"It makes me sad, but it also makes me happy." The best music does, and often, like with this song, it's hard to even understand why.

The story describes two lovers whose souls are boumd throughout space and time. Sometimes their love wins and they spend their lives together, sometimes it doesn't. But they connected regardless, and constantly finding each other no matter the forms they time or their place in spacetime (roses, grains of sand, prehistoric times, ancient eygpt, in the rings of saturn as space dust). It's such a beautiful song

The slow part with piano + drums was the Rev's thing. They haven't had a section like that since 'Nightmare' which was the last album the Rev was on. It's almost like accepting the reality of death as a part of life.

I always thought Cosmic takes the perspective of a dying person reassuring their lover that death will not separate them forever, and they will find each other and be together again in the afterlife

I like that interpretation.

Out of all the masterpieces Avenged Sevenfold wrote, Cosmic is up there in number #1. This song is just... I don't even have the words.

So sorry about your loss, Nikki. I'm glad this song spoke to you. I tear up every time I listen to it. I think it can be about relationships in general, be it romantic, parental, platonic. It's about finding love, losing it, but knowing you'll find them once again in many lifetimes. Love this song. Thanks for the reaction!

This whole album was just crazy timing for me. Not only did I fall in love with it last summer, and was lucky enough to actually be at the second show of their tour in CT(the one Sin hurt his leg.. I actually got it on film), he played the rest of the show sitting down in a chair like a boss. But, the love of my life also fell in love with the music as well. I can tell you there aren't many things in life that make me more happy than to share something like that with the most important person in your life. That album came out last summer I believe... unfortunately, my beautiful, perfect soul mate passed this past April 2024 from heart failure. She was born with a bad heart, and made it to 33 years. Sharing this music together will forever connect me to the music... there's no way I won't think of her anytime I have a listen. God bless you Ally...

he flipped it at the end because of INFINITY. Too me this song is about the wheel of time, and the infinite cosmos, but that is just one of many things that this song brings up for me. I think many of the same things as you did "Love, love so many times And in so many lives Sometimes we got it right Pain, it found it's way back in Until we meet again, into that good night None too far as we chase through the stars beyond forever I'll follow you"

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. The loss of a loved one will always never be easy. I in fact lost my sister the fall before your dad passed (November 2015). It has torn my family up and still is. It’s a pain that you have to bear with the rest of your life. To tell my future kids one day, and I don’t know how I would even begin to explain it to them. Explain death, afterlife and the life with God. This is my favorite song they have ever written in their entire discography. Bar none. Another thing that tears me up is the movie interstellar. How, “Murph’s ghost” was her dad the whole time in their house. How gravity made an anomaly in Morse code, in their house, that said “STAY.” Then eventually 124 years later and falling into a black hole, he was communicating through Murph’s memories. This movie ironically, ties in with this song. It’s so beautiful but it rips me shreds. I don’t think I will ever not think about this movie whenever I hear this song. I too call my sister “My ghost” as well. This song just hits me every time on the ascending cord, or the reaper dancing at the sunset. It’s just a reminder to me, that this life here on earth is so beautiful, and so precious, to not waste a single minute of. Hold on to your loved ones while you still have them and make all the memories you can with them. All of it, is entirely too precious.

I take it as it’s death being happy to do its job and the excitement it brings/joy to bring someone to the afterlife then patiently flips the timer for the next person

The video was created by someone else, a year after the song was written. So, even though the creator probably consulted the band, the actual song is more about death, and cycles of life, rather than the actual Grim Reaper. Matt has said the lyrics are sung from the point of view of someone about to pass away, and he is reassuring his lover that they will be together again. Via reincarnation or similar means, that they have mingled, and will continue to mingle, throughout time. The final lyric is "I'm gone!", but as the lyrics describe, rather than sadness being the overriding emotion, one feels rebirth and transcendence, neverending love of a couple (but could be applied to any pair with deep love for each other like father-daughter).

It’s a great A7x song, very different from their usual songs, quite an emotional song that can invoke strong emotions. Yeah, your interpretation is good, you very rarely miss anything! I think Scream (live in LBC) would be a great follow up! Edit: great that you’re doing The Hu and Lzzy Hale as well, kudos!
