Exactly- China is about as socialist as the US is capitalist. No country has ever been in the "ultimate form" of any ideology. Everything's a mix based on a given country's culture, history, and location.

@@BuddyLee23 Not at all true. There are many different conceptions of these ideas and you can go into enormous depth discussing these conceptions, but there is no reason to. These conceptions all have specific things in common which is why the words in question are even useful enough to keep using. Capitalism is an economic system defined by individual/private ownership of capital (among other assets). Socialism stands as the inverse of capitalism. Meaning that it is defined by it's lack of private or individual ownership of capital. In socialism, capital is not owned/controlled by individuals or small private groups, but is instead owned and operated *democratically*. You can go into an enormous rabbit hole discussing the many specific ways of doing this democratic ownership, but if workers control their place of work by default in their economic system, the economic system where the worker resides can be fairly called socialism. Communism is a bigger problem to neatly define because it isn't really an economic system like the previous two. Communism describes not only the economic system of the nation but also the society itself beyond the economy. The specifics of which are a rabbit hole in of themselves but there's no need to dive into that because there can be no (edited to add the word "no" here) good faith debate around whether any nation period has ever achieved communism because they simply have not. I honestly despise this sentiment of "oh they couldn't possibly define three words they're just too complicated only big brains like mine get it go read sixty books and maybe you'll understand." It poisons the well as much as people who say of any of these systems that they're evil in bad faith.

Most people don’t understand the difference. Capitalism is private ownership, so one person usually holding total control over his property and everyone who helps him. Socialism is cooperative ownership. Meaning a pure democracy, or a partnership type relationship towards property. Its owned collectively by the members who maintain and work it. Communism is one big collective cooperative, it’s basically when all people can agree to share and trade everything and abolish the use of money, government, class division etc. and live in harmony with one another.

@@Ruiseal Worker owned cooperatives Instead of being state-owned they're owned and controlled by the workers working in the enterprise in some way or another. It is considered a form of market socialism and most socialists describe it as cutting the middleman capitalist out of the equation altogether without changing market dynamics all that much. There are many cooperatives around the world, including places like the US so it's not really a ML or Maoist thing, just something co-opted by the left as a decent way of getting real economic power.

There are elections with multiple parties but if you step too far out of line the government will harrass you to drop out of the race. So its democratic but with many asterisks, though that couold be said of the US. They even have a lot of free spech at local government meetings where you can air your grevances but there are always limits. Vietnam opened up capitalism but also made it super easy to form a union, something neither Lenin nor Deng did. Their constitution states that in 2050 they are shifting to a classless stateless society after they build up their education and infrastructure as marx predicted. This should lead to some really interesting outcomes in the future. Their sconomic isolation from the rest of the world and their their ties to the US prior to us throwing them under the bus to the French is why they wewre able to maintain marxist purity unlike the stalinist style nations.

I think this video is relatively objective so thx for that, however I have lived in China for more than 10 years and there are a few things that I know are 100% wrong. As an example, (and I've seen so many misunderstandings of this), to clarify you CAN move from anywhere to anywhere in China, including from nowhere in Gansu to metro Shanghai, and you WILL have access to its public schools, jobs, resources etc. As a matter of fact, I went to a public middle/high school in Beijing and almost half of my class did not have a Beijing Hukou. The only difference is that you need to try harder and go through a bit more complicated procedure. It is like an ethnic majority competing for a job with a First Nation candidate, if all else equal, the job will be given to the latter. Another common mistake, is thinking that high speed rails connecting nowhere to nowhere are useless. You need to keep in mind that even the most remote towns in the country might host millions of people. Those cities you've never heard of are not NOWHERE. Additionally, it helps bridge the gap between remote (and often minority-populated) towns with the coast, and help these places develop economically. I realize that a lot of time people like criticizing stuff, but to be honest, likely nobody that watched this video has had any experience leading a 1.5-billion-people country, or even a 400-million-people country like America. There is no political or economical system that is "perfect", as long as it suits the mainstream culture, it's fine.

Agreed. High speed trains and transit between rural areas and wealthy coastal cities are crucial if you want to evenly distribute economic gains. It allows migrant workers and young students to access opportunities in more privileged areas while remitting money, resources, and trained workers back home. Eventually it develops bedroom cities, alleviates urban congestion, and gives rise to new economic centers

Some facts: 1. Working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week has been common in many Chinese private companies and enterprises, despite there are laws restricting 8 hours of working per day. 2. Ma Yun(Jack Ma), has been fined over 18 billion CNY (1dollar≈6CNY) for monopolizing the market in 2021. This guy, together with Ma Huateng (head of tencent), are the two most infamous entrepreneurs in China. (If you are interested in this part you can ask some video gamers around you, they could tell you what the f#%k have Tencent done to the game industry) 3. Some TV show companies are accused of SELLING Chinese cultural heritages and patents to other countries just for more profit. 4. House prices are becoming unreasonably high in most cities in China, thanks to the real estate agencies. Some of you may have thought that many Chinese cannot buy houses because of our massive population. No. We've got plenty of houses. They are just too expensive for us. (A joke in China: If you wanna buy a house in Shanghai, you have to work from the beginning of humanity to present) Many people hate my country because it is a Socialist state, but the true fact is that a lot of young people believe socialism is the only way to rescue them, because it is this 'invisible' capitalism which has caused most of the problems.

Facts. I'm happy to see that finally there is a mainstream youtube channel discussing the problem of whether China is still socialist. But the video is still somewhat superficial. For example, the leftist comebacks would be a lot more reasonable if the video could inform the audiences that during the recent years, the skyrocketing house prices, deteriorating worker's rights, increasing amount of billionaires and the inequality between the rich and poor had forced young people to reflect on the "glorious achievements“ of the open and reform, and seek for solutions from the Mao era.

Like, from an uninformed Westerners perspective, it seems like Mao is as responsible for China's State-Capitalist economy, as Deng or Xi Jinping. Did Mao build any substantial Democratic institutions that empowered the Chinese proletariat? Did he encourage Unions or Workers Councils? From where I sit, the biggest obstacle to the Chinese proletariat owning the means of production, is the Totalitarian Regime of the CCP.

@@caad5258 I agree that Mao isn't perfect, but after all he's the greatest socialist in China, and his name is respected, or even enshrined, throughout China. And China isn't really ready for Scandinavian Democratic socialism and whatnot, since these countries are far more rich in terms of GDP per capita and have much less people. Many people in China are actually seeing the cultural revolution period as more democratic than now, for people could openly criticize their bosses or even revisionist officials of the party, such as Liu Shaoqi or Deng Xiaoping. In some cases the factory was run entirely by workers as this documentary shows kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZezeHxsacqkd6s. Mao's CCP was still totalitarian, but people would find it much more appealing than modern day CCP because it actually championed the right of the workers, and claimed that the working class should lead everything.

There is a saying in China, 摸着石头过河, that translates to “cross the river by feeling the stones”. It is generally attributed to Deng Xiaoping, who used it as a metaphor to describe China’s approach towards the reform and opening (改革开放）which kicked off at the end of the 1970s.

I feel that a lot of people who criticise Chinese socialism do not understand this, though I myself am no expert. Compare Lenin: "The progressive historical role of capitalism may be summed up in two brief propositions: increase in the productive forces of social labour, and the socialisation of that labour." Marx himself acknowledged that this increase in productive forces was an essential step on the road to socialism. As long as China can be seen to keep one eye on the last few words of that quote, and - especially recently - I believe it can, then I will wish them all the best.

Moving within China doesn't result in losing access to public utilities. After like five minutes of googling, it's just a bunch of permit application-related processes, while the video made it seem like moving between towns is illegal. Not showing sources *in the video* for such strong claims is pretty bad for credibility, and going through the whole list of sources without any timestamps or pointers is just awful and gives the illusion of transparency

Yup. There are restrictions, but it's way more nuanced than what the video makes out. It's mostly to prevent large uncontrolled migrations to large cities like you see in LA, SF, and Seattle with large homeless populations everywhere. I got my hukou transferred with a 5 minute trip. Lierally no one over the age of 30 likely had a Shenzhen hukou when they were born.

It's not dumb, you're totally right, the total number has not that much meaning alone. I think the number of McDonald's restaurants per million citizens is much more meaningful. And in this metric China is very far off with their 2.5 McD's per 1M citizens. For comparison, Brazil has 4.92, Italy 10.59, Germany 18.56, Japan 22.93 and the USA, of course leading the chart (ignoring microstates with < 10 McD's), has 40.08 McDonald's restaurants per million citizens.

I watched the video on Nebula and I was wondering why would it be de-monetized. Then I found the "Advertiser-friendly content guidelines" for KZbin. Rules for "Shocking content", "Hateful & derogatory content", "Controversial issues", and "Sensitive events". None by itself would exactly flag the video, but a takedown would probably stand by mentioning those rules. It is sad that de-monetization acts as a pseudo-sensorship for KZbin. I guess it is intrinsic of ad-based platforms, not KZbins fault necessarily. But sad nonetheless.

It's only censorship for people that don't have the ability to every once in a while take the hit on producing something that makes less money. For those that have large staffs that help with producing the video, it becomes very hard to justify because there are a lot of mouths being fed from that advertising revenue, and the owner would have to dip deep into his pocket to pay their wages with content that wouldn't make much money. But what that tells you is that the owners are willing to compromise their integrity so long as they can earn more money. If anyone complains about demonetization, they're simply uninterested in making the best possible content, but only making money. I personally work a job much below what I might possibly earn, because it makes enough to pay the bills, I get treated with a lot of respect, and I never have to compromise my principles. That makes me much happier than having a larger investment portfolio.

@@stevenglowacki8576 It's still censorship in the sense that if a video gets age restricted/demonetized, it loses a large amount of the potential audience it can reach and it affects how they appear in recommendations. It's not an exaggeration to say a video can lose more than half of views it would normally receive due once it gets demonetized and age restricted. So if a channel's goals were to spread a message or educate to as large an audience as possible, even regardless of any monetary benefit, they would still need to cut content in order to stay with youtube's rules and not be restricted by the algorithms.

5:20 The archival footage early in the video ostensibly showing the death/funeral of Mao is actually not Mao, but Zhu De, Vice President, former General in the Red Army/PLA and part of the central ruling elite. Zhu De also died in 1976, so I suppose it's an easy mistake to make. Edit: Zhou Enlai also died in 1976. It was a real bad year for top CCP leaders.

Thank you for the fantastic video elaborating on this topic. I have had this hunch that China went through a whole decade of "Americanization" but decided to take a U-turn up to date. But I never had thought it through by figuring out how the party worked it through and made the turning compatible within itself. Simply put, in the past few decades, some people have been the beneficiaries of development. The government must pass reforms so that those groups who do not get the benefits enjoy the benefits. This video is disappointing because it only talks about the politics of the leadership and doesn't analyze the actual features of China's existing economic system. For example, it should have evaluated the market capitalization of state-owned enterprises, the size and scope of state capital and equity, the extent to which major firms are coordinated by industrial policies and planning, and the continued role (albeit in more indicative rather than directive) of strategic five-year plans in guiding overall economic development. The video could and should have talked about how, despite being mainly profit-driven entities, many large (majority state-owned) firms often pursue loss-making projects that end up enhancing the potential for growth in the long-term (building infrastructure in unprofitable poor areas, for example). I think the conclusion would be that, yes, China's economy is more socialist in the sense of "market socialism" (they actually call their system a socialist market economy) than many Westerners have been led to believe. But it is still a developing economy moving towards socialism, moving through a capitalist phase of development.

Socialism with Chinese characteristics means one thing, CPC wants the legitimacy to carry out the policies regardless of whether the policy is socialism or capitalism. what matters is not whether China is socialist or not. what matters is that China has a non-western political system and the system works, which can be a strong deny of the westcentrism and make CPC regain the legitimacy to run its policies. USSR's fall led to a consequence that all non-western (or more precisely, non-American) practices were at fault in some's thoughts (including some CPC members in charge) in China. It actually damages CPC's political independence, especially when China was in poor economic conditions.

The analysis in the video seems pretty shallow and I don't really see how this answers the very question in the title. I think it's right to point out how Chinese politics have evolved between the different leaders but again, the way that it has been discussed here (in terms of moving away from Maoism or getting back to it) doesn't say much about whether China is socialist or not. Especially because I think that while they have a capitalist approach to a lot of things that started with the opening up, the chinese state also take some decisions that are quite different from a obviously capitalist country like America (such as their crackdown on certain big corporations). Also, I think it would be interesting to define what exactly you mean by socialism if you're trying to say that China isn't it. Not that I think that China is socialist per se, I just think the video didn't really do a good job at explaining why it wouldn't be? Also, some concepts probably would need more explaining such as the hukou system and what the 5-year plans entail. So, in short, the video falls a bit flat to me, your other videos on China were way more cohesive as you were going deep into a specific issue and taking more time to explore what the issues is and what the consequences are.

Very important to understand that Socialism is a platform rather than one clear ideology. For example Adolf Hitler saw himself and his party as Socialists as Nationalist-Socialists or in today's wording as Socialism with German racial Characteristics, and so instead of order of society by economic-social standing as workers, farmers, land owners and so on, Hitler instead saw Socialist order by race, pure white Aryans as the top of society and different cultures or mixes of race below them until the bottom as people who do not have a home country or homeland which at the time were the Jewish people who of course did establish a country not long after the end of WW2 which just goes to show had stupid Socialism is. It was not “where your birthplace was all that matters and if you move you cant enjoy public benefits” It’s merely a record of your employment history associated with your work unit, or danwei in Chinese . Except China didn't get 800 million people out of poverty. All they did was lower their poverty line. These 800 million people live on less than $3 a day, while prices are only going up. This people are effectively even poorer than they were a few years ago. You can clearly see this if you travel outside of any 1st tier city. China is full of poor villages where people have dirt floors in their home. China's GDP per capita is lower than many African countries. The truth is only a select few people got really rich in China while the vast majority of people become poorer.

I do feel like the failure the mention the more progressive reformers of the 80s, i.e. Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang misrepresents the extent to which political reforms seemed viable in the 80s. The video also represents Deng's faction as pretty much the most reformist faction in the CCP in the 80s, which is definitely not the case.

Zhao/Hu was in Deng’s faction until late 1980s. Zhao was supposed to be Deng’s successor. So it is wrong for you to assume they are in separate faction. They are not.

Deng fear China would suffer the same fate, thus he grow more conservative on the political reform. But remained open on economic reform.

This video takes an illicit turn, I would of liked if you would of zoned in on some of Xi’s more socialist policies like cracking down on banks, billionaires, and big tech companies. You could of also gone into his more interesting family policies and the fact that Chinese apps have timers on them to ensure citizens aren’t on their phone too long. You showed GDP growth, but didn’t do much else to show any real significant data of value to your video. Just felt like this video was void of hard data and filled more with opinions/narratives

It's less about the color of the cat and more about who is that cat's owner? If it's the government, it's communism. If the cat is owned by a private company that is still run by the government, it is still communism. If the cat is owned by a private company, run by private personnel, who's assets, market value, and major business decisions are still determined by the government, it is STILL communism. So, no, it's not a semantics game, those "some people" in the U.S. know what has changed and what hasn't changed.

i think it's because he can't argue the main question very well, and instead goes over a list of fun facts which are interesting to hear but don't really add up to anything substantial. many of the weaker videos on this channel are like that. there are source dumps under the video but he doesn't link the sources with the claims so they are useless.

Let's be honest -- the Chinese KFC food is like 10X better then US KFC food -- the spicy chicken is like Popeyes on steroids. Plus they have those small egg tarts that are great as well. Also I recently watched a Chinese TV show where the gods in the show had a whole plotline about raising money to afford healthcare -- I can't imagine anything more capitalistic then that.

KFC, McDonalds are treated as mid-high class restaurants in China, while low in the US. The price is similar, yet restaurants are generally 1/4-1/6 as expensive as American ones
