I’ve been listening to Rock/Metal for about 24 years now. But I’m black and come from a neighborhood where it’s usually looked down upon or talked about if you listen to that type of music. So, I had to hide the fact that I loved Rock/Metal music growing up. And Linkin Park and Slipknot were my two favorite bands growing up. But one day my ex introduced me to this band called Avenged Sevenfold. And after that it was history! I literally started playing guitar because of Unholy Confessions. I’ve been playing guitar now for about 13-14 years because of A7X. But when the Rev died it really did hurt me because A7X was the band that made me ok with listening to Rock out in the open. And on top of that A7X was the first ever Rock/Metal concert that I had ever been to! It was A7X along with Papa Roach.

There was a Golden Time in the late 80s early 90s before Gangsta Rap and the Riots where we were all gettin along good and diggin music together and shit like Living Color's Cult of Personality was heavy on Mtv and Radio and People were Diggin it... Sad how all thats changed, used to have some Epic Times with 'The Bruthas' who back then were all Smart, Upward lookin Guys, who were into Being Educated and not thinking bein stupid and bein trash was cool. Back when we could all hang out in a Club and joke each other about our Different crazy Cultural shit and nobody got mad, cos we could all laugh at ourselves and our own shit, and not joke out of meanness but out of Brotherhood, cos we all have a lot more in common than we have different, Facts. Hope those times come back someday, I haven't given up Hope yet. Stay Strong and BE YOU. And Fuck the Haters....

I’m Latino who was born in Texas in the 80’s. Your story sounds so similar to mine except I was hiding rap tapes lol. Just like Em said, I was hiding these records like bad report cards. But I’ve been a drummer ever since I could remember, my dad is a drummer to. Korn and A7X were those bands that showed me I was on track with where I knew I felt at home, a great mix of lyricism and some funkyAce groves lol. I’m glad you did too brother.

I'm glad you shared here and that your persevered. I'm white, I'm sure you'd have guessed, and have only a few "black" friends, in quotations because it's not a factor behind the friendship but is noteworthy considering your story, but none of them into metal. For them metal is "white" people stuff and on the few occasions a white or black distinction issue comes up ,metal music is associated with white racism against black people. So to read your fandom for metal music as music first and not as a kind of covert political belief , I kinda wish my friends of a different back ground to mine would be like you in enjoying this music for what it really is and not conflating it with external factors or movements. I like my friends no matter what culture but sometimes I wish I could share the common interest without the political pollution. You prove that is possible with your view on the music and not the culture it came from or supposedly represents. We both love this music and that's the common worth noting

it was all part of a ritual, how do you think hits are created? its all demonically influenced, if they would have rehabed Jimmy we wouldnt have Nightmare as it is today, music is heavily influenced by the unconscious realm, emotions, drugs, all play part in the creative process. Even the demons inside Jimmy knew he was gonna die, if you listen to song called Fiction you can clearly see it was like a goodbye song. And it was the last song they created together before he died.

Which back then I liked their music, but I didn't know many songs besides singles. Fast fwd some years and one night I decided to sit down and listen to their entire catalog. One ominous fact about the Revs passing is that he was quoting as constantly saying that he'd never live past thirty. Also the song Brompton cocktail on the self titled album describes somebody taking their life with the same thing that the Rev passed away from, a blend of both drugs and alchohol.

I wasn"r really into A7X until my son who was around 15, had me listen to Live in the BBC with him the night he bought the CD. I dunno what it was, but by time it was over, I was definately a BIG fan. As matter of fact, it's the album that caused me to pull out my old bass guitar, "freshen" up and start playing again. I then really started listening to the drum tracks and ended up signing up for drum lessons with legendary drum instructor John Bletch of the band Frostbit Blue. I became proficient and have been drumming t ok Avenged Sevenfold since. The Rev was the best, that's a fact!

I don't hear the flavor of their style in Avenged's musical gumbo as clearly as the other two. But I feel like Metallica is kind of like Black Sabbath in that way. It can generally be assumed that pretty much anything that was released after a certain point has been influenced by them, whether directly or indirectly. But mostly directly. Personally, I came to realize that I'd practiced way too much Metallica in my earlier days of playing guitar, and it took me years to rehabilitate myself to a point where everything I tried to do wasn't reminiscent of their sound in one way or another.

Depending on if you are into superheavy death metal (go earlier in their music), if you like a mix of modern heavy rock /metal in a modern concept album thematic approach try out "The Stage". "Nightmare" is probably their consistently excellent album across all the songs. They have a new album coming in 2023 believe

So many scary things of note leading up to his death. He knew 2 things for sure from a very young age: he'd grow up to be in a famous band, and he wouldnt live to see 30. Fast forward to Self-Titled, Jimmy writes (and performs vocals for) a song called "Brompton Cocktail," which is a (commonly) lethal combination of alcohol and medication, which, as we all know, was how Jimmy passed. What's super eerie is if you listen to "Brompton Cocktail" and "Fiction" back to back, it sounds like a 2-part suicide note. Almost like he planned and told us how he'd go out before saying his goodbyes on the next album. And sure, the connection between the 2 tracks has never been confirmed, but that'd be a very hard and dark topic to dive into so I'm not surprised the band hasn't confirmed or denied. RIP Jimmy. We Love You foREVer ❤

Ever since I started listening to A7X over 10 years ago, I was aware Jimmy died before the release of Nightmare. But I never noticed the REV in 'forever' being slightly larger than the rest of the text

This has been my favorite band for a long a$$ time!! When I started listening to them, Around 2001 when my husband's band opened up for them in Chicago at the metro. no one knew who they were. I knew they were going to be huge. I remember the day that Jimmy died. I was so sad and heartbroken for all of them. Way too young. But, I am so glad that they continued on. I've seen them now 11 times and counting. I will always love this band, and I will always support them.

You failed to mention he was born with an enlarged heart that affected his life expectancy. His voice was going towards the end and he was heavily self medicating.

Fiction is a flat out gorgeous song, I remember when album launched I hadn't heard about Rev, and wondered about who was singing the 2nd part with M. Shadows and the prayer-like quality. When I heard it hit me like a ton of bricks

Thank you so much for this video,i started listening Avenged Sevenfold a few years back and I knew that the Rev died in 2009 but yesterday i bought the album "nightmare",today i started listening to it with a friend in his car and i loved it,but when i wanted to put the cd back in the case i saw the image under the cd holder with R.I.P. Jimmy the REV and then i took out the lyrics book from the front and i read the last pages that were about him and then i wanted to know his story, and after hearing what you said about the song "fiction" i went to that page and i saw that some parts are written with red instead of white...now i just want to cry...

Justin Sane from Anti-Flag was never in Suburban Legends, Avenged Sevenfold or Pinkly Smooth. He's one of the founders of Anti-Flag and has only ever played with his band. It's a different guy going by Justin Sane.

I still remember the night I found out he passed. It was I believe around 11 pm and ironically, I was watching this show on Fuse called Loaded, and it was the A7X episode. The Bat Country video was playing when I had gotten a text from my friend telling me he passed. I told him to stop lying, but he told me to go check online. When I read the official statement, my heart broke. I had an opportunity to go see them the year before, but knew my dad wouldn't let me go to a concert on a school night. I did get to see them at Uproar in 2010, and it was bittersweet. I had discovered the band in late 2006 when I was 16, and that band saved my life. When he passed, it felt like I lost my older brother or best friend. He was hilarious, an amazing drummer, and I loved his voice and the "double ride" thing he did on Almost Easy. It's been 13 years since his passing, but I think of him everyday. And as corny as it sounds, I'm no longer scared of thunder because I think it's just him drumming. We love and miss you so fucking much Jimmy

You forgot to mention that Jimmy was born with an enlarged heart that caused him issues throughout his life. Im sure the drugs didnt help that problem but thats why he lived his life to the fullest, because he knew he wasnt going to be here for a long time. He didnt want to suffer and be on medications/in and out of the hospital so he did what he felt was best for him by self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. The line in Brompton Cocktail sums it up "i wanna leave how i arrived, so alive." I think it's absolutely heartbreaking and is such a tragic loss that is still felt by his family, friends and fans but i pray and believe that now he's at peace and livin it up in heaven with all the greats that we've lost. Love ya Jimmy, foREVer ❤

Great band! I think they were probably the only band in the crop of 90's metal bands that have explored as much territory in metal, hard rock, and alternative rock. No album sounds quite like the one before it, and in a good way. It would have been interesting to see what direction they would have taken after Nightmare had the Rev lived to write more music.
