Welcome to iTripReport's flight reviews, which I focus on reviewing both the soft product and hard product of airlines around the globe. I strive to give you guys a first person perspective of different aspects of the flight. Including the ground service, onboard service, and those views that come with the flight. As you can see, I record quite a lot of the experience to make sure I record what you want to watch. As always, thank you so much for watching.

0:58 Fun fact about the picture/banner on the tower there. The airport holds an art contest every year for high schools in Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena School districts. They give 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners for each district. 2nd and 3rd place winners get to have their pictures displayed inside the terminal. 1st place winners get to have their picture hung on a big banner on the tower as seen there. Pretty sweet.

This airline has already made a very strong and positive impression on me. I live in Southern California, but I'm from Humboldt County in Northern California. It is a pretty remote location, and the only flight options have historically been United from SFO or LAX...and the prices were in the $600-$800 round trip range for those choices. That, combined with the fact that it is an 11 hour drive, made it hard to see family in Humboldt with any frequency. But I can now fly Avelo round trip from Burbank (which is far superior to LAX in my opinion) for around $120-$150 round trip....so I'm going monthly now. I have now flown them seven times. Every single flight was on time. Every flight was less than $150 round trip (and one trip was under $100 round trip). No baggage issues. Only friendly service at check-in, gate and onboard. Very comfortable seats with plenty of room. Individual air vents (which is a huge deal to me). Very clean bathrooms. This being said, there are no frills. No inflight entertainment. Very basic snack service (cookies and water). But given most of their flights are two hours or less (mainly to small, regional airports from Burbank), I don't care about meal service or entertainment. I can handle those things on my own if the round trip fare is this low. If you've never flown a low cost carrier like this, there are a few things you need to know. First, the base fares are very low (usually $20-$40 per leg), but you will pay extra for seat assignments, checking of bags, etc. Seat assignments generally run $10-$30, checked bags were $20 last time I flew and carry-on bags were $25. So the base fare isn't going to be what you'll actually pay unless you don't opt for a seat assignment (which means you will just take whatever seat they give you at check-in...could be a middle seat in the back or could not be with your travel companion) and don't bring a bag (although you can bring a purse or backpack for free). Second, the whole premise is that they just do the basics well...getting you from A to B safely and economically...don't expect anything more and you'll be thrilled.

I love seeing new airlines come to life! We need more options. Especially when you live 90 minutes from the nearest airport (like I do), but only 5 minutes from a regional airport that could use a service like Avelo or any other ULCC.

Same here, except the fact that HIO doesn't allow for commercial flights unless for a needed diversion from PDX. Considering the size of HIO, and three runways, you'd think commercial would be allowed, but I assume it's due to the proximity of normal residential areas they refuse it.

It's so awesome to have additional options for us locals, but also for people coming in and visiting as we rely heavily on tourism. The word spread pretty fast about Avelo around Sonoma County and I know a lot of people who have already booked tickets.

Great video! Actually good to see that someone is up to providing service to the smaller airports. Regarding runway length, STS is just about the same length as SNA (6000' vs 5700') and they've been going in there with 737-700s and -800s, and 757s for years. At BUR, Runway 15 at 6886' with a 909' displaced threshold for landing (with 5977' available) and Runway 33 with a 350' displaced threshold (leaving 6536' available), isn't all that much longer. Runway 8/26 at 5802', is a little shorter, and with Runway 8 being the only ILS-equipped runway, means that in foggy weather, they would be landing straight-in on Runway 8. For takeoff from STS, might have some weight-restricted flights, but I'm sure that they have figured that into their operation. The 737-700 maybe would be a better fit for the route -- only time will tell.

Thank you for this it is special to me for many reasons! I worked at BUR for 5 years 2005-2009 (TSA Trainer) so great to see the airport here! And hasn’t changed! I miss most the AA MD80’s screaming into the air setting off car alarms! Then I moved to Santa Rosa 2010 and worked security there for 3 years. Back then the runway was not yet extended so we only had AS Q400s, 6-7 flights a day. No TSA there but contractor Trinity Technology Group who is still there and hiring! Santa Rosa/Sonoma County is an incredible place to visit, better yet to live! Ok, love the Avelo livery and colors. Clean and crisp and a big cut above other ulcc. I noticed different winglets on the two jets. Yes the toilet floor looks out of place. I wish them best of luck and sincerely hope they succeed. But they must serve coffee! And should copy AS by allowing a case of wine to fly for free from Santa Rosa. I tell you I screened thousands of cases of wine back then. The GOOD stuff! When you of age I’d be happy to take you to some of the best but less known wineries and breweries, and cheese makers! Love your posts, Qs as well, you guys are the best at it! See you on board some day! Thanks again! 👍👍👍

@jpusar 3 жыл бұрын
@@RLTtizME ...and before that disastrous cost cutting. Seems like Levy is a good airline executive so I think they're smart enough never to go that direction. My concern tho is there's not a whole lot to differentiate themselves. There's already 3 ULCC in the US (4 if you count Sun County) so it's a crowded market and nothing on board seems too different from everyone else. So they'll have to compete entirely on efficiency and route optimization. LA being a hub does make them theoretically different enough to focus on West to Midwest and compete directly with Southwest, but they'll need to have a better fleet vision to help optimize costs than just getting 737s on lease. The routes they cover already seem pretty crowded (West coast has so many airlines) so they'll have to be really lean to make those ultra cheap routes disruptive and profitable.
@TheCriminalViolin
@TheCriminalViolin 3 жыл бұрын
@@jpusar Those three are Allegiant, Spirit & Frontier, right? Also, Sun Country I believe considers themselves a vacation carrier, as that's their entire history and basis for starting up in the first place out of MSP, and is most of their destinations from origin airports (to vacation destinations namely in the US). Kind of like Air Canada's Rouge. So I'd not really consider SC to be ULCC, like I wouldn't Rouge.

When I started my frequent visits to our Santa Rosa field office in 2011, the only option was Alaska/Horizon. Otherwise you had to fly into SFO or OAK and deal with all the horrible North Bay traffic. So many new routes have been added to Charles Schulz Sonoma County Airport in recent years. Although Breeze is on the east coast and Avelo is on the west, it will be interesting to watch these two companies grow and clash with each other. Will one come out victorious over the other? Wow! Interesting seeing a 737 land at Santa Rosa (KSTS). I did my flight training in Davis (KEDU) which is in the same area, and did several cross countries to KSTS. Never did I think something like a 737 would ever land at that airport. The longest runway (14 - 32) is 6000 ft. and on the short-ish side for an aircraft like this. Surely, within the limits, but still kinda "hairy"!
