I lived in Chengdu from 2009 to 2018. In 2009, the only public transit was buses and taxis. By the time I left 6 subway lines were open and there was car sharing. It was incredible, and the changes were actually emotional taxing. Chengdu, and most of China, is very affordable compared to western countries. It gets very expensive when you consider putting children into K-12 private school! 😢

$1050 a month is pretty modest amount to spend in a metropolis such as Chengdu where life is relatively comfortable at a modest cost. Last visited 19 years ago, the city must have changed beyond recognition. I like places where your dollar can stretch quite a bit, Chengdu seems to be one such place in China.

Nice video. My fiance and I are looking to move from Beijing to a different city and this has definitely given us some perspective. It's a beautiful city and your apartment is wonderful - - especially given the price. We live in an apartment that's not even half as large and are paying nearly 6k. It's ridiculous!

My girlfriend and I are planning on doing the same. We also live in Beijing and our rent is 10K per month (because we live in ZhongGuanCun which is a very expensive place). The location is great though but that price. Although based on this video, the only thing we will really be able to save on is rent. Everything else is similarly priced as it is in Beijing. Whether or not our life changes for the better is going to depend on if our salaries stay the same or are higher.

That's the new Chinese dream! In America it's become almost impossible to own a home, and even if I owned a home, I would be taxed massively for it for the rest of my life as if it wasn't my home at all :(

This is definitely useful information. Let just say it's about 8,000 yuan per month. That's slightly higher than home (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). Groceries are comparatively similar to home. I'll be moving to ChengDu this August.

确实,这个我深有体会,比如点外卖,大城市选择多,又实惠,小城市选择少,还不便宜。这也许跟大城市资源分配有关吧。除了房价/房租,衣食交通等生活开销,大城市反而更便宜。

Looks like a beautiful place to stay. I would love to live in Chengdu. My biggest hurdle would be the language barrier. I'm Chinese but don't speak or understand mandarin. At my age I feel it would be such a steep learning curve that it would make my life difficult.

You are living alone. If you are living with a partner, or just sharing, that reduces the cost of rent. My flat in Chengdu is 4000, for 100m2, so that's just 2000 each. I rarely drink coffee outside, too expensive, and we normally eat out once a week, unless invited by, or inviting friends. Otherwise we cook at home (actually "I" cook is more accurate...). A week's worth of veggies for two is only about 25 kuai. So our weekly trip to the market is about 125 including meat, again for 2, but then we also buy other stuff online. Also, subway is not the only option. I ride shared bikes for any distance less than 8-10 km, and it's a lot cheaper still. So in the end, my regular monthly budget is less than 5000, for what I consider very comfortable living.

Well then in Vancouver, you would spend twice your monthly cost of living in Chengdu for rental alone. 😂😂😂 You pay $500/month for that rather cozy apartment in Chengdu; you'd be looking at $2000/month in Vancouver. (Internet is ~$100/month. Cellphone ~$85/month.)
@watericed777

If you rented that is. If you buy, the real estate has been appreciating approximately 5-25% (sometimes as much as 50% during the peak) annually - so you pretty much get living expenses free, if you plan on selling it.
