Yes, the drama was a big investment and it shows. The cast also had also done well to fit in their roles. As for Song Yi’s character doing chores, it was because the Baili family was having a hard time and the servants left. But yes, she has her own money and she can afford to pay the servants but for some reason, the director would not let her do it 😂 I actually have more problem with her acting girlish because she’s supposedly only 18, may be a bit overdone, because in ancient times, women can have 2 kids by the time they are 18 so it’s actually more logical for her to act more mature.

Song Yi's character is the only one I disliked so far in this drama. I agree with your point that she behaves way too childish for her age. Moreover her role doesn't provide any significant meaning to the whole plot. I also have issues with her relationship with Baili Erlang. It feels forced and somehow everyone is making her a victim and Erlang a heartless villain. I agree Yibo's character is a bit eccentric and aloof but then they shouldn't have this whole husband and wife track for his character. That didn't suit his character as per my opinion. His character is more like a Sherlock who is a genius but have issues dealing with people.

Song Yi's character won't automatically know how to or even want to do these chores in a logical setting. She was supposed to move into her husband's house with more than one maid too.

I have a feeling I'm going to hate her. What is this making women so stupid? I guess that is why I'm liking WOH, Untamed, or Guardian. Just less "drama". (LOL pun intended) I grew up around loggers, farmers, and railroaders. Not many women, so I'm sure I'm going to have trouble with any drama with chatty women. Enjoyed Imperial Coroner and Hua Mulan and Ancient Detective.

Women don’t have to do traditionally male roles or clothings to display our strengths. Just be a little patient with her cos after all, she’s a spoiled rich girl.

Well, if you're a very curious genius and an aristocrat son with way too much time and money to get education, you can learn gastronomy, anatomy (an aristocrat influence can open a lot of door), lockpicking (it doesn't take that long to learn, especially locks not nearly as complex as modern ones), and architecture. Genius learn fast and he had at least 10 years of his life to learn. Nowadays there are guys in their 20s who can do electronics, robotics, programming, physics, cooking, drawing, sculpting, singing, playing the guitar, and do fitness all at the same time. But those people are extraordinary so you don't get to meet a lot of them in life.

This drama is all about a huge conspiracy. Its like a puzzle that's slowly been solved. It's not your regular costume drama. Lots of brain cells and patience is needed to enjoy this drama. Excellent acting from the male lead.

One of the positives about this drama is that like a good detective story it makes you guess who is behind the conspiracy (if there is any), how the pieces of information uncovered by our trio fit together and it allows you to follow the investigation step by step, learning a little bit more in each episode. I didn't realise that the behaviour of the two main female characters was unusual given the historical context, interesting point. I don't actually think that Song Yi’s character is a little wife - I think she wanted to avoid the traditional fate of a high born wife and have something a little bit different, more lively and unusual. She's shaping out to be quite determined to enjoy life as well and she's really growing on me.

I had the same take on Song Yi's character - I felt it was more about her actually wanting to win over her husband's affections without wanting to be like or act like the social role she was expected to play. She wanted to marry the man she wanted to marry, she wants to succeed at building a relationship with him despite a lot of pressure from her family to the contrary, she wants to participate in what he does even if he keeps pushing her away and she refuses to accept or interpret things the way others want her to, preferring instead to come to her own conclusions, even when it contradicts her husband (very much not part of little wife syndrome, I'd imagine). Although she can get quite annoying with her constant "Erlang, Erlang, Erlang, Erlang..." I really like her character overall: although she's very sweet and mild mannered, she's also incredibly determined and refuses to give in to others if it goes against what she wants. Go her 💪

@@orchardlea Yes. Thank you for saying that. Some of her behaviour makes sense now since we learned she was abandoned by her father and her brother left as well. As you say she wants to succeed at building a relationship with her husband and after today's episodes (27&28) I don't have doubts anymore that these two can make it as a couple. The very slow development of their relationship rings true and it's been a joy to watch. Go them 😄

Agree with most of what you said. Pros for me 1. Lavish and stylish setting 2. No dubbing. 3. Go pro style camera shooting. 4. Attention to visual details. 5. Pace and politics. 6. Avoid trap of being pedantic giving classical times a certain street vivacity. 7. Ghetto world. 8. Nuanced humor esp interplay bet BLHY and GBZ. What i have bit of probs with (1) too much lyrical style flashback to convince us of GBZ's sense of loss. (2) how HX "switches personality almost" as he pushes the envelop to act out a specific moment... feels a little disjointed although his acting is good. (3) agree on SongYi's social class being at odds with her doing housework. Although being the little wife to BLHY is prob her life ambition. All in, I love this drama because it is absorbing, fast pace and is whipping out a good yarn with spots of humor. As with most good drama, I can readily suspend belief to believe in the story and the characters. To me, some liberties around attires are acceptable. BLHY to me is an interesting person, not just because he is played by WYB although admittedly wyb's own character definitely added to the allure of BLHY. But as a type of person, BLHY for all his initial taciturn "brattiness" is a very likeable and i suspect will flesh out even more. He is supposed to have an eidatic memory, and grew up exposed to knowledge held in the ministry of works which accounts for his knowledge of alchemy and mechanics, etc. On anatomy, I think he was observing coroner GBZ rather than participating. Rest of his other "smart" conclusions at critical moments were logical deductions. And the characterization of BLHY I think will have a very definite place at least in my book in dramaland 2021. Like you, I look forward to the next 20-odd episodes.

Ah thanks for encapsulating so well my own thoughts on the series, except on your 3) of the negatives - I think she's actually very strong-willed: she does what she wants, even if others oppose her, and is very determined to win over her husband's heart and support him. I don't think it's about being a little wife, think it's about being determined to achieve her goal, no matter what.

His father wasn't actually trying to climb up the ladder by marrying baili to liu ran... He didn't care about titles and nobility, he just wanted his son to be safe and be in good hands in case something happened to him (which did), since baili has been spoiled and sheltered all his life by his father Also about him knowing anatomy, he learned about it from gao bingzhu (who's a mortician) when he did an autopsy on his father.

Of course he's going to have a different reaction to seeing his dead father being cut up and examined like that than to some random dead man he didn't care about.

He only saw Gao Bingzhu cut open his father and nothing else. So he can now do autopsy? Nothing is perfect and it’s normal for a drama not to be perfect. Baili was given too much power, it’s for entertainment purpose, not for logic.

(Which I'm surprised she did tbh cuz they're all quite explainable in the drama) We don't know what happened in the scene about bailis father autopsy. We just saw him throw up at some point, it could've been the end of the autopsy. I was definitely put off by the scene where baili magically knew how to replicate the snake lock key just by looking at it. And his explanation of "cuz I'm baili hongyi" didn't do it for me but ehh well.

I watched the first episode and I'm hyped. I never thought that one of the leads is Victoria, i just love her acting. Her built is just perfect as a female valiant warrior. It's just melts my mind when the likes of ju jingyi, rosy zhao and even zhao liying play a female warrior. I just can't get into the character. Wang yibo in here is okay kinda stiff, you can really tell a veteran actor vs not so veteran if they act side by side. Those small gestures actors made will make a big difference.

I agree with you about BGM. Especially the scenes of lossing Baili’s father, wyb expresses 5 stages of grief perfectly. He portrayed those painful difficult emotions very well but BGM didn’t support enough. About him being genius, even GBZ knows almost everything like him, how couldn’t the genius not know? But that’s okay. Agreed to disagree. I only want to say the funny comments of antis are so laughable for showing their inferior complexities towards wyb. Like rating one star in douban before watching it. Baili is an antisocial awkward genius who doesn’t understand his feelings and how to get along with people. I watched many socially awkward genius characters who’re portrayed like ignorant or arrogant or sociopath. he’s the only one who has a pure soul like a child. His innocent aura balances anti social behavior nicely and portrayed the genius aloof personality perfectly. And another good thing is that his blunt answers and straightforwardness. Baili always make me laugh and his scenes are comedy gold. I don’t like a forced marriage but his romance is getting sweeter after ep12. (Even the detective plot is better after ep 15) Antis can cry in the corner. Nobody cares. general public appreciates his talent more and more.

Finally you dressed that louyang themed attire.. 😄 I'm actually waiting for your first impression and I'm preparing myself for the good and esp the bad pts luckily it was within acceptable range and agreeable pts. I expected some not logical writing plot/scenes tho. But still so far it has not greatly put the drama in the bad light. I'm just so happy that Wang Yibo was able to give a delightful and interesting performance in Louyang. I'm so proud of him. Kudos also to the production team for the visual design, the phasing, the camerawork.. it was just so good and was able to catch the superb acting performance of the actors. I hope in the later episodes we can see improvement on plot writing with improved logic setting.

I was waiting your review. I am not a Chinese drama fan tbh. I watch Chinese dramas because of Yibo and Luoyang has the best production quality among costume dramas I have watched within 2 years. Although it has some flaws in Character development and script, it is acceptable for me as I can still follow the script (I had to read original novel for some other dramas coz I didn’t understand the plot Lol). I must admit HX’s acting is the best but All 3 leads do their jobs well. As a Yibo’s fan, I can see his development in acting and I love his character which I think very hilarious and makes the story more enjoyable. The best thing in this drama is original voice as I can’t stand dubbing. In my experiences of Chinese drama watching, this is the first time I don’t wanna fast forward and would like to watch more. I really hope pacing and script to continue like this.

Why u so hurt? i enjoyed zhou fei keep your negative to yourself. Just letting u know zhou fei was filmed i remembered correctly first yr of covid 19 and when it just happened and affected a lot of ppl so they have to use fake sets for the drama. Ppl were quite disappointed but given the circumstances, they have to continue filming. PPL like u loves to use the mouth and not the brain and ZLY also came out to voice her opinions using picture, which causes quite a stirred was already expected won’t be as good but i enjoyed the wuxia drama it was not that bad if u actually pay attention to the story and not just the people

She is still strong IMO people forget she is 18 in the drama. GBZ is completely different with all the men she met and he saved her life twice even throwing away his goal or life. Who wouldn’t be moved? WSY is daring and straightforward. I can’t expect her character in love too different from that tbh. And does it make her weak? I don’t think so. Being emotional or crying doesn’t make a warrior or a young girl weak. She is still good at her job and bossing the man she loves right?

Compared to many other historical drama, you can see the super good quality they got here in this drama. . Louyang is a showcase of Ancient Chinese Civilization, thanks for the partnerships on the production side for giving us the chance to glimpse on the culture of Ancient China thus we not only enjoy aesthetically but also gains knowledge of the ways of life,traditions,society,etc. For me,this got a Longest day in Changan feels maybe because this is also one of Ma Boyongs novel. Thanks a lot to him for featuring historical places in his stories. Hands up for Huang Xuan's excellent acting as the main lead. He really nailed it. No one can do justice to the role but him only. The best historical/costume drama of 2021👍. This deserves awards. Am a historical chinese drama buff and Louyang is of great significance to different ruling dynasties, this drama is a good source of enriching my little knowledge . Congratulations to everyone involved in this excellent production.

For me the show is actually well paced , I love how it doesn’t drag over a certain event over and over again . I also love all of the three main leads acting , it is excellent and brilliant for me so far . The visuals are stunning and gorgeous as well , it captures the essence of Luoyang city during that time of the wu-zhou period which I actually appreciate . On the point you mentioned about the bgm , I don’t mind the soundtrack being used , but I agree that it is a little too much over excessive when used . All in all tho for me this is one of the best dramas released in 2021 (if not the best for me imo ) , and I love it so much so far after watching all 16 episodes . Hopefully it stays this good in the other half of the drama !!

Yes I agree, the cinematography, sets and color tone is brilliant, the dubbing is realistic and all 3 lead actors do a good job.I really like the underworld scenes too.And yes the biggest problem is sometimes it feels like the production crew is trying too hard to push an emotion( too many flashbacks and backstory in GBZ case). And I find song yi character annoying as the drama progresses..the amount of times she says “Erlang” in an episode??omg sometimes I have anticipatory dread of hearing her say it lol. Her being rich and aristocratic, doing the housework is unrealistic too..However I’m enjoying the pace of the story, hope they keep it up!

I am so glad, I am not the only one, who finds Song Yi character highly annoying. Her character is not very bright, doesn't seem to know when to shut up. And the amount of times she says "Erlang" it makes me cringe. I hope she does not get anyone killed, but ends up getting herself killed, sparing us the audience from her whining of "Erlang". Love the drama though, it is fast paced.

I watched up to ep 16 and I like this drama so far. The story moves along in a good pace, although there are a bit too many flashbacks for my taste, but I guess this is very common in c-dramas and Asian dramas in general. Good acting, awesome camerawork, and I agreed that the background sound can be toned down a bit... LOL. This is not a documentary, so I'm fine with their interpretation of costumes or hairstyles of that era, it's probably a bit more of a "high fashion" take of the Tang dynasty, which will not be accurate enough for a documentary but it's fine for a fiction. Baili Hongyi's knowledge seems to be extraordinary for someone his age, but well, that's why it's called drama where everything is dramatized :) I think most of his knowledge can be attributed to the fact that he used to work at the Ministry of Work. This department seems to be doing a lot of construction of big buildings for the government/royalty, so it makes sense that he is familiar with materials like copper and keys/locks. I imagine most of these buildings need to have some fancy lock, like the snake lock to prevent burglars, so it makes sense to me that he recognized the snake lock and knew how to make the key for it without much effort. The autopsy thing is a bit exaggerated but it didn't bother me much. I do hope the pace stays the same through the end. Eps 15 and 16 seem to be slowing down a bit with many flashbacks that take too long without moving the story along, so hopefully this doesn't continue :)

I am very much enjoying this series. It is such a big change from a lot of the ones I have simply abandoned watching this year. The whole thing feels as though it has depth, rather than just being a paper cut-out. The opening chase/fight scene actually left me open-mouthed. I usually prefer a good dollop of romance with my action, but I am hooked on this one.

You're so insightful - I love hearing your commentaries! You're totally on point about Liu Ran and Baili Hongyi and Yuehua-jun, and also about the unnecessary expensive scenes that kind of drag on. As for the plot, I feel like it dragged for a few episodes, but then there was an exciting turning point at episode 20, and I'm excited to see what happens next. I also don't understand the romance they've introduced (I won't say who, because of spoilers), because it doesn't seem to be based on anything. Also, I love the silly comedic moments with Baili Hongyi and Liu Ran, but the tone is so different from the other parts of the show sometimes!

Overall loved that the drama moves along nicely. Fighting scenes are great, loved Song Qian fulfilling her role as leader of the inner guards. Huang Xuan's acting is what makes this drama top notch, his emotions are conveyed beautifully. The script writer has Wang Yibo's character being a genius at everything while so young, lessens the credibility of the story but I guess they didn't want to invest in another main character (although the young wife's part could have been cut down.) Hope the rest of the episodes continue smoothly, I haven't been disappointed yet.

In later episode Song Yi's character's father appeared from nowhere and left in the same episode, didn't add anything to the story rather it got me confused. She is also too clingy and annoying. I didn't like how our female lead was becoming weak because of the male lead can we have a strong female character who reminds strong and not become weak or stupid when a guy shows up for a minute in her life. By the way who made this rule that the male lead and female lead must be love interests, it is becoming too redundant . Well I'm still following the story.

Agree. The forced romances are annoying and take away from the plot somewhat. If they can somehow make them relevant to the plot then OK I can buy it, but otherwise better for the drama to not include them. I like the idea of a strong woman able to fight & strategize but please don't make her become weak when she falls in love. I don't get the Baili Hongyi/Liu Ran marriage at all so far, but hope that it will make sense by the end.

I've watched up to episode 6 so far. At first it was a little too fast for me in the first episode but the cinematography etc was so good and there was intrigue so I stuck around and I am glad I did. Really enjoying it so far. Looking to get back into the series very soon. Yes and I totally agree with the cons you pointed out hahahahaha. Especially the music part😂😂😂😂

You are so on point about the flashback scene with GBZ. When I was watching it, my exact thought was that it was totally unnecessary lol As for BLHY knowing how to do an autopsy, he told BGZ that even if he didn’t show up he’ll do it himself (autopsy his father) so I took it to mean he knows how and that he didn’t learn it from watching a bit from GBZ before he had to leave the room. Scholar that he is, he could have read about autopsy techniques in texts so he has the knowledge, just not the practical experience.

i am enjoying the drama very much and really satisfied in terms of production pace and plot .The three leads are also interesting in their own way .I am enjoying the side loveline of Liu Ran and Erlang too .considering evrything i think the small flaws can be easily overlooked because otherwise its a good drama to watch .

Finally..thank you for the review.. I really love this drama like this could be the best of 2021, but really have some big problem with it too.. 1. Ep 14 suddenly became weird, like the quality somehow drop 75% especially on that kidnapping scene 2. I actually love both main couple but Gao and Wu relationship/feeling too fast paced and sometimes feels forced not like Erlang and Liu's, as if they have cut off so many of their relationship development scenes..lol. just wish this will get better in the later episodes.. 3. But i still love it so much that i do voluntarily ignore all the nonsensical stuff in it😂 4. Just hoping the quality, not only in visual but the storyline and everything in it won't dropped in the later episodes 5. Feels like the Empress is the only one (other than the main characters) with an actual common sense so far, which making me have a hard time to understand what is there to hate about the Empress--well beside the poor underground place she allegedly made innocent people lived in, other than that she looks pretty much a decent Empress tho..or is it me that miss something? . Oh btw can anyone tell me how they're addressing Wu Siyue? I think they call her with some kind of honorific but i can't catch what they're saying..

I kind of disagree with your second point. I love the main CP's story line the most. It is not fast-paced if you carefully analyzed only their storyline in detail. Like how Song Qian explained in a recent interview, the two are both kind-hearted souls and were able to connect with each other not through words but actions, just like soulmates. That is why most of their scenes are just eyes talking and body language, through those scenes we know that they both have feelings for each other but cannot go forward due to personal burdens. The scenes at the beginning, when they helped to save other people together, showed how they come to know and understand each other. The two knew that they were both fighting for the same thing which is justice, despite their disparity in backgrounds/social class. They both deeply respected and trusted each other. This understanding allowed their feelings to grow into love without ever confessing to each other verbally that they love each other. But both of them knew each other's feelings very well. They are just afraid to confront it due to mainly the male lead not being able to let go of his burdens, which is understandable, and the whole purpose of the plot. But I do find that their scenes are not a lot together. It does seem like the editing crew cut a lot of their scenes...

@@jyanneskye2535 i get what you're saying, i knew it too that they have this 'red string' tied on their fingers since the first time they save that little girl together, but the one downside about that is they also have this "connection beyond words" with Erlang, that's why it's a bit hard to distinguish whether it's the teamwork or the romance. And i still blame the writing and the lack of scenes on them actually visually connecting either through actions or words without making it feel forced

I fond that Song Yi character doesn't make sense to me as well. I understand her love for Wang Yibo character, but they way she became domesticated so fast didn't fit with the time period and her status.

I'm just commenting based on the two episodes I have managed to watch due to working all the time so late: I just like so much how the drama is shot, it gives me Guy Ritchie vibes with the camerawork, especially in the fighting scenes. But what bothers me, but just me, is when you're tired, the line delivery is so fast that it's hard to read all the subtitles and grasp what they're talking about, so half of the plot is missed due to this fact; the pacing of this drama is just little bit too fast constantly, it's hard to follow it along when you have to read those blasted subtitles just to understand what they're talking about. Nonetheless, I will endeavour to watch this further and get over my own predicament of tiredness when watching this and try to focus reading the subtitles faster. And the historical facts about this period and people made me more interested in this drama, I love it when dramas and films are based on something historical.

Luoyang and Imperial Coroner are my two favourite dramas of 2021. Both dramas have stories that are progressing, with few fillers. The different arcs are also well-linked. Luoyang stands out in terms of the sets and choreography. (It had a larger budget). On the other hand, Imperial Coroner had a cute lead actress who was into her role.

I have been waiting for this review. I agree with each and every remark that avenuex made. The story so far is quite intriguing and makes one continuously guess what might the truth be. And the best part is, each episode ends with a cliff-hanger that keeps me waiting for the next one. One thing that I find both good and bad about is that the camera work plays too much importance. I mean in some scenes the camera work is so good (like avenuex too mentioned) that it takes me out of the story itself and I start to wonder about the cinematography more than the story itself, which it should not be. Like in the chase scenes especially; instead of focussing on the story, I start to wonder how it might have been shot. Camera work should accommodate the storyline and not otherwise. Another thing which I find a little weird after watching so many chinese period dramas over the past few years, where the each family (be it royal or normal), there are too many people; like each head of family has multiple wives and they have many many children. Whereas in this drama there are too little members in the family. Baili family has only father and son. And when the father died, its just the son. Yes there are branch families, who once came to reclaim status, but its just for one scene, that's it. Same with his wife's family (uncle and niece only). Wu Siyue has only one brother, and Gaobingju is the only son. I find it too less for a chinese drama. 😅😅 Wrote too much but last thing I would like to say - why doesn't the drama makers gave GBZ a bath? Everyone else is clean. Even after a fight scene everyone is as fine as if they just dressed up, may be with a little dirt here and there. Even the "ghetto" (that's what the subtitle says) people are clean when they are supposed to be devoid of basic facilities of citizen. What's wrong with GBZ's character?🤷‍♀️

Ha ha Baili definitely has a brother as he is the second son. His wife also has a brother. Both brothers were only mentioned once but I think they would show up in later episodes. It’s odd that Liu Ran’s uncle has no children, I think it’s the deliberate plot so that he would love her as a daughter and hence, would sacrifice for her.

that's why it's genre is FICTION?..cuz some details are supposed to be only in our imaginations but the details are too important to cut it out so it should be on the script and let our imagination run the rest, no need for "details to details" kind of, the most important is they followed the plot of the story that they adapted and the main thought was there...novels aren't perfect when it's not based on true stories ,..

I dont think his father was looking to climb from the convo with baili after what happen with his first son he wanted a stronger alliance to keep his second son protected after all baili can't fight... I find the anatomy a bit off but if he read up on it then it's plausible he was just looking for a certain thing... baili is 22 a genius that spent his entire time learning he never went out and had fun or that sort of thing if he is studying engineering then knowing artitecture is plausible we learn all that by age 22 copper is just one material and purifying materials is not hard either so his knowledge is not off to me... I think because some ppl might know alot of tang dynasty then you nickpick stuff but as a general audience its not far fetch... Liu ran character is out of character to me as well idk if she behaves this way as she is obsess with baili she even went out her way to get him that manual that haven't been seen for years, spend money on anything to get baili what he wants she is trying very hard to please him and be his wife... For me the con was the force relationship between gbz and wsy the way she's behaving like they were in love for years and he betray her.... I find her brother is alot like baili dad he's dying and wants her to chose a husband to be there for her since its just the two of them

I think its normal for him to know things like making key to locks or smelting copper etc as his father and also he were involved in mynstry of works where u should clearly know about various mechanics ,construction materials etc.and about anatomy , though he knew but he couldnt actually do tht on his father's body when he did for the first time .so it could be that he just knew how to do but never actually did.since he is a knowledge seeking person it can be expected that he read about it .judging that way i think its not totally illogical .and his charachter is not like totally flawless and angel like ,so his level of intelligence is acceptable i think

I've been enjoying this one, and am currently up to Ep. 13. I agree with you about the slo-mo, because they seem to fall back on it frequently.There are a few moments with the flashbacks that are "wait, what?" but it definitely holds my interest. (Not a show I can knit to because I need to focus on the subtitles.) I will say that when we first saw the lair of a certain group, and there was the large...light art piece (trying to avoid spoilers) slowly rotating, my reaction was, "Oh, we're in a Bond film" because there were some serious Bond villain vibes in that set.

This is such a captivating drama, with action scenes that feel too real, bloody and sometimes a tad too long 😂 I'm liking it and can suspend my questioning some illogical stuff simply because the actors and visuals are working hard to present a good story. I like both main couples, but BLHY and LR has more chemistry and better developed than BGZ and WSY. LR is too devoted to BLHY, but thank god not nearly as annoying like girls is other chinese dramas. I feel the "bad guys" are not as well presented as the good guys. I'd like to be able to feel the crimes and the "badness" of the mysterious enemy, but I still couldn't. Overall, this is a great closing for 2021 costume drama. Like getting cool fresh water when it's hot and sunny out there 😄

Actually most passerby fans like the main cp chemistry more than the 2nd leads. Many including myself didn’t expect them to match so well. But WYB is top traffic so the drama promote him and his love line mostly. People actually complained because all the hot search they bought are about him and his sweet love line. Like it would make people who don’t watch this drama think this is a sweet love dramas Meanwhile iqiyi has been been deleting main cp videos on Bilibili everyday but it doesn’t stop them.
