Dillon Behr is a former US Army Green Beret. He is a veteran of both the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. He received the Silver Star for his actions in Afghanistan at the Battle of Shok Valley.
Silver Star Citation:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Dillon L. Behr, United States Army, for exceptionally valorous conduct in the face of the enemy of the United States as Communications Sergeant, Operational Detachment Alpha 3336 (ODA-3336), 3d Special Forces Group (Airborne), Special Operations Task Force - 33, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 6 April 2008. Sergeant Behr heroically distinguished himself during a combined raid against a High Value Target while combat advising the Afghan Commandos in Shok Valley, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan. Sergeant Behr was serving as the Detachment Commander's radio operator. While he climbed a 60-foot near vertical cliff with a rucksack weighing more than 60 pounds, Insurgent forces initiated an unprecedented volume of coordinated sniper, machine gun, and Rocket Propelled Grenade fire from the surrounding high ground. Within seconds several Commandos were wounded, and an interpreter was killed. With total disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Behr held his position as bullets impacted within inches of him, even after sustaining a life-threatening wound to his leg. Sergeant Behr courageously continued to engage multiple Insurgent fighting positions despite being critically wounded a second time. Sergeant Behr's suppressive fire allowed wounded US and Afghan Soldiers to be evacuated to covered positions. Throughout the duration of the six and a half hour battle, Sergeant Behr continued to fight and kill the enemy, until he was physically incapable of holding his weapon. His absolute refusal to quit and poise under fire was a testament to his bravery, inspiring the other members of the patrol to fight on. Sergeant Behr's actions allowed US and Afghan Soldiers to move to covered positions and undoubtedly saved countless lives. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military heroism and reflect distinct credit upon himself, Special Operations Task Force - 33, the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan, Special Operations Command Central, and the United States Army.

I believe it’s all about perspective. Many discount what we did or say it was for wrong reasons but I never felt those feelings, ever. Most of the men I served with feel the same. It’s a small percentage that discount what did or say we were puppets for the rich and powerful. We killed captured evil people and helped rebuild and secure the countries we were in. There’s no denying that.

I haven't served in the U.S. Military; served 12 years in the British Army in the 70s and 80s, but I have watched several of these interviews with Veterans from Vietnam thru to Afghanistan and there seems to be one underlying annoying/depressing feature, which is that they were consistently being badly let down (to put it politely) by the higher-ups, meaning anything from their commanders to those in the Pentagon... my total respect to them.

I agree..l am an ex British Army serviceman....I worked with 1st Inf Div..or was it 3rd Inf? I remember the guys talking proudly of their Blue and White flash.....and talking of Audey Murphy ( a man that won your Medal of Honor in Italy...PLUS..played HIMSELF in the movie made about him...quite a man..) Also worked with..US Marines, 82nd and 101st Airborne...just SUPERB and remember them as handsome, strapping good looking chaps.all large in stature, proud and looking good..(ha..l am not gay or rainbow hahaha) Our troops were scarred and looked pretty frightful to them hahaha The absolute epitome of what your USA has...and they were bloody S.U.P.E.R.B...GREAT FELLOWS, GREAT COMRADESHIP, just.....SUPERB

Pains me to say this but I wouldn’t call it giving us freedom. If anything we are less free. Going into Afghanistan created the hotbed of international terrorism we have today. The biggest weapon used against us is fear, by both the friend and the enemy.

Biggest regret was not waiting until I had the opportunity to try out for SF. I joined artillery, hated it, missed everything meaningful to babysit an SPG and do boot things for my entire stay. Took 10 years to stop hating myself for not making it to the Middle East. Looking back, hearing these stories, I'm glad I didn't.

Astronaut Jonny Kim should do one on his Silver Star. After they came under attack, an Iraqi soldier was shot. His Iraqi comrades abandoned him, then he ran through a barrage of gunfire with bullets punching the ground by his feet to reach him, dragged him back, then treated him, but he succumbed to his wounds. A teammate said he succumbed to his wounds. Another Iraqi was shot in the head, then he exposed himself again, pulled him in, then saved him and organized the evacuation effort for the wounded men.

I just found this channel about 4 days ago and have been binge watching. I'm a veteran as well but could not even fathom what any of these warriors have faced. I just want to say one thing and that is, are ANY of the interviewers veterans? I only ask that because they always ask that one question and always get the same answer....I don't know of any veteran worth their salt that would respond with, "I'm proud of what I did", etc. PLEASE stop asking that question! To this day I hate it when someone says, "Thank you for your service" and not once have I ever used my "military discount". That's not what any soldier does it for. While I and I'm sure many of the interviewees appreciate it, it's just awkward and takes us to a place....

For those who didn’t serve in those countries to have their own experiences to fall on, don’t take this man’s words to heart. I’ve never met anyone who said the Afghanistan people appreciated our presence more than Iraq or that the Afghan mission was more meaningful. 90% of the Iraqis wanted us there, didn’t want Sadaam in power, and wanted the evil jihadist out of their country. We took out sadaams regime, and helped them rebuild a better government, and got rid of the ISIS and AlQaida in Iraq. Afghan was years of trying to get rid of Al qaida and the taliban, who are still There to this day. He must not have done much in Iraq to see the good we did there.

But overall we helped them in the long run. Think about this , we captured sadaam and he was ordered to be executed by his own country. He committed crimes that shouldn’t have allowed him to remain leader of Iraq. Is it our place to go there and play world police. No, but I do think it helped America and it’s Allie’s in the long run. Maybe I’m biased to my view and experiences.

to the comments below, i was in afghanistan and if i remember, we won most of our fights. the commenter below said this is extreme example is right. what doesn't get covered or talked about what the damage was to the enemy. He said there were 200 and they killed 150-thats 75 %. In vietnam, we won militarily. name one significant battle the north vietmanese or vietcong won! (don't say tet offensive, they lost 45,000 men then retreated) in 1971, I believe, the vietnamese wanted a peace treaty but Nixon cancelled it due to protests at home about bombing N. vietmam. let me repeat, the vietnamese wanted a peace treaty. My point is although what he went through was bad, its combat. I just sometimes resent how we portray the military. when I was in Afghanistan, Most of the time, when we came in close to them, they ran. The american fighting soldier has won the vast majority of our battles, the media doesn''t show the whole picture. They portray the american fighting soldier as always losing when most of the time we didn't, its just war is hell
