I greatly appreciate the basses' and tenors' contagious looks of intensity and profound joy the whole time they sing this piece! The power of those altos and the sweetness of the sopranos, as well! Props to all 9 of you, this is a truly heavenly and prayerful rendition of such a precious piece of sacred polyphony.

Exactly! This has caught my attention as well. It's as if, for a few minutes, they forgot the camera and sang as if there was only that piece of music in the universe. Beautiful. Also, kudos to the recording engineer for the perfect balance between voices and the exact dose of reverb.

it's sad that you say dreaded. this kind of attitude has perpetuated a straight-tone, homogenized sterility in choral music today. there are very few choirs now that know how to effectively use vibrato. perfectly blended sounds get BORING after a while. somehow the anglican boychoir sound became the standard for all of choral music lately and it's to its detriment. choirs like BYU Voces 8 Chanticleer Kings Singers and this ensemble do ONLY straight tone. Choirs even sing music from the Orthodox and Russian traditions like anglican boychoirs despite its historical inaccuracy.

This is the most beautiful and best performances of this masterpiece I have ever heard. And I have sung it in an excellent church choir, but we were not quite THAT good. This choir;s tone quality is stunning and incredibly lovely -- so pure and beautiful. And the tempi were perfect for this size of group and the space they were performing in, and the conductor held tge ends of the major sections for just the right amount of time, and had the perfect length of breaks between section. I wojld never have even heard of this group if Yourtube had not put this video as one of the suggested videos after I watched the Gesualdo Six perform Byrd's "Miserere mei". Thank you, Byrd Ensemnble!

Lovely rendition. I had the privilage of performing this piece in choir, at that time, doing the tenor lines. Loved the production too. It cracked me up though, seeing the folks turn the music pages, as if they were "reading" them. That whole choir knows this beautiful song & their part deep into their cells. That was fine showmanship. What is real was their tuning into the nuances of the choir director (who is brilliant btw). The choir was tuned into him like a radar. Lovely to hear & watch. Bravo!

I have sung in a group like this and I'm not disputing their expertise or beautiful tonality. What I am disputing is their own actions whilst singing this beautiful piece. I do understand their conductor doesn't seem to mind their interactions with him. I just find it very off putting as both a chorister and a conductor. It's just very distracting and takes away from the wonderful piece itself.
@vocalchords36093 жыл бұрын
@@monicamurray5090 I am sad to read your words. As a professional musician and choral singer/conductor - may I respectfully suggest, just close your eyes and listen. This is choral music of the highest standard - and the interactions are an integral part of singing music like this - it is all connective tissue that resonates out from within the polyphonic elements - namely - the singers and their conductor.
@monicamurray50903 жыл бұрын
@@vocalchords3609 Let's just say we beg to differ alright. I did say that I enjoyed their musicality and their interaction with the music. They are a wonderful choir. For me, your face and voice can express your oneness with the words and the music, without "throwing shapes" as well. Connective tissue and polyphonic elements? Really? Well. As I said, we can beg to differ.
