From Wiki... "According to Duncan, members of the band had played together before in Scotland, but had moved to London separately and met up by chance at a Traffic concert. They decided to jam together; a friend heard them and remarked: "This is too much for the average white man," which became adapted as the name of the band."

Such a great dance band- they really bring the funk!! "Cut the Cake" and their cover of the Isley Brothers' "Work to Do" would be great follow up AWB songs. I agree with others voting for Lighthouse's "One Fine Morning" too! And for one of the best bass lines you will ever hear, listen to Chic's "Good Times." I sing it anywhere, anytime when I get infected with a horrible earworm!!😅🎵❤️🎵

Cut the Cake from their Person to Person live album is their best version. It is a little slower and funkier than the radio version. Also check out their song Cloudy from that album. Hamish hits those high notes and it’s an amazing live song! Way better than their studio version.

Absolutely wonderful choice for a band that's been largely forgotten. Here's a Scottish band that fully absorbed and reproduced the American musical landscape especially the black performers. Many people were utterly surprised when they learned this actually was a white band--and from Scotland--how is that possible?! I think you'll love their vocals when you get around to it too. AWB's playing was always rock solid and inspiring and was ideally suited for parties.

You need to check out LIGHTHOUSE....an 11 piece band from Canada with Lots of Horns, strings. Somewhat like early Chicago and Blood Sweat + Tears. Im actually not crazy about their biggest hit "ONE FINE MORNING" from 1971 but thats the one you will find has the most "views". I'd check out the songs "1849" (About the California Gold Rush) or SWEET LULLABYE. Their 1972 Live Album from Carnegie Hall will slay you if your into Brass

I'm so glad you chose this song too! AWB are absolutely awesome and there's lots more to hear from them. Cut the Cake should be the next song to react to, both were no. 1 hits. Bonnie Bramlett (of the incredible Delaney and Bonnie and Friends band) came up with the band's name, they were the backup band for her first solo album. These songs were HUGE in the 70's. Other suggestions: Got the Love, Person to Person, If I Ever Lose This Heaven, School Boy Crush, Soul Searching. Great great band instrumentally as well as very soulful vocally. More AWB please!

The AWB was a Scottish funk & R&B band that had a series of soul & disco hits between 74-80. They had some good songs such as "When Will You Be Mine", "Let's Go Around Again" & "Cut The Cake". But the instrumental song "Pick Up The Pieces" in 1975 was their biggest hit.

I'm just going to get this out of the way first. I love watching you guys interact with the music. So keep going with the air guitar, bass, sax, drums to your heart's content. First of all, with Tower of Power you have funky, white hippies from the bay area of California playing killer funky soul music. AWB are funky white guys from the funky streets of Scotland. If you haven't heard Tower of Power play What is Hip yet, get on it. That's got some of the hippest and quickest funky bass playing in funk, and was very influenciel to scores of Bass players. Also for me the top of AWB play list for me is 1. Pick up the pieces 2 School Boy Crush 3. Person to Person 4. ( And my personal favorite) Work to Do, Every member is in full flight on this. Keep up the stellar work. Cheers.

The whole band came from the Perth, Dundee and Glasgow areas, they had great success in the States in the 70s, Hamish Stuart had one of the best falsetto voices ever in that genre. Sadly Robbie McIntosh (the drummer and from Dundee) died at an after party in LA when someone passed him bad drugs. The band leader Alan Gorrie (bass player and from Perth) also nearly succumbed, but Cher made him sick, which saved his life. RIP Robbie. Check out more of their albums, ,you will not be disappointed. Check out the rest of this album, it's knockout.

Born & raised in Harlem, NYC, the brothers fr the 'HOOD I grew up with were musically "fed" offa' huge helpings of Funk, R&B & Soul music. When THIS CLASSIC FUNK JOINT came out in '74, we figured this had to be a new, Black band but WHY did this new band name itself the "Average White Band"!!?? We figured it was a joke - until we saw the album cover!! Not only was this "kick-@ss funk band's" musicians were WHITE, they were from Scotland no less!! By then, ALL the folks who lived in Harlem, So Bronx & Brooklyn were straight HOOKED on AWB and their hit "Pick Up The Pieces"; & let me tell ya'..it was PLAYED EVERYWHERE!!! CERTIFIED "INNER CITY CLASSIC"!! .....This joint RITE here is 1 of my top 5, FAVE FUNK CREATIONS & is a PERMANENT MEMBER of my musical, play rotation list!!! Nick & Lex....your reaction to this joint is PURE GOLD!!! ESPECIALLY Lex's!!! I soooo grooved to your "Head-Noddin' ", Eye's Droppin' " ,"Brain-Boppin" & "Funk-Feelin' " flow - which U reminded how 1st reacted PHYSICALLY to the 1st time I heard this! Thank you guys; THANK YOU 4 taking me back when I 1st heard this AMAZIN', BLAZIN' FUNK CREATION!!

"Let's Go Round Again" and maybe "Cut the Cake" or "You Got It" next. "You Got It" (which is a great song with a lot of energy) was released on the same single as Pick up The Pieces and it was originally the A side, but PUTP was more popular in the discos so Atlantic bowed to the inevitable and made it the A side. I wonder if original copies with the original A and B side designations are worth more?

I saw these guys in concert one beautiful summer evening at the San Diego State University outdoor amphitheater. There were three headliners that night: Average White Band John Klemmer Earl Klugh I was going because of John Klemmer. I knew nothing of Earl Klugh's music, and of AWB, only what I'd heard on the radio; Cut the Cake and Pick Up the Pieces (we cleverly assumed the one naturally followed the other after a birthday party debacle). I thought (at the time) both songs were simplistic and too repetitious. I had considered arriving late in order to skip what I was sure was going to be a boring set. Wiser minds prevailed upon me to rethink that madness. As it turns out, those (anything but) average white Scotsmen were one hell of a kickass jam band. What a great time we had. In fact, the only drawback to the whole evening was the amount of time it took to take down then set up between acts. It was getting nigh unto one A.M. and we were still waiting for Earl Klugh. With one stool, one mic, and one guitar in a stand in the center of a bare stage, it seemed we'd be there all night before they got the rest of the band set up. Without any fanfare, some roadie walked out, picked up the guitar and started doing a sound check. That's when folks started yelling: "Let's go!" "Get on with it!" "It's almost time for breakfast!" I leaned over to the person next to me and said, "That's Earl Klugh." They said, "That's not Earl Klugh." I leaned to the person on my other side. "That's Earl Klugh, isn't it?" "What? No--. Is it?" "I think that's Earl Klugh." The shouting got worse; "Get on with it!" "They're all yelling at Earl Klugh," I said. "That's not Earl Klugh." "GET A MOVE ON!" At this point the roadie looked up and said, "What are you people complaining about? You live in San Diego. You've been listening to great music under the stars of a beautiful summer night. Relax." Several people applauded. Then the roadie said, "Shall we get started?" And he began to play. I said, "We just got yelled at by Earl Klugh."

You just boarded the Scottish Funk Train. Keep on this journey! Ride this groove with their second big hit, Cut The Cake, then drop the nasty groove with Schoolboy Crush. Enjoy the rich sultry vocals with Cloudy, A Love Of Your Own, and If I Ever Lose This Heaven. Then groove to the disco themed Let's Go Round Again. Work To Do, Queen Of My Soul, Person To Person ... way too many songs to mention all. A bit of caution, their live videos are great, but their studio work is so much better. I would suggest to react to studio versions to get the full effect.

A very similar song (but a little more 'poppy') is 'Mezzoforte - Garden Party'. Another similar great song that comes to mind is 'Earth, Wind & Fire - In The Stone'. Also, have you heard 'Reo Speedwagon - Roll With The Changes'? One of the best rock songs ever, and just like Chicago and Dooby Brothers, Reo Speedwagon had seemingly two different careers.

So tight, funky and danceable. Here's one you won't get anywhere else, Shuffle Demons Spadina Bus A horn based funky jazz band (certifiably insane bunch of Canuks). Also a Chicago like band Lighthouse One Fine Morning (You will never need another positive wake-up tune)

Put it this way guys . . . AWB was soo well known to their peers, Neil Peart Produced 2 albums called "Burning for Buddy: A Tribute to Buddy Rich (Vol. 1 1994)", which he plays on a few cuts among other greats, but for the last track; "Steve Feronne" (Tom Petty) plays drums on "Pick Up the Pieces" with the Buddy Rich Big Band. This (AWB) track played on Top 40, AOR FM, R&B and Jazz stations at the time (1974 and on). "Cut the Cake" is another must listen :). A possible Marathon for you 2 will be the set number 12. "Blow Your Horn" which you may enjoy: kzbin.info/aero/PL_zmdsN11qLEImMCZnwraaB70QK9jx79A (See descriptions on the Playlist) - Yet again, discovering the classics and diving into ALL types of music! Loving the journey guys! Nice dedication Nick! 😆

Other great 70s funk/disco instrumentals from about this same time include Billy Preston's "Outa Space" from 1972, the Commodores' "Machine Gun" from 1974, and MFSB's "The Sound of Philadelphia' from 1974. KC and the Sunshine Band's stuff also fits with this, songs like "Get Down Tonight" from 1975.

Two other songs from this album are "Got the Love" and "Work to Do". I'm absolutely sure the vocals will amaze you along with more of those funky riffs. Also around the same timeframe there was a group called The Brecker Brothers that had a hit with "Sneaken Up Behind You" amazing horns and jazzy funk.

In the 1970's, it was cool to be in band at school, every time you turned on the radio, there was some band, AWB, Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, ELO, David Sanborn, so many incorporating, infusing horns into their music, it was staple to have a horn section, or someone playing some kind of horn, Chicago, and it even continued into the 80's, even though groups were more electronic, New Wave, Techno, there's just something about adding a saxophone to a song, gives it that chutzpah 😉, lot of rappers have used it,..Jay-Z, ..do keep going, this band, that first album, I wore out on my record player,..."Cut The Cake, School Boy Crush", fantastic band,..Godspeed, Peace, ✌

This style of funk is a whole sub-genre from that time. Listen to Parlaiment Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins and that whole gang. You can hear how this style of funk had a strong influence on Steely Dan although they layered on those clever lyrics and rock guitar solos. This of course was also big in the Disco scene at the time.
