Avengers Endgame called Back to the Future's time travel logic "bulls***." But was that fair, or does Back to the Future actually do a better job with time travel fiction than the Marvel Cinematic Universe's epic time adventure?

The Time Heist of Avengers Endgame was made possible through several Avengers combining their unique knowledge: Iron Man Tony Stark experimenting with a hypothetical Mobius strip; Ant-Man Scott Lang's accidental trip through the Quantum Realm; Hulk Bruce Banner fidgeting with the quantum tunnel tech; and the Ancient One using her magic to clarify the nature of split timelines. While planning this time heist, Scott Lang and Rhodey mock the time travel logic of movies like Back to the Future. But looking back at the 1985 time travel classic, how does Doc Brown's incomplete time travel explanation compare to the plot holes of Avengers Endgame? Erik Voss compares two of his all-time favorite films -- Avengers Endgame (2019) and Back to the Future (1985) -- to determine which is the worthier narrative with satisfying, climactic, and dramatically consequential time travel plot mechanics.

The video is also laughably confused. Dr. Strange's time travel is due to the time stone - not specifically via magic. The Infinity Stones command all of existence. They are all of science and all of magic and more. Film just goes over Erik's head. He prefers BTTF because it's written at a 9 year old level.

I’ve been saying this ever since Endgame. The time travel stuff is a bit messy, but you forgive it because I love the story that the movie is telling with them and those characters so much that I’ll forgive the flaws in its time travel rules. Also, so many great moments payed off from the 22 previous films.

It's not that messy just think of time as tree With the mcu timeline as the main trunk, with the changes when they went back in time being branches of that tree, and then they use the quantum realm to jump from each branch to and from the trunk

The battle wasn't pointless, it was a repercussion; The Avengers were on the defense. However, because they decided to return the stones to their origin points, it doesn't matter when they are returned or how long the stones stay in the "future." They could go all the way to the end of time, as long as they eventually make it back to the point in the timeline where they were taken. They didn't need to return them to their origin points then, they just needed to keep them under their control, away from Thanos. The _tactically_ prudent move would be to complete the contract by returning the stones, but not necessary for the timeline continuity. But all this in itself is a misnomer of how they themselves state time works... if your past must become your future, then the stones can never be returned to the timeline that they were removed from, because time travel isn't possible, just parallel movement between different timelines which are out of sync. Time always moves forward, as it is the byproduct of the expansion of the universe (maybe). However infinite parallel timelines exist, where everything is exactly the same, just a few (or more than a few) moments, ahead or behind (because multiverse). Reality is a leaf on a stream. If we can figure out how to pick it up and move it (not likely because we are stuck inside of it) backwards on the stream, it probably would not follow the same exact path it had before, and even if it did, the "water molecules" it is moving on would be wholly different.

*Because once we’re done with the stones, we can return each one to its own timeline. At the moment it was taken. So chronologically, in that reality, the stone never left.* - Professor Hulk. This is the most *important* line of dialogue explaining time travel in the film. The Professor Hulk time-dialogue was written by and speaks for the Quantum Physicists in the film. Understand the above, and you will get the film's time travel.... If you don't...... A forum discussant writes: "It would not be the same time as when he took it." Yes.... *It would be that exactly.* The logic of time in that reality would be that the stone was taken and returned [instantaneously]..... *DEFINED* -> "the point of time now present or present with reference to some action or event." It does not matter if in an *alternate reality* you take the stones *TO* the stones are gone for 1 minute, 1 year, or.....1 billion years. [does not cause 1 microsecond to pass in the reality where you took the stones *FROM* ] This is what you need to understand about time. Time within a reality is relative. [reality - relative the two words express same concept] Time in different realities is independent. Given the possibility of travel between realities time is *chaotic.* [this is what Scott conveys about the Quantum Realm] If you can control the chaos - then you have - *a multiverse time machine.* Hope his helps.

I think Endgame explained Time Travel quite well. It needed to use Time Travel as a plot device so they had to use it in a way that makes sense and in that regard the movie did a good job. Although still theoretical (i guess, coz lets face it time travel exists in the future then it exists now and existed in the past too), there are multiple theories on Time Travel and Endgame happens to use the theory that is not that commonly used in movies. But then again Endgame was not about Time Travel. It was about the climactic final battle all along, which they spectacularly got it spot-on. So naturally Endgame will obviously never be a good time travel movie on the levels of the gems of the genre like Primer and Dark (TV Series).

Make time travel believable?.... well that would make sense.... if you could actually prove more than one universe... and that one universe would need to be almost identical, and quantum mechanics don't exist... Endgame is some of the hardest to understand, worst written sloppy time travel I have seen on film. Wanna make time travel believable in film? Than we should base it in our real world understandings of space and time, not imaginary multiverses.. Or even follow the comic book logic when it comes to the time travel. Source material or real world rules.

Using the grandfather paradox is not a smart example for you to discredit Bttf hypothesis, when Endgame had hundreds of paradoxes going on. I feel the Avengers rush against time itself is much more evident in Infinity War in their effort to beat Thanos before he collected all six stones (which they lost, obviously); so therefore, there really wasn’t a need to redo that in Endgame. However, the time travel concept was needed in order to “avenge” what happened and that’s why The Russo Bros and M&M wrote it in (and I’m sure KF pushed them to do so also). I also think the theoretical physics behind the MCU multiverse is much better explained than in BTTF, especially in that scene with Dr Banner and the Ancient One, but I’m no physicist by any means. Time travel can't create paradoxes that will end all of reality that we can fix by "correcting things" our very entry into a previous timeline has a butterfly effect of now having an extra person there that shouldn't be. So either our going back can't possibly destroy everything (and likely creates a separate time line) or time travel will never exist thereby ensuring that nothing get's destroyed.

It took this, and another video showing me that Back to the Future, while good, is not perfect in its execution of time travel, for me to get over the small details and just enjoy films with different time travel mechanics. Thank you, Erik.

All of this is based on the thought that we know what time actually is... if time is a universal fact than time started moment of the big bang. Since we don't know the exact moment the universe was created we raally dont know how to reference what date to go back to... therefore you would first need to make a device that starts capturing "time" so you have a reference point at which you can go back to. Or go back to any point after the device was turned on.

Assuming that Steve Rodgers at the end of the movie waited through time to get to that exact moment... doesn't that contradict Hulk's explanation of time travel? Changing the past doesn't change the future because traveling to another timeline is like traveling to an alternate dimension. Yet somehow Steve Rodgers managed to wait an entire century to get into that spot supposedly in the same timelime even though by Hulk's logic he should be in another timeline. I have a really good question about the MCU. I was rewatching doctor strange last night and I saw that they could do a mirror world trick. @summertyme5748

It's called the mirror dimension and if you remember - he *tried this* in Infinity War. Thanos smashed the mirror dimension with the power stone, transformed it into a black hole with the reality stones, and tossed it back at Dr Strange with the space stone. Most of the fan fictions people want to be 'strategy' in Infinity War and Endgame *do not work, and were shown not to work* but again this film is at post high school level, you have to pay attention. This is a perfect example because the question you ask was directly answered in the film...you just missed it.

Totally agree, Back to the Future’s time explanation is better, more logical and basic physics! The only error Back to the Future had is in part 2, was when old Biff travelled to the past giving himself the sports almanac in 1955, when returning to the future he would have returned to the alternate future of 2015 not the same future Marty and Doc were in trying to save Marty’s son! Still the Best time travel movie created thus far in my opinion!

Tusmoove K: I was literally looking for a comment like yours. The only possible explanation is that the intervention of Marty and Doc in the timeline occurred after Biff gave the almanac to his younger self, which means that Biff would arrive back in 2015 in a timeline similar to the one he left. But this seems shaky somehow. In the first Back to the Future movie, Marty's reappearance in 1985 should have found him in a totally different circumstance than Doc having been shot by the Libyan terrorists. Traveling from 1985 to 1955 and giving Doc his own future research on time travel should have meant that Doc actually built his time machine years before 1985. Doc's entire life after 1955 should have been different. The only way Doc could have still ended up in that mall parking lot would have been for Marty to specifically explain every single detail of how it happened and for Doc to execute it all the same way (even to the point of Doc going through the motions of explaining the DeLorean and how it worked to Marty), which Doc probably would have done to preserve the timeline. But for Doc overall, keeping the discipline to not build the DeLorean for 30 years would be quite a challenge.

Again, what Erik misses is that in BTTF 1 - there is a single timeline. *This doesn't work.* Then in BTTF 2 they changed it to multiple timelines: *Like Endgame.* So BTTF is trapped in contradiction like Terminator and X-Men because the original time travel idea - doesn't hold water, and the sequels then screw up the original. lol Note: The word *timeline* is never spoken in BTTF. Then in BTTF 2: Doc Brown: "Prior to this point in time... (He points to 1985) ...somewhere in the past, the *timeline* skewed into this tangent, creating an alternate 1985" 🤣 If Erik were A) Honest and B) Smart He would accept that this answers the question of which film *gets it right.*

But what about the other Marty that went back. He experiences the same things again and comes back to the exact moment we see at the end of movie and that Marty sees himself going back to the past. Yes. The video makes a dumb mistake by equating Dr. Strange use of the time stone with magic. It's the Infinity Stone that time travels - Dr. Strange just uses it. Everything Dr. Strange does Thanos also does - once he has the time stone. The Infinity stones are beyond magic and science. *They encompass everything* - hence the word Infinity.

The Time Machine dislpays the best visual and probable time travel adaption. The Space Time Continuum ( River of Time ) is a constant in the universe. Days of Future Past shows how it should work THEORETICALLY, if you're talking about projection of Aetheral Form through the timeline.
