It is just to get a direction how it should be sung on the final take (same with buried alive or other demos, the rev also did this part on other demos like buried alive or nightmare I think)

@@ExternusArmy That's cause there are no lyrics. Matt is just mumbling. The whole point of a demo is just to get a rough draft of the song. Lyrics are the last step. If you listen to metallica demos, James is just saying "dananananana" the whole time

He did demos of every song on the album before he passed including this one even though I think I remember hearing that he didn't actually have much involvement in writing it obviously besides his drum parts that Mike Portnoy of course later ended up playing with some modifications after his death. There's even a demo of Lost It All with his parts and vocals on it and probably also one of 4:00 AM somewhere too, but that stuff has kinda remained hidden for a long time since I'm sure it's still hard for the band to hear demos from Nightmare with him on it given how sudden and untimely his passing was
