I know, right? Feel like I'm starting to get a reputation for blasting script writers, from any Asian country, for the obvious "poor self esteem men must have to constantly demean a woman they're 'attracted' to, like five year olds in grade one (whacks girl over the head with a toy car and runs away laughing) mentality". And don't get me started on some C-dramas where she's portrayed as this super high powered exec who can't walk in high heels and gets conned by male lead business rival because, basically, apparently, men fundamentally believe women must be dumb as paint to like them anyway (and they're right at that!) The arrogance instantly annoys me. One of our hero male leads actually made a "GUN" shape out of his hand and pointed it at the female lead's temple - unrelated to anything I could make out in the dialogue.... I'm like...what the actual heck? and stopped watching it entirely.

And tend to drift into thinking how good this drama could be if they simply get some advice from a normal logical person when writing the script… I feel so sad that they waste all that resources, good actors and money on crappy writing 😶

I actually chatted with my friends (male and female) about how the male protagonist/love interest in this drama really stands out as such a “normal” well-mannered and well-educated guy who is polite to everyone, often says "thank you" and "my apologies", doesn't habitually call the female protagonist "dummy" "stupid" etc. just because he is (or thinks he is) more intelligent and educated, and doesn't aggressively flirt or harrass the female protagonist unlike many MANY other male love interests in other C-dramas and Asian dramas in general. I think because this is a detective/crime/political drama, it has attracted a lot more male audiences than those purely romance dramas. Almost all my male friends have watched it and enjoyed it very much. They didn't mind the "female perspective" at all and really appreciated that this drama portrays a "nice guy" as the love interest, instead of the typical arrogant bratty guy who always defeats the nicer second lead and gets the girl because (at least in my male friends' opinion) he has enough $$$$$ and resources to do a bunch of extravagant romantic things to swoon her, as well as being extremely handsome, charismatic, and has six packs. In fact, a lot of guys I know were very confused and frustrated by the extreme popularity of *toxic* male characters in romance stories such as Christian Grey. I'm glad that there are more and more C-drama male characters who are far better role models for the new generations of boys and young men who are not able to, or just unwilling to, become someone like the traditional male love interests whose charisma is usually centred around their appearance and wealth (and even vampire and werewolf superpowers...) and who usually fall in love with the female protagonist because she is conventionally beautiful, petite, and a bit foolish so they can derive "manly" pride from constantly helping her and teaching her to do the most basic things - almost like a creepy father-daughter or teacher-student relationship. The male love interest in this drama is still very idealised, but I think this type of idealisation is much healthier and more inspirational to young men everywhere, compared to the Edward Cullen / Christian Grey types who would just make the average guys go: "Oh so I don't sparkle under the sun, I can't physically block a car to save my girl, I'm not overprotective to the point of following the girl I like everywhere and breaking into her house to watch her sleep, I'm not a billionaire and probably never will be, and I'm not into beating my girl with a baseball bat in the bedroom, so I guess I'm just doomed to be the 'sad second male lead' for life **sigh** "

Yes! The male lead is so emotionally healthy and normal and has good manners. He's not toxic (hate it when toxic chauvinistic male characters are romanticised in dramas), is professionally responsible and constantly respectful of the female lead. Such a breath of fresh air.

Husband and I finished binging this last night. I started it based on your first video, got halfway through the first episode when the husband wandered in. The husband who does not watch Chinese Drama and has giving my new viewing habit a bit of a side eye. He sat down for a moment, watched the rest of the episode and said, "Would you mind rewatching from the start?" So he got sucked in. For us, it was a delight, and we're planning to rewatch at a slower pace because I know there's stuff we missed because of subtitle reading, cultural things we don't understand, and the sheer denseness of how much is important to the overall plot. (I'm also dragging this morning because we stayed up late to finish, something I haven't done in a while.) But this was a joy and thank you for doing the first video, because I might not have noticed this otherwise.

Such a fantastic drama! I actually felt emotional watching this because I’ve never seen a Chinese drama where characters actually sit down to talk to each other on equal terms about their work, relationship, plot stuff. The main cast trust each other and want to help each other without jealousy and misunderstanding! It’s SO refreshing! I did feel like the last 2 episodes and ending was super rushed but I honestly forgave that as well. Even though Eunuch Qin was written a bit comically, the actor is fantastic and chewed up the scenes! I agree with you that it doesn’t have that rewatchability hook factor but I might pop back much later to see if I like the drama the second time. Anyway, Imperial Coroner and Word of Honor has been the two best 2021 dramas I’ve watched so far!

But yeah, the production cost of both dramas is a problem. I kinda hope imperial coroner has season 2 where they explore more about the others love story and how Prince An/Chuchu navigate their professions as marriage couple.. I think it'll be good story

There are a couple of videos on the net explaining (in Mandarin) some of the little details. Totally makes me feel that I missed so many little details. That scene where everybody was making fun of the fact that EVERYBODY jumped in the water after Chuchu? They weren't jumping in after her, the soldiers jumped in after their general who jumped in after his brother. The soldiers weren't jumping in to save Chuchu, they only jumped after their general did. So many other little details that I'll need to watch more videos about then maybe rewatch the thing.

I love the characters! They are smart, humble, and just overall loveable. I love how the male lead listens and values the female lead's opinions and I just adore how he's not above doing mundane things such as peeling pea pods and washing dishes with the female lead while they just communicate about issues they're dealing with. There's also this endearing innate trust between the 4 leads that was such a pleasure to see. Plus, the eunuch and his obsession with having a mustache was just hilarious.

When the male lead told Chu Chu the reason he didn't want to use their marriage ceremony to let the bad guys be captured was really heartwarming to me. I would probably hear lines such as "are u really sure about this?" "yes" "ok, then that is what we are going to do" that...that will probably be the conversation if it were some other chinese drama. Though in the end, it really did feel kinda rushed, this is a really good drama. Although, for me, it lacks romantic scenes like, idk maybe I have watched too much of "cheesy" chinese dramas or something 😆😆. No toxic behaviors, romantically, like one character fights the male lead for the female lead, no forcing, those kind of stuffs. Overall, its really worth watching, y'all should give it a try 😄

I liked that it didn't have full on romantic scenes. They had moments which were incredibly sweet. Like when they are digging up the body of Chuchu's mom and she gets anxious and scrunches up the prince's clothes. Or near the end in the book room where Chuchu squeezes his face. The cuteness was off the charts.

This drama is soooo good. Actually I have been hooked by the story on so many levels and re-watched it 4 times. There are so many details and clues buried in the script that nothing is an idle line. The romance, the detective work, and just the characters in general are so well crafted that it’s made me laugh and cry and seriously hooked even now.

Thanks for a high rating. This was such a normal drama without filler episodes or unnecessary characters. It keeps moving towards resolving the many mysterious without any distraction and that's such a relief for me as a viewer. The hero doesn't think of himself as too good for chu chu and in fact he admitted that he was not a likable person and chuchu might start liking other guys. Chu chu is not a beauty either but she is so attractive because of her dedication to her work and her kindness.

They are a good match Chu Chu and the prince. The commanderie prince is my ideal man and Chu Chu although not exactly conventionally pretty and who I sometimes find annoying is extremely smart and kind. Love the slow burn romance.Their actions and behaviour towards each other speaks volumes. Who needs passionate kisses.

This was one of the best dramas I watched so far in 2021, hands down. Despite it being a little rushed at the end, what I appreciate the most is the healthy relationship between all the main characters. Can I also mention how good the comedy was. The comedy was actually funny and wasn't forced.

Yes!! The characters are so good! And their relationships to each other are fantastic. They have a bit of fun banter but they respect each other and trust each other. It was a joy to watch them. Two things that really struck me as good writing: 1) when Xiao Jingyu asked Chu Chu again about how she really feels because he felt bad that he pressured her during the cave and he really wanted to let her give her honest thoughts. That part was so wonderful and showed how much he respected her. 2) during the final couple episodes when Xiao Jingyu and Chu Chu were acting out how the doctor died, there was that moment of Xiao Jingyu on top of Chu Chu and I thought it was going to take a romantic turn but then it didn't! That moment was subverted as they just kept going on with the case and trying to figure it out. No awkwardness about what they did. No lingering romantic thoughts about physical intimacy. Just them trying to solve the case. I loved that so much.

I totally agree that this drama stimulated our brain's grey cells into thinking like the detectives and also that it had people behaving normally - without babyish, squeaky voices, girls hating and scheming against each other for the male lead, or unnecessarily clinging to men. Each character knew their place in society and never crossed their boundaries. I hope to see more such dramas. Kudos to the entire production teams and to the scriptwriters

It has got many things that we don't see in many other Chinese dramas the female lead is smart, no jealousy between the leads, no misunderstanding that leads to separation, trust, no hatred between brothers for power. Yes to the normal characters! The bickering between the twins, Leng Yue grandpa actually coming around or the grand princess being a lion mom.. nice. Also the adopted characters are actually loved by their parents, biological and adopted, now thats rare. Only thing that I did not like about this drama was Chu Chus stepbro dreaming of marrying her .. UGH. Come on boy, even if you did know she was adopted, SHE DID NOT and regarded you as her real half brother. Thank you again AvenueX for giving the non-chinese speaking audience background info. I really loved the ending and that she could keep her job as the title says :)

I loved this drama, loved the characters and their relationships, especially to honest love between the ML and FL, the affection ML and 2ML and the two brothers. I agree the villains were too comical, but that didn't spoil the drama for me. The ending was rushed though, and it upset me that we did not see our lovers' wedding and wedding kiss.

This was a great show. I loved how much of a nerd the ml was even though he was handsome. It was nice to see a smart cast and no cross dressing females with tons of makeup. I just wish the end was a tad longer. I would have loved to see a real kiss and maybe a wedding scene. It was awesome though she got her wish in the end. Just too rushed.

I love this drama so much though. There was barely any misunderstanding since everyone listened to each other. I expected Leng Yue to be antagonistic but she was a great support to Chu Chu. I also thought Jing Yi was gonna betray Xiao Jinyu but he didn't. They are all very mature with no petty fights and misunderstandings. My greatest criticism though is that I agree that the villains were weak. By the time they introduced the teacher as the second villain, I was more invested in the autopsies and investigations rather than than him. I really did not care much even with the eunuch since the king obviously was onto him already during the first few episodes and the king, whom I thought was a mere puppet and passive, was kinda useful.

I didn’t know about the scriptwriters though, so it was really interesting to learn how they worked together with the director to produce such a satisfying drama. Like you, I have been "torture" by many drama, so I keep thinking.... "oh no, it wont be long before these 2 friends becomes enemies 😭. Or misundertanding will come between the brother/girls." Sounds promising, I'll put it on my list. I'm starting to see a trend where the unexpectedly good shows tend to have low production quality. On one hand, good for those dramas getting the love even if they don't have all the resources, but still, sad we live in a world where more often than not, all the money goes to the at best mediocre productions. This is a general statement for media tho, not sure how true it is for Chinese dramaland.

Actually reminded me of my experience working in a big company and in a small company. In the small companies you don't have to deal with so many people to get things done. One person is across everything in their area and if you have an idea, you just talk to this person and things get done. In the big company, there's a lot more levels that you have to go through and most of them are the managements who don't actually have the worker-level/execution-level expertise. So they don't really know what's happening on the ground, all they have is metrics measuring profitability based on PAST records. In a collaborative art space like film-making, managements should only accommodate but they're not needed in actual creative process. So investors probably should question, with bigger budget productions, is the money going to where it would produce good work or is it manly going to pay unnecessary greasers?

For me this one totally beats out Word of Honor and probably Untamed because that was just shots of actors looking pretty. This was people being people and straight up storylines. None of those bullshit scenes where its like "look how pretty the female lead is, we are going to do slow-mo, and throw some flowers in there too".

I just finished watching it last night. It was definitely a breath of fresh air on many levels. Thank you for explaining the reason of the off looking dubbing, it makes more sense now. The main couple relationship was great and I found the balance between romance and mystery well done. I also liked the fact that all the main characters could rely on each other without question, there was no power hungry sibling rivalry and no huge betrayal.

After I started watching this drama I knew I was in good hands. As Avenue X points out, there were problems, especially with the production values, however, everything else about this drama more than made up for that. The actors, even down to very minor characters never put a foot wrong in their portrayals. Luan and Mingde were a delight. Luan with his fake beards and moustaches had me laughing out loud. As for Luan's final scenes, he was definitely into bravura emoting! As evil as they tried to make him, he and Mingde were excellent comic relief! They say 'too many cooks spoil the broth', however, the two scriptwriters and the director served up a dish that would have satisfied any emperor! My only regret is that I will be trawling Cdramas to find the four male and female leads in other productions. This certainly deserves a Season 2!

I LOVED this drama bc the characters were not dumbed down. It was very satisfying to see the story played out without all the extra nonsense. I really hope that there is room for a second season although I doubt it. Would love to see the characters again.

When i saw your first video I was really intrigued by the concept and checked it out. I followed it since and really enjoyed catching up with it every weekend. I just just finished it so I could watch your review. I'm also so relieved by how grounded and competent the main leads were, and how consistent and solid the plot was! No dragged on misunderstandings and the romance wove into the main plot in a balanced way. Even the production quality didn't bother me as much, because if its a budget thing, then there's not much that can be helped and for me its a good sign that I was still able to enjoy it despite that. So thank you for that initial video because this was a good series!

I finished watching it yesterday!!! I couldn’t agree more with everything it was said. And yes there’s is no addictive factor, but I would totally follow more episodes just because of the characters. So... cute, lovely, adorable. I’m still in love with the scene that Jing Yi put his leg up to show how nice his fake bruise looks. 🤣🤣🤣

Been waiting for this, thank you AvenueX ❤️ Been rewatching episodes over and over while waiting for the EngSubs.. I have been actually anticipating every episode thinking how the story would unfold hoping it is not crappy as other CDramas I have seen. And yes, even in dramas, people should do what Normal people do hahaha... Why is it so rare to have a well throught of script these days.... Also, I just love the acting... The costumes though not a stand out didn't bother me esp most scenes were in the province.. I would have wanted to see how all characters ended but well hoping for a Season 2 😁 May I just say that the relationship between the brothers is just pleasurable to watch 😍

I’m involved with my third viewing of the Imperial Coroner and it was the first Chinese Historical Drama I have had the pleasure to watch just 5 years ago. I just found out that the Emperor was considered crazy. Didn’t realize that before. I appreciate your review as you too recognize the character and social construct demonstrated.

Thank you for a good review of this drama which I thoroughly enjoyed for the reasons you gave. It was a relief to see the characters as complementing each other rather than silly jealousies and fights. I enjoyed the detective aspect; also agree the antagonists were a bit goofy where they might have been portrayed much darker and mysterious. But all in all, good show!

Just finished this drama and came here. Binge watched it in 3 days and I'm very satisfied with how this turned out. The pacing was just perfect for me. And I love the characterization too and the dynamics of all the different relationships that we get. As for the detective cases part of the story, honestly I liked how it was all integrated into this big conspiracy but one didn't take away from the other. And it was really cool to see them explaining with diagrams. Plus personally I did feel excitement to know how and what was gonna happen now. One major point, it was so refreshing to see a couple who can communicate coz I'm so tired of all the miscommunication leading to misunderstanding trope. Also, this was a complete drama for me like we had romance, we had normal people actually working, we had comedy, we had suspense, we had sad moments too, it had a bit of everything. Overall it really is one of the top dramas I have watched and thoroughly enjoyed from start to end this year.

I’m half way watching this and I think you were right. I think it doesn’t have the WOW factor but still loving this so much. I describe it as an easy watch which is I needed because I always watch intense historical drama. It’s a breath of fresh air. I love that you point out that they actually doing their job especially the leads. I just suddenly realized that it’s really rare to see that in drama land. :) So far and I think I will finish this until tomorrow. There are lots out there that got a WOW factor in the first few episodes but dropped them eventually. Here, it’s a steady watch. It’s a drama that you can enjoy with a hot of coffee and not always giving you headache and stress. Love the drama.

I binge watched this CCD! The only thing that stopped me from watching, was I couldn’t keep my eyelids open. 😊 Wow! Great storyline - detective/suspense genre. Some drama, a little wuxia, light romance, and good humor. Surprisingly, I actually liked the “graphic artist/animation/cartoon” insertions that were used throughout to depict/explain various events. Wonderful acting - the interaction between all cast members was believable and relatable - and at times pleasantly quirky. All the relationships - friends, siblings, parents, mentors, bosses, spouses, puppy-love partners - were realistic and identifiable. The performers DID THEIR THANG! They were all very well-suited for their roles. Some of the edited segments seemed a little choppy…perhaps trying to fit within the time allotments. By episode 35 I was thinking there should be at least 1 or 2 additional episodes to more fully unfold/play-out the relationships. Overall, I actually classify this production as a “feel good” CCD. This gets my highest rating...it’s worth the watch from start to finish!

Do I'm not into detective dramas this is an exemption and it was not a mistake. This is one of the best of the best detective drama that I've seen and finished till the end. I just came across this drama and tried it for the 2 episodes and whalla!!! I got hooked to if and I've been eagerly waiting for more episodes to come. Why is it that most of the very low budget dramas were usually the ones that are considered the gems so I salute the scriptwriters and director . But lets not forget the cast who did well on their acting. The only thing that I don't like on this drama is that they left a lot of scenes hanging or in other words they should have not rush the ending . This is the answer of not having the money to add more episodes. Who knows since this drama was well accepted by the viewers there will be a second season.

When I was watching this drama I saw a lot of comment saying they are glad the writer didn't make the ML perfect and I'm confused. This ML is absolute perfection, and of course very rare in both dramaland and in real life. But he is the absolute embodiment of my dream guy and I bet a lot of women too. Such well-mannered, intelligent, sensible, sensitive and protective male lead. No judgement, just a lot of integrity. I never see him as "cold", just a person who has no patience for hypocritical words or manner. Such a solid, ideal man. If I ever see one I will hang on for dear life.

I watched this drama per your recommendation and OH MY GOSH! FINALLY some intelligent, sensible, down to earth, genuinely nice characters in a C-drama that use their strengths to work together towards beating the bad guy and restoring peace. I agree with everything you said in this final review: I also loved to see women being friends, protecting one other, and working together. Not to mention having characters that respect each other, regardless of their social status or gender! I consider myself "woke," and I still found that if I currently (while I was watching the drama) transported myself into the body of the main lead, I probably wouldn't have treated the female lead as my equal as much as the prince did. That's how great the script is, it made me realize that my current view regarding gender roles is even more tarnished by the patriarchy that I though it was, and that I must work towards being better. I'd like to point out that one thing that you didn't like about it I LOVED, which was how quickly the leads resolved the problems they were in. There is so much hurt, violence, and sadness in our real world, so I prefer my dramas to be as stress-free as possible. As a result, I was so thankful for how fast the leads got themselves out of danger, it made my watching experience a happy one, and I didn't go through as much anxiety as I do when watching other dramas :p. Now I understand why the main lead is basically my ideal man, and it's because he was written by two brilliant women, duh! I'll never forget this drama because the male lead is so perfect, and because the relationships in it were so real and beautiful. I have a half-sister, and I also didn't learn the truth about it until I was an adult, so to see how the prince and his brother loved one another regardless of their parentage truly hit home for me. What a great detective story portrayed beautifully and intelligently, BRAVO! One of the best 2021 dramas, FOR SURE!!! Thank you for recommending it, it was just what I needed to end 2021 on a high note :)!!!

The FL & SFL reminds me of the dynamic b/w Young Blood FL and SFL ..... Leng Yue as Zhao Jian and Chu Chu as Xiao Jing.... I absolutely love how both Young Blood & Imperial Coroner doesn’t dumb down a character.... 2 great idol drama (script wise) as my favourite too.... Imperial Coroner is my best of 2021 so far.... love it so much.... Also, both dramas know how to write a proper impactful female character.... it’s brilliant.... both the dramas have negative aspects but treat characters with respect and team dynamics is very well done.....

Thank you for the review! I enjoyed the drama very much. Its tight budget did not bother me too much, it gave a more realistic aspect to the sets and the characters. I was particularly impressed with the lake scene: all actors looked very natural in the water, and properly wet afterwards (a rare feat in a cdrama). The final showdown was the weakest point of the show.

I really enjoy it when you explain what goes into drama-making. For me, it's super interesting. Also, watching the chief eunuch I noticed that in certain scenes his head was shaking in a subtle manner and I couldn't tell whether it's the actor being old and ill, or it was part of his acting, signalling the character's frustration.
