First of all you are not an Indian and if you are really Indian then, you should know what was happened to us back in the 19th and 20th century. You people don't know how much India was looted during british colonial time. There was a serious study regarding this and it was found that around 45trillion dollar were looted by those thief's. Today, India has 4th largest military in the world, first nation to land successfully on south pole of the moon [Even thief britisher's are not able to launch a satelite in space poor BRITISHER's ] , when britisher's were threw out of the nation India's literacy rate was 7% but in just 7 decades, now it's 73% literacy rate in India with world's largest democracy and still India is developing nation, after thief's empire was kicked off from the India we were not able to feed our population but now India is self-sufficient[ because of green revolution in India] that even India export's it's rice to other poor countries and India is one the largest exporter of wheat, rice etc. and there are various best thing about India that today India is able to become one of the fastest growing economy in the world.

Being an Indian I have a very strong feeling that whenever we talk about Indians/Indian history/Indian economy & developing programs, we always blame British & our political leadership but never blame ourselves that we are responsible for it directly. British came in power because few people wants always on the throne and allowed rest of Indian to be slaves then politicians wanted always in power and make slave again rest of Indians. Look at us in the 21st century we r still voting 🗳 in the name of caste creed and ironically those old government still wants us to vote for them.

Just like that india didn't grew economically for about 5 decades because it was closed to the rest of the world. Also india doesn't have rich country in it's neibourhood like China had to invest money and to trade with. Japan, SK ,Taiwan ,HK all were there to.manufacture there goods in china and sell them elsewhere. Because here people make babies to show the society, they are not barren. They raise babies, so as they could help them in old age. They brain wash children to take jobs, which make their parents proud in society. Never follow your own passion. Doing your own homeworks like cleaning, cooking and repairing is a low caste activity, so it must not not be practiced. India is poor because you are not to express yourself, if it is conflicting older people and century old customs. And, you must never listen to the young ones because they always blabber in high adrenaline state, without making any sense.

Corruption is the most difficult problem to get rid off and I was born in one. I always thought that we can never win. There is a bright side. China and Vietnam were extremely corrupted like Indian. Today they choose to correct the problems. In China and Vietnam recently they put to death the most high ranking and corrupted officials. They send out a strong signal that no one is immune to that. You missed the very important point of why India was left poor. It is because Britain looted India for 250 years, destroyed the local economy to it's roots, broke the traditional education system which was much more advanced than any other country. Books burnt down, temples destroyed, people were treated as slaves. They did everything to reduce it to ashes, but what they don't know is we are like Phoenix which can rise from ashes. Some people say Brits left long back, yet India is still poor, the reason is, it is broken in all ways to such an extent that it really need lot of time to rebuild from scratch.

The current stakeholders though will do everything to maintain the status quo; it'll be even harder among those who want changes to reach a consensus on what degree they have to go, how to realize it, and what shares people should settle on post-revolution - which means you have to go through much infighting first. @@vivekvs9678 actually, you're half right. Your points 2,4, and the last one are reasons. Its not really the money the British looted from India..its the mindset that was hammered into the very first politicians by them. The first few politicians of free India were very influenced by the British. They picked up the model of exploitation directly from them. You may not know this, but the education system of India is actually designed by the British to enslave India. While China, Korea, etc. changed their education systems, *India did not*. This is the biggest problem in our development. Now enough blaming the British, look into ourselves. We are masochistic by nature. We've turned politicians into heroes. Political parties use freedom fighters who died 150 years ago as symbols. *This hero worship is another reason*. Another problem is democracy. This may be controversial but hear me out. Out of the countries you mentioned, *China and Korea are both authoritarian*, while Japan has a rigid societal system that makes its society one of the most disciplined in the world. *India's democracy is not like the West.* Remember, Democracy is a western system. It's designed for western society. India was at it's best when the Gupta Kings ruled. Todays Indian "democracy" is just a fake thing that exists to fill politicians pockets. Hence I believe that a very educated person, preferably with a modern outlook, should rule India as a authoritarian for 25-30 years. To quote the man who made Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew : *With a few exceptions, western democracy has provided no benefit to Asia.* Remember, this is the guy who advised China when it was poor.

Columbus and Vasco da Gama have their name in history just for reaching or trying to reach India. The man who wrote the Indian constitution did not belong to the meritocratic elite caste.

@@GrigRP not true because idea of india as one entity was first mentioned in ancient scriptures like puranas and Mahabharata which are nearly 2500 years old and that's reason you see pan Indian empires like Mauryas, guptas, mughals ruling over entire country as one entity and reason for their success was using one sanskrit language as administrative language and above all religion of Hinduism for which India is sacred as considered to be a mother. But just like China India was united 5 times and again split up into majority local Kingdoms infact when British were on it's soil 3/4th of India was under single maratha empire who first gave slogan of one India. And British never united India they left India with 570+ provinces as each own autonomous country giving them choice to be independent but it's our first home minister sardar Patel after independence used military force and united entire country and for that very reason you find world's biggest statue dedicated to him.

India is not the only country who was in economic shambles after WW2 (1947 is right after WW2) yet others have moved at a much faster pace than India... especially considering we were the biggest economic superpower. We very firstly need an education system with a more globalised standards... good sex/sports/art education, open to world philosophies, diversified topics and stricter examinations. every could at age 10 should be able to read a story in their own mother tongue... not just the kids in cities.

"Why is India poor?"- being an indian i've often asked wondered this question as well. How could we, a vast, resource rich, diverse, and relatively large literate and educated population, be so backward compared to our contemporaries in asia like China or japan? We didnt even have any major conflicts on our soil, or any major civil war, or have our cities flattened or anything like that. It is quite clear that despite many of our initial advantages, our leadership has squandered it. Though kudos to uploading this on independence day, this is a good wake up call for all of us.

However, Nepal continued to have its monarchs and prime ministers as before after 1816 as well . Somehow this questions a very straightforward and yet complex answer. Coming to the straightforward answer, corruption, laziness of ppl, lack of civic sense and socialist policies. India as a society need to pull up its socks and start working hard. No excuses. Now the complex answer, it’s not easy to govern india. India’s problem is very very unique - diversity. In no other country would you find such a diverse population. We Indians have hundreds of criteria to divide ourselves. Religion, caste, social classes, linguistic divisions, etc etc. you’d find cultures differing every few hundred kilometres. So making laws which won’t offend anyone and benefits everyone is quite a difficult task and enforcing it is even more difficult. You’d find someone protesting against every law. And this gives rise to votebank politics and appeasement politics for the sake of winning elections. You could give me the example of china, which was similar to india when we started, but you have to understand that china had to compromise on democratic values for the remarkable growth. Dissent is totally crushed there. The west, diversity has been encouraged once they have become rich and developed. And the immigrants are expected to follow the law of the land. India isn’t like that. That’s why it frustrated me when someone offers the china model or Japanese model of growth for india. No. India has unique problems, it requires unique solutions.

I would first ask you what gdp means. Second with that population its no surprise that indias gdp is higher. Look at the income inequality, if india is soooo rich why are there such huge gaps of income@@bharatmatakayoda

Fun fact: Poverty in India is based on less than 2.15$ which is 11% while in pakistan its based on 3.65$ which is 37% but 45% of Indians earn less than 3.65$ and only 10% of pakistan earn less than 2.15$ Source: list of countries by poverty rate Wikipedia

I read thru the comments, i realised most Indians cannot take criticism. Some facts are stated. And they just can't accept it. The keys to improvement? Education. Remove caste system. Unite with one language. Unite as a team, as a community, as a country. India has great minds. The next 20 years we will probably witness the rise of india.

Education? Ok Remove caste system? Hmm not gonna happen anytime soon. Btw fuck this caste system and reservation bullshit 🗿 Unite with one language? Never gonna happen with Hindi but with English it is possible To achieve the fourth point the right mindset and discipline should be needed which is not there and won't be 🤡

If India grows by just 5-6% per year it will have a gdp on par with the USA in 2050. India has historically grown faster than that on average for the past few decades, so its likely India is indeed on the rise, even with modest growth rates for a developing country
