ive been playing classical guitar all my life but also wanna be able to play electric in a band. do you have any advice on picking up electric?? i have an old fender tele that wants to played thanks so much ur the best!!
@valdemarkonov27 күн бұрын
@@jjvmi haha well I actually started on electric, but I would defo recommend you try learning some basic riffs to get used to the basic techniques and the feeling (enter sandman, sweet dreams, crazy train, can’t stop, iron man etc, those all have basic power chords and pentatonics that sorta appear in all of electric guitar music and I start with those with my students. If you have that much experience this should probably just take you a couple of days) You could start learning those and other riffs with youtube tutorials (Marty Schwartz, Guitar Lessons 365 etc) and expand your vocab on the new instrument. I would then suggest figuring out what genre you want to get into and work on developing the needed skillset - if it’s rock/blues I would start learning pentatonic scales and licks that are widely available on the internet, try some blues imporv youtube tutorials! If it’s metal I’d try learning the minor and harmonic minor scales, a bit of arpeggios and defo drop tunings, also (this is highly specific but I think it really is a milestone) I think learning master of puppets by Metallica is a key step in becoming a metal guitarist at the beginning- it has all the power chords you need, the solos are FILLED with basic and common shapes that are used everywhere and it’s just about challenging enough to be convenient to learn but also not a walk in the park. If you wanna play modern stuff I’d recommend trying lots of classical guitar techniques on the electric! Also you can get started with Quintuplet meditation by Tim Henson and Lit and Euphoria by Polyphia, those are relatively easy in terms of modern guitar and have most of the gimmicks that the genre uses! So pretty much - basic riffs with yt tutorials, figure out what you wanna play and research that genre and then learn a bit of techniques and theory related to that genre in order to freely practice it and write your own stuff! Hope that helps :D

I played it all fingerstyle and gave up once i tried using a plectrum bcos just found it so so weird to use. I really regret giving it up now cos I would be quite decent by now if i kept at all

@@jjvmi You have come to a great realisation and your plan sounds great! Also don't be afraid to challenge yourself! I myself actually started with very advanced pieces and learned the basics later but I am also used to that sort of learning, it's my thing. Hey! I am a very new to guitar. You said you are practicing every scale, some arpeggios etc. I want to learn the scales but don't know where to start, I only know the minor pentatonic one lmao, but I heard some other ones like lydian etc and I really don't know where to start. Should I learn scales across the full neck before moving on? Also is there a resource for all scales or am I doomed to learn music theory haha?
@valdemarkonov2 ай бұрын
Hi! I do that because I have studied theory and with time I just sorta found out what scales i wanna play and how to play them. Id say start with the major scale, any shape rlly, somewhere not too far up the neck, then take the minor scale and some pentatonic scale starting from the same note. Guitar is pattern based so once u can play 3 shapes confidently, then u can use them all over the neck. I’d recommend you learn shapes starting from the 6th and/or 5th string and learn what notes correspond to which fret on those strings. This way u will know what scale u r playing and u can use those accordingly, for example u can play an C major scale over a C major chord. If u know that u r playing a C major scale, then u will be able to play that over a c major chord. But considering u r just getting started, those will only be helpful for ur technique (make sure to practice with a metronome). Just start by learning some well known songs (those tend to have lots of useful stuff such as basic shapes like power chords or pentatonic boxes or basic chords and melodies and rhythms) and once u have played enough of those, u will start to recognize the patterns and connect the dots. Dont stress about it and have fun, like my practice routine has been built thru the years and I’m also a music college student so lots of the stuff I do does not even make much sense for most people. Have fun, as long as u do, u will learn more and more and things will start falling into place :) I wish u luck!

Any tips for mastering sweeping? I struggle with muting the strings on the middle strings and ive been playing along to a metronome to try and get rid of it but every time i attempt to speed it up the middle part of the arpeggio gets muted. I started sweeping 2 or 3 weeks ago and i cant seem to get past it. No one really posts exercises or actual useful tips to start sweeping so im lost, i have the speed and the picking motion down and its smooth but i can still hear dead notes

Hmmm try tilting ur pick so u hit the string diagonally, also this is probably a hand synchronization issue! Tbh this just RANDOMLY fixes itself one day, it’s rlly a matter of doing it long and often enough for ur hands to get used to the motion

If I really just speedrun it (like play the classical pieces without repetitions, play some songs at 1,25 or 1,50 or maybe even 2x speed) then it’s like 2hrs, realistically I usually do like 4 and it can sometimes get to like 10 or more, but that would also include producing, singing, piano and other stuff at one point.
