Quick note here - It is a good fix however, do not seal the new cap in the groove with sealant. The cap is designed to suck air up around the diaphragm on the inside of the cap. If you place sealer in the small space of the cap - as shown - this blocks the air from being pulled into the diaphragm cavity. Place the sealant on the out side of the lip of the extrusion on the valve cover and then snug the new cap over that. Seal with some aluminum tape until the sealant dries or just leave it on. This way there is an air tight seal on the new cap but not on the interior of the new cap - this allows for the diaphragm to breath...NO squealing.

Yes, my 328i convertible 2013 has this happen the other day and the dealership wants just over $2,000 to repair it, about $639 for the part alone, and I found a shop that will do it with OEM for $1,083. Not sure if this fix is available for my motor. If it ever happens again I will look into it deeper. But thanks for sharing this anyway. Only BMW could turn a 20-30 dollar part into a $2,000 repair! Like the hall sensor that went out in August, a $25 part, but integrated into the hydraulic ram that raises and lowers the top, so the whole thing had to be replaced at more than $2,000 and towing of $485. My third BMW 328i and the first one with any repairs needed. Any more like this one and I will have to live in the damned thing.

I did mine PCV replacement immediately after I drove the car so everything was warm and it was very easy to make a small cut on the side and pull out whole PCV assembly without even tearing it in to pieces. Unfortunately, howling NOISE from the front main seal did NOT go-away. When I started my X5/N55 on idle for about 5 minutes, the noise returned back, while car was ruining and noise was present, I carefully loosen the oil cap and I felt very high vacuum built-up, which was relived by opening Oil Cap and the howling noise was disappeared. After putting back Oil Cap, noise started again. So it is clear that there are many pressure regulating valves/ air ducts in the Oil Cover and some of them may be damaged as well. Before removing faulty PCV, I connected a 1/8 clear rubber tube (30 cm ) and other end slighly dipped in to water cup and I see it sucked water immediately because orange diaphragm of the PCV was broken at many places and also became brittle , after replacing PCV, the water sucking was not observed that means new PCV is not leaking to atmosphere. Noise issue confirmed that there is other pressure regulating hidden valves are faulty and which can not be replaced so my next step is to replace the Valve Cover.
@wadeconner3200
@wadeconner3200 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this tip! - My squeal just started today. I put a tube on the PVC cap hole and yes, can move air thru it. Also, the squeal goes away as soon as I pull the oil filler cap off (lots of vacuum and hard to get off) This tells me that the PVC valve itself is not working and there is too much vacuum in the crank case. I'll try the PVC hack first and if that doesn't fix it, I'll buy a new cover. It sucks though as I just replaced the cover due to an oil leak about 5K miles ago!

I have an E90 N54 (very similar to yours) and an F30 N55 (2014 also) and need to do a valve cover for a diagnosed low pressure (vacuum?) fault along with a few other easier items at the same time. It's more than just replacing the CCV with that top part only. The whole valve cover has vents and air tunnels that get clogged and if not replacing the whole Valve Cover problems will still continue like loud whistling and humming after just replacing the Valve cover gasket only as the whole valve cover with build in CCV should be replaced... Ebay $90 to $140 for complete Valve Cover unit which includes the valve gasket already on it...

Order it from BMW of Medford or Portland Oregon so no sales tax collected. That screaming banshee noise happened with mine the other day and the one repair guy that said he can fix it using after market valve cover also insisted my car has a 4 cylinder turbo. Your education is really excellent and it solves the problem, but my problem is beyond this and the reason is the place where I live and the country where I live, which has a law similar to the law of the jungle. My compatriots trample my fellow countrymen and cause my country to be embargoed, that's why cars and spare parts and all the things people need are very expensive or rare. He found a valve door in the parking lot and the ability to buy a valve door that costs 500 dollars in my country has disrupted my life and I am slowly getting depressed. 😭

Just a tip for people replacing just the pcv valve, make sure you put only small amount of glue on the outside of the housing not on the cap, same spot as per the oem valve. Too much glue will cause the new diaphragm to stick to the new cap which will close the valve and not operate correctly. You will end up hearing the squealing sound again like in this video as the diaphragm can not move freely.

It is great video. I do have the same problem . And I'm 70% fixed the issue by deleting the crank ventilation valve so I only get this noise in hot start not even everytime but cold start no noise at all

I am thinking to do what you did first and if that does not get rid of the noice My mechanic will replace the cover. Any additional advice please. Thank You, your video is helping lots of ppl.

I'm dealing with misfires at the moment, does anyone know if you can get misfires from faulty valve cover/pcv or gasket?

Misfires tend to deal with spark plugs and/or coils.

The BMW or any car for that matter can misfire if is sucking in to much or not enough air. Most vehicles have a 14 to 1 ratio and if its getting to little it can mess with that..

@@maximedenomme838 how did you remove the Cover from a n52 ?
@maximedenomme838
@maximedenomme838 4 жыл бұрын
@@marvintorwesten8508 used a rotary tool, i.e. Dremel, and a small pick or chisel to remove any leftover from the glued old cap. Just take your time and work slowly. KZbin has plenty of video about that. Just search for pcv. BMW. Just to be clear, you do not need to remove the engine valve cover, only the pcv cap.

I replaced the round pcv valve on my 2011 328i N52 I was very careful to do it correctly as possible but it started to act up again in a few days. It ran ok but started to make noise and a lot of suction from the oil cap. I felt there was no other alternative to but to replace the entire valve cover. I have a BMW motorcycle which I love. but I will sell this car an never go to BMW cars again Too much trouble in other areas as well.

Yes, and do not perform this "repair" shown here it will not hold. Even though people will say buy an OEM valve cover that is bull!! An aftermarket valve cover is just as good, or in the case of BMW OEM valve cover JUST AS BAD! but 1/4th the price. eBay has many for around 100 bucks including gasket.
@MrLaloman18
@MrLaloman18 5 жыл бұрын
It's more than just replacing the CCV with that top part only as shown on this video. The whole valve cover has vents and air tunnels that get clogged and if not replacing the whole Valve Cover, problems will still continue like loud whistling and humming and rough idling on cold starts after just replacing the Valve cover gasket only as the whole valve cover with build in CCV should be replaced... Ebay $90 to $140 for complete Valve Cover unit which includes the valve gasket already on it... BMW OEM brand is just another rip-off like FCP Euro's overpriced Valve Covers as well! Amazing tip: Soak the "valve cover gasket" that comes with the whole unit un 303 Aerospace protectant solution (PepBoys & amazon has it) for a whole day prior to installing and that gasket will last a lifetime as the 303 will penetrate into the rubber and will prevent that gasket from drying and cracking in the future! Amazing for everything rubber/elastic etc....
