At this time (2005-2007) Matt, in live performances, used to constantly change the intonation during a song. He did it on practically every line of the song, which makes him very unique in his style. Although I really like that style, in some songs I think he did it too much. Between 2008-2011 he moderated that style a bit but still maintained it. I think he found the perfect balance here. From there his way of singing the songs live tended to, I don't know how to say it, to be more linear. He doesnt make as many changes in intonation or at least not as abrupt as at the time of this video. I don't know how to speak technically to define a vocal style but I think you understand what I mean. This is just my opinion

This was such an amazing performance from Matt and really shows him at the beginning of his prime. More than anything, what made him a great vocalist is what he didn't do. You'll probably notice on relistens that he didn't sing the really high FEEL YOUR WORLD KEEP DYING and NO MORE USE IN TRYING parts and went for the parts that he could manage more reasonably. You wouldn't even guess from the tonal variation, power, and control here that anything would be hard for him, but that's because he had such a great instinct for where he should and shouldn't exert himself. He could manage the entire Cities of Evil tour because he was economic about vocal delivery. He was also definitely great at improvisation, and he was able to do a lot with those different registers. Of any Avenged Sevenfold song, this is the most like a Guns N' Roses song vocally. Axl Rose used and still uses a ton of these dynamics. Matt wanted to capture both Axl and Chris Cornell in his style when he started training with Ron Anderson before City of Evil, and he definitely accomplished that, moreso Axl back then, and moreso Chris in the recent work. He was able to blend the nasal with the grit most easily from 2005 to 2007. They became more separate from 2008 to 2012 and he put emphasis on pure compression. City of Evil songs sound best to me in the old style with the rawness and quirkiness and all that nasally goodness. They haven't done this song live since 2007, probably because it has so many lyrics to remember and it's so vocally demanding and it's not that popular with newer fans. It would have been a good deep cut to resurrect if A7X were able to tour this year and throw some City of Evil songs into the live set for the 15th anniversary. What could have been.

Saw a comment about 2006 Rock am ring, eternal rest is like this song, just different parts after different parts, awesome reaction super glad you like this!

Matt reminds me a lot of Axl Rose. Cool reaction as always! Can I suggest you go way way back to when Avenged Sevenfold did Warped Tour in 2003. Specifically We Come Out At Night Live At Warped Tour 2003. This is when I was put onto them from my best friend. Good memories with this song. It's heavy AF. Absolute potato video quality tho lol AND I believe you'll be happy with the crowd in that video haha

Probably in my top 10 of the band. This is just an opinion of me, but this is their most underrated song. I could think of many as Save Me, but this one usually has the title of best song by the fans.

Save Me has the bias on it from these factors: It's over 10 minutes long It's the last track on Nightmare It's about Jimmy and has a vocal from him on it Most people probably won't admit they're impressionable, but like with I Won't See You Tonight and Exist, there are traits in Save Me that people notice and immediately latch onto that aren't about the music. They go for the story and details that they associate with certain things to form their favoritism. They're more inclined to call those songs masterpieces as opposed to extremely effective shorter songs that don't take as much time to make their mark. This song doesn't have those factors. I'd consider it a masterpiece. All of these songs are exceptional, but Trashed and Scattered rightly deserves to be considered underrated.

The song I view as most underrated is Shattered by Broken Dreams, which, ironically considering my previous point, is the last and longest track on Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. Its only disadvantages are being on the least popular album and not being Rapture, Warmness, or Streets.

@@chrismeadows4216 save me is at least in the top 10 but my favorite song of theirs has to be crossroads, the lyrics just hit super close to home for me cause it really sums up how I feel about life

Unfortunately they rarely play this song any more.. This live was in a period when Matt's vocals were super raspy, i recommend anything from 2006 rock am ring live especially "walk" or "burn it down". He uses this vocal style there !!

@@yolosykes the audio does truly suck, and it's probably best for the songs she hasn't heard that she does the studio versions before either. Walk absolutely should be the studio version.

The Graspop version of Burn it Down is pretty great, but missing the 3rd guitar harmony. Sounds weird.

I know this much, with some of the inflections in Matts voice, he could easily and convincingly perform a set with G & R. Getting back to what's real. This was well chosen to be reacted to here, part of what I'm sure was a night out to remember. I feel that with like many other rock groups, this was far better than the studio recording. I'm starting to think that "live" rock should be rebranded "alive", as it's far more appropriate. I have to 100% agree that the forced pausing detracts from the over all pleasure of the moment. Loved it.
