We use these reels for 7 gill sharks, 100lb sturgeon and Las Arenas yellow tail. Drag isn't an issue, we have bent Gami hooks straight with this reel paired to an 808 Phoenix rod.

I've had an SX Magic Cast for 10 years now...Forest Green custom color. Looks gorgeous. This is an amazing all around reel and so simple to maintain in top working condition. I have never once found myself cursing for lack of drag strength and I have taken Atlantic Bluefish up to 20 pounds, Striped Bass up to 26 pounds, Summer Flounder (Fluke) up to about 10 pounds, Tautog up to 7 pounds, and even a 12 pound Mahi Mahi inshore. I usually spool it with Gamma brand copolymer line at 17lb test, but it's real break strength far exceeds the face value. Again, the Avet SX is no slouch at all and will land BIG fish. Just be realistic. If your going to stay inshore it take nearly anything to happen by your boat. If your going to blue water. of course you're going to want to bump up your reel to something more stout. I have an Avet JX for that purpose. It too has never failed me.

There is a solution to his ‘no drag pressure’ dilemma. It’s called ‘THUMB PRESSURE’.
@TheOutriderJ6 жыл бұрын
I had the same dilemma. I have had several chances to get one (in lefty), but the low drag keeps me from buying it. Instead, I'm going to save a bit more to get a Seigler SG (lefty). The Avet's are nice reels, but I may wait to try a gen 2 version before buying.

I took my SX apart and when I put it back together, It didn’t feel the same or work properly like it did when I first bought it. Sent it in to AVET and had them serviced the reel. It worked a lot better after it was serviced but the gears weren’t working like when it was new. Sold it on eBay afterwards. Never take apart a reel unless you know what you’re doing.
@scottaguirre75643 жыл бұрын
It’s mainly because the teeth wear pattern didn’t mesh back in the same way when you put it back in. Gears wear overtime and if your gears are worn, mark the teeth with a sharpie so when you put it back together, the teeth pattern are back in the original spot where it’s been wearing on before

I have personally landed a 75 pound bluefin tuna on the basic SX , surely they’re up to the task most anglers would encounter with them. Don’t let the numbers fool you. In practice, they’re exactly what they appear to be: A solid 50 lb. braid reel.
@kevinmeldrum14 жыл бұрын
I have an SX. 40# braid 30# leader, landed tuna 30-40# YFT, 30# YT and 50+# WSB. rule of 3rds 14# let's you fish up to 40#. Guess what the SX is a 40# reel.

People these days go crazy over drag numbers when the reality is it’s just a marketing scheme by companies. Nobody needs 30lbs of drag on a 20-30# outfit it just doesn’t make sense. I’ve caught 40lb amberjacks, 50lb cobia, King mackerel, etc. on the little SX with 30# braid. Also, IAR is very much prone to giving way, personally I won’t own a reel without a dog AR. I’d rather have the mechanical assurance. Great reel, and don’t forget the SX first generation is the most basic Avet out there and it’s still a Winch that’s caught triple digit tuna.

This is very true and the exact reason why i dont and will not ever spend the extra money of an Avet Raptor. Avet is a southern California company and their reels are built with southern California pelagic fish in mind. If you are fishing for calico, white sea bass and yellowtail which what the SX is intended for you are only using a 20-30lb top shot. Even at max drag you will snap your line.

Sorry to question your talk the raptor the drag not on both sides its traped between 2stainless plates any help needed please contact me
@PimpMyReel4 жыл бұрын
The Raptor series have a drag between steel plates on either side of the reel similar to Accurate Reels. That is why the Raptor Series Avet reels cannot be magged.

Stand by what I said - Review the newer reel. Seigler a great reel, but not $25 more - try $70 to 90 bucks. How many guys have worn out their Avet bearings? It is a workhorse beast. For an inshore reel what is the big deal between 20# to 30# drag? Not needed for the applications - If you got the $$ buy the Seigler. Pacer vs a Corvette? Please ... give me a break.
@thisfool894 жыл бұрын
When reviewing reels you have to keep in mind where they come from what fish they are intended on to target. Avet being a Southern California company has designed their reels with our local fish and pelagic game fish in mind. The SX and the JX (im pretty sure the JX is the next size up) are intded for inshore use. All of these fish are a bit line shy so we tend to use lighter line when targeting these fish usually being 20- 40lb line , so if your drag is set up correctly you would never really need more then 14lbs of drag or otherwise you will snap off your line or straighten hooks. The reel is so over built compared to the drag ratings because these reels are also meant to be investments. You buy this reel and with proper maintenance it should last you at minimum 5 years with very heavy use. With that being said i personally have moved away from Avet dud to the performance, durability and price point of the Penn Fathoms. Penn has really messed up the market for the rest of the manufacturers.
@PimpMyReel4 жыл бұрын
That is a good point. The Penn Fathom reel does ive a lot for the price and is an exceptionally good boat reel. I have a Penn Fathom 60 I use for Tope, Conger and Blue Shark
@thisfool894 жыл бұрын
@@PimpMyReel i literally just purchased my 5th Fathom. I have a 15 which makes for a great calico bass and yellow tail/ small tuna live bait reel, a 25n for bottom fishing, two 25n 2 speed one for surface iron jig casting and one for heavy iron yoyo jigging or medium sized tuna and lastly a 40 for the larger sized tuna. I plan to add the 60 to my collection as well for real big tuna and shark.

Far outdated in one year - do a new review of the G2 SX - just picked up one for $225 US on Ebay (no magnets - not worried about that) better drag @ 20 lbs and ratcheting lever - Hauling in stripers on it from kayak (great micro reel with great power, perfect for Kayak) - US New England.

You all really pay £250 for a Daiwa Saltist!? I could ship them across the pond to people for WAY less than that
@PimpMyReel6 жыл бұрын
Yes you could; then when the reel gets to UK customs there will be 3% import duty for fishing reels, 20% vat charge and around 5% handle fees. The shipping fees are added to the value of the reel first... It will actually works out more expensive than buying in the UK......This is to deter private importers That's why American reels like Avet, Accurate and Seigler are so expensive in the UK!!!
