a conventional marine, I love hearing conventional soldiers and marines perspective on GWOT the real ground pounders still tons of respect for our SOF forces who’ve done amazing things for the nation during the war but it’s definitely been over popularized by the media it seems like you can never find any interviews or podcast with a marine or soldier who was in Ramadi or fallujah where real ground combat took place, like I said not taking anything away from the SOF guys

The Marines that trained me were mostly Fallujah vets. 3/1 India mct-1. The ones that fought well commanded respect. After trying to punch out our boot LT in the HQ building, a corporal Fallujah vet was demoted to private. He was still squad leader and for a while our acting platoon sergeant in Iraq years later on my first deployment. Glad my mind isn't as broken as his was, though.
