I read the book years ago so it's not all that fresh in my mind, which I think is good--I just remember the general outline of the story and so I can thoroughly enjoy this version on its own merits. And boy does it have merits! I'm obsessed with it, it's so so good. I really can't see how Netflix can come even close, and it frustrates me that so many people aren't going to watch this version simply because they don't know about it or because they "don't like foreign stuff with subtitles". I'm blown away by how good it looks, how tight and engrossing the storyline is, the acting, the pacing, the visuals--and on such a low budget! I've been a scifi/fantasy fan for most of my life and only pretty recently into C-dramas, so for me it's an amazing feeling when those two things collide and the result is this good.

It's refreshing to see a show made by people that truly understand and appreciate the source material. I hope everyone spreads word of how fantastic this series is. I REALLY want them to make the other two books but they're going to be way more expensive to produce IMO. So shut up and take my money, Tencent.

I really enjoy listening to Avenue X, because their reviews are not frivolous: she teach us to look at films and series in a more technical, profound and critical way (actors' performance, plot, image, special effects...) and, being Chinese and having worked in the Chinese entertainment industry, she helps us understand the Chinese history and society portrayed in these films and series and the specificity of the entertainment industry as well as the "crazy world of Chinese fans".

(São Paulo/Brasil) This adaptation of Three Body is such a relief for me... After knowing about the work being on the hands of those at Netflix who can't make good script decisions and expending too much money on It, puting the series in risk looong before It starts, i was devastated. The joy, besides the story of my so beloved Cixin Liu trilogy, is to finally know some wonderful senior chinese actors, since my little experience on chinese shows involves too much young characters. Sometimes it looks like only teenagers matters in China. Am i crazy to think that? Sorry to say that... So happy about this show. Thank you for your comments. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I haven't watched Chinese shows in a long time, so it took me a few episodes to get used to the acting, mannerisms and other things that are different from the western shows. But what they did for that amount of money is incredible. The core cast is excellent, too, I love the bromance and all the characters from the flashbacks. Young Ye Wenjie better win a bunch of awards for her work here. Just finished the last episode. The last episode had me literally shaking. Now the wait begins for season 2. The film makers took this drama seriously. Everything screams passion project I was absolutely impressed and satisfied. For such an acclaimed book, they did it justice and respect which was the most concerning thing when books get adapted. None of that dumb stuff happened. I hope none of that dumb stuff sneaks into the second season either, but I am worried it would not be able to reach the same level of quality. I understand what you mean by the "stuff that can't be shown on screen" my brother says that the book goes deep into that so in comparison and for me the motivation building up to the moment where humanity's fate was decided by one person's small action was kind of not enough for me. Also the exposition dump at the last episode although it was kind of needed, I just wished all that info wasn't just delivered like that. My only peeves with this amazing drama. While Netflix won't have censorship issues, they got a whole bunch of issues of their own that makes me doubt the adaptation after what they did to Witcher and what the showrunners did with GoT last season. I guess for this situation, the more adaptations the better. Competition is a good thing for consumer at the end. We can watch all three and pick our fav.

I also watched to episode 15 before coming here to comment on your review. Like many others, I’m a huge fan of LCX’s work and have read the entire 3BP trilogy, along with some of his other works like Wandering Earth and Ball Lightning. The first few episodes were fantastic. I was impressed with the humanization of the characters, the music, and even the storytelling to allow us to understand why some of these scientists would have ended their lives. I especially enjoyed the bromance between the 2 male leads and how it contributes to their character development, especially for Wang Miao. I don’t mind them adding other characters and expanding some character roles (with a huge exception I’ll explain later). It makes sense that the police would have assistants and instead of writing in 10 side characters, they added a super human woman to do the job. And it also makes sense that Wang Miao would seek the assistance of astrophysicists to solve the 3bp. However, I have a huge problem with the expansion of the reporter’s role. For the amount of additional screen time she’s got, it is incredibly disproportionate to the incremental value she adds to the story. Wouldn’t they have spend more energy investigating Pan Han or Shen Yiufei instead? Come on, Shi Qiang is too much of an experienced cop to waste his time on her like that. It also wastes precious film time that can be used to explore Ye Wenji’s character, which brings me to my next point. So far, the show failed to capture the essence of Ye Wenji philosophical and psychological struggles. There is of course censorship issues, but maybe they can spend more screentime telling it a different way. She’s pretty much made up her mind about humanity before she got to the Red Coast in the book and I did not get that sense at all in the show. Sure, it showed some (albeit not all) of the horrible things that happened to her, but falls short of the character development that this show desperately needs for her character-she’s too smart for that simple portrayal. I have a feeling that these 2 problems are maybe related. Maybe they did show it but it got cut in censorship and now they had to fill it in with the reporter story. But I wish instead they could explore Pan Han’s deconstruction POV and Shen Yiufei’s reconstruction POV more than just telling us in their dialogues. I have more expectations for the Netflix adaptation. For 1 thing, they won’t have censorship issues and can explore all the political and social injustice issues. 2nd, they got the author to consult for them. The only problem is, they are gonna have to change many of the characters to other nationalities since it is not an all Asians cast. So the authenticity is going to be lost but hopefully the added diversity will be a force for good.
@lulcKathy Жыл бұрын
I already finished all 30 episodes, I didn't get the addition of the reporter's role either, but it will start to make more sense in the later episodes. Some of the other issues you mentioned get expanded in the later episodes as well.

I also have to say as someone who gets very depressed about the environment and climate change as a whole, this show will not do you any favors if you're like me, I've learned new things about the way we completely disrupt and destroy nature from this show which just makes me feel sad, don't even get me started on the scenes where they're all merrily cutting down a whole damn forest SIGH. Also the cultural revolution, I tried searching web, but couldn't fully understand the situation. Is it like the renaissance? Like the fight between science and church? I couldn't understand. If anyone can explain in layman's term, thanks in advance. So far I have many many question about the story and waiting for the answers by episode 30. The actor are all superb, not only the main characters, but the secondary ones as well. Whenever I can see the characters beyond the actors its an added bonus.

What happened to Ye family was mostly explained via Ye’s narrative to Wang Miao without much visual image. Basically, Ye’s mother and younger sister betrayed Ye’s father and resulted in him dying from torture by the Red Guard. Later, her sister, who joined the Red Guard, died when she was killed in a power struggle between different factions in the Red Guard (Ye told Wang about this through talking about a dream she had). The Cultural Revolution was a dark period in Communist Ruled of China when knowledge, education and political ideas that are not aligned with Mao Zedong’s brand of Communism were deemed to be anti revolution and anti proletariat and need to be eradicated. Those from an educated background were encouraged to denounce each other in return for better treatment. Educated people were forced to go to rural areas and engaged in hard labour. Red Guard was formed to police people thoughts and punished those with “deviant” thinking. In a way, it’s also a youth movement that went seriously wrong and being used as a tool for purging political enemy. Ye, who like his father, was a genius physicist, suffered in this era as a result of the betrayal of her mother and sister, who severed their kinship with her and her father. Her situation was made worse after she was framed by the character played by Bai Yu.

@@deyayona The Cultural Revolution was a social movement. At first, it encouraged the people to criticize the bureaucracy, and finally evolved into armed confrontation. In fact, it is an extreme movement of leftist political correctness. The original purpose of the movement is to criticize landlords, capitalists, bad people, and rightists. Then it turned into a political factional struggle. Innocent people were also involved in it. I am Chinese, and the CCP also admits that this is a mistake, and they call it a ten-year catastrophe.
@treedillon Жыл бұрын
"吟游诗人" was very clear, and I'll just add. You can think of China as a company where the chairman is "central" of CPC and the other directors are "local & various factions" CPC, other parties and people without party affiliation. One day, the chairman of the board said in the meeting: some directors, no longer "side with the people", when someone judge who is "bad", you should pay attention to "evidence", and use language to help them correct, do not use violence. Then, the group of "bad" directors used the chairman's phrase to suppress dissenters and expanded the original "solving problems within the party" to include "the people" (employees framing each other to gain their own benefits). In 10 ep, Bai Mulin quietly tells Ye Wenjie that he will write a letter to the central leadership to reflect the problems of the forest farm (employees directly report to the chairman). But the letter was withheld by his immediate superior. In 11 ep, in the interrogation process, the personnel sent by the immediate superior also convicted Ye Wenjie without "evidence" (which is not consistent with what the chairman said). Storie like the chairman and the "bad directors" are still happening in China. For example, there are many "strange things" happening in Shanghai in April 2022. That's another topic...

the anime covers book 2 dark forest where the hero is a sociologist. I find the book 2 story dark forest too weird and too unbelievable.

So far, the drama depiction of the reply to the aliens might be different from the novel. I heard 1 alien warned the main female not to reply bec the aliens will cause human extinction, but the main female decided to reply anyway in spite of the warning from 1 alien.

I've been enjoying this show quite a bit, but there is one small thing that I find very weird. They never mention countries by their real name in the show, they just say "Country M in North America" or "Country T in Europe" etc. Is this some weird censorship thing? In the book countries were refered to by their real world names, like US, UK, Russia etc.
@krymz1 Жыл бұрын
don't they start calling "countries" by letters like that later on in the books at one point? I might be misremembering... I remember thinking "they're already calling themselves like that?". what I found odd was the blurred out pages of books and documents. you could not pause and read what they were reading. I was wondering if it was a kind of artsy form of transmitting how censorship was so present in the day, or if it actually was censorship...

@@krymz1 i don't remember them calling countries by letters in the books, maybe it did happen at some point, it's been a while since I read the books. But I think in the scenes where combat zone representatives discuss the operations they are introduced as being from specific countries, like US, UK. One US general even plays a part in the ship scene. Yeah, I also did notice the blurring on scientific papers, which was odd. I thought maybe it's because they are written in English, but later on they do show excerpts from the bibliography that are not blurred. So who knows...

Without going into the debate about the cinematographic quality of this series, I have to say that they have taken me out of the story that I thought was science fiction. The "signals" that have taken me out of it have been progressive: a scientist praying to some divine entity... a note on a computer implying that all this is the work of "Mr. Will", and a few shots with a church in all its splendor in the background ended up turning the series from being science fiction to religious fantasy adorned with scientific data to offer a certain "seriousness" for me. I will wait for the conclusion of the series and its outcome to keep the eye on it or not. (It does not seem fair to me to blur the difference between science and religion through the assertion "religious faith in science"; science is the accumulation of knowledge through experience and religion is the denial of experience through faith to maintain their beliefs). I dont want to finish with negativity when i rarely write in this comment section,i want to thanks for the always well-done reviews in this channel that are a precious guide for my list to dramawatching

Bluring the lines between science and religion is actually part of the "Master Plan" and is tied to the story of ETO and what they are trying to accomplish. Keep on watching.
@halia9874 Жыл бұрын
@@sovijusAre you saying that the story is about a malevolence plan of one or some human beings introducing hallucinogenic drugs to scientists? because if by "master plan" you mean the will of the scriptwriters to erase those lines, no thanks, I already had enough of that mix in the middle of a pandemic when mixers knocked on the door saying that they were going door-to-door spreading the word of that Mr.Plan When I knew that a science fiction series comes from China, that gave me some hope... my negativity may come from the disappointment to see that (maybe?) they are making the same west mistakes taking account of a religious approach.

@@halia9874 "Are you saying that the story is about a malevolence plan of one or some human beings introducing hallucinogenic drugs to scientists?" Kind of... if you haven't read the books don't want to spoil. It is very much part of the story as I said, not scripwriters.

@@sovijus No, I haven't read the books, thanks for the clarification. The way they are delivering certain data in the story can lead you the other way (I hope this aspect will not be left open to interpretation in the conclusion).

Well ... i love science & I love science fiction & I love fantasy - as long as its not sadistic. I understand science to be knowledge of " what is". Religion to be more of a "who dunnit, and how and why?" Fantasy is "what if...?" Did you ever play "What if...?"

it depicts some environmental damages so those who are prone to depression should probably avoid the three body drama. 0 romance so some who only watch romance dramas are probably not watching this drama. Drama is very slow and when reaching ep 16, the story is sort of only beginning.

I really want to love this series, but Gah! So slow, repetitive, and depressing. Hit me over the head with stylization. I get it! He’s stressed, he’s questioning his sanity. Enough with the tropey cinematic cues all ready. It just goes on and on.

I just don't see how Netlfix version can top this one with all those bigotry western producers have in their mind. If you are a Chinese, you can tell from Shang-Chi ,Mulan and many of those China topic related movies even Kongfu panda, that the prejudice to Chinese doesn't change much for the last 100 years. And in this period of time when the all western world is evilizing China, I can't only expect nothing from the Netflix's adaptation.
@TL-fe9si Жыл бұрын
As a Chinese, I'll give a pass to Kongfu Panda. It is good, and it is produced with a good affection for the culture. Can't say much about the others

so nobody will address the elephant in the room? the soundtrack in the first 4 episodes sounds eerily more than similar to a successful sci fi tv show from germany?....it gives the word "inspiration" a whoe new meaning
