Wow, a 98.8% rate, with only two viruses not being detected, but still removed, out of over 1300. That is actually a really great protection rate. I do wish you had also done the ransomware test with the File Shield ON, just to see how it worked. Also, how does this compare to Avast? And for those concerned about data sharing, you can go into the Settings, and under Privacy (I think), uncheck all the boxes connected with that.

Those annoying add can be turned off from settings>privacy. Just deselect all the box except for the first one. Desktop can also be protected by adding desktop in ransomware setting.

Hey Leo, Would it be possible when doing detection rates to also include some common false positives in the testing too? That would give a better indication of how good the signatures are and if they just block everything and get the user to release it all, which carries a higher risk of infection as a user will be conditioned to just click yes. Ideally, malex would be able to distinguish between malware and false positives and say for example, 100% malware blocked, 2% false positives blocked.

I use a combo of _AVG Free_ and the paid edition of _Malwarebytes Anti-Malware._ The two work well together. Fairly low footprint and seem to catch everything. Could do without AVG's in-your-face upselling tactics. Sometimes it's difficult to tell whether things are genuine alerts or AVG trying to get you to click buttons so they can suddenly charge you money for something.

Hm... I survived 2 months in hell... all started as Bit Defender suggestion after troyan attack via network, Zoom app on Win 10 pro or somewhere else... My experience was extremely negative as: after reinstalling Win, I’ve tried AVG. After deep scan - nothing is found, removed it and tried Bit Defender! Nothing but I noticed lots of interface similarities. Then removed it, rebooted, added Avast, scanned and now I was in paranoia mood! ALL 3 software looked like FAKE online framework, Antivirus “template” interface with totally the same layout, 90% the same colors and 2 of 3 tested antivirus programs, besides the same layout and functionality- 2 out of 3 had the only one 1 change: Icons above button names! Few days later I’ve found my whole cloud system was infected (fake antivirus was pretending to scan all hd file infecting them all!) and that kind of virus spread everywhere (all devices using the same cloud-based apps like: iCloud, MyDrive, MyCloud, GoogleDrive, DropBox) adding tons of python, java & xml atto-executed files replicating Windows, slowly “eating” shared archives and infecting png pictures / videos...!) It lasted 2 months, I bought Kaspersky, fight every day and night... suddenly all visible problems are gone after latest Win 10 Pro update, having everything enabled by default, Win Defender / Security and Win Edge few days ago...!!!??? Anybody had any similar experience or I was lucky to be traumatized by all possible vulnerabilities in Windows updates, iOS updates, Chrome free engine updates and even Android updates that lasted between one and two months, finding virtual server with scripts that generated me (among virtual machines and remote controlling my sys files!) thousands malicious xml and auto-exe. madness...? After what I survived (and how smart and deep those new viruses are, arriving as third party cookies transforming to troyans, malwares and even ransomware files...) I do not trust to anything... Even Microsoft Malicious tool found me 3 days ago a “virus responsible for disabling Win Defender autoupdates”... after all... Ah, I am tired... Those new smart malwares are capable of ruining everything auto activating randomly (sometimes the same day, sometimes few days later) and from - fake generated proxies that survives pc reboots... Even had power to fool ALL antiviruses, even Windows that new files are ok and legal as they had the power to make FAKE credentials.... That is all fixed by now (by latest Win update & Ms Edge)...!? What happened in past 50-60 days!?

I don't touch AVG anymore since long time ago, maybe 20 years ago or more, when I was a student and have no dedicated internet that time, only slow dial up 56 kbps, and my one and only "work computer" was ruined because false detection of viruses. Most of my application exes was deleted by AVG such as Adobe PDF Reader, MS Word, MS Excel, etc. I then search and found that AVG has released rescue program to overcome that false detection. But I was only a young boy and not an expert computer user that time, I gave up my desktop computer to the shop to repair it and I pay for it. I still remember that feelings, I remember that days, so sad.

I'm a kaspersky user, and in my pc,i don't see any slowness especially after kaspersky internet security 2019... I mean, in kaspersky 2020, it looks little more faster if compared to earlier versions, although earlier versions didn't have slowness in my pc either. But this may vary according to pc configurations,too. I mean if you have more RAM, better pc, (not old ones), you won't even see any slowness,i guess. But in old pcs it may make it little slower.. id recommend kaspersky if you dont have problems with it but if you do have problems with it like errors or it blocks ur connection then use Bitdefender free edition with Hitmanpro and kaspersky anti ransomware tool, best option. :)

Hi Leo, It appears you didn't protect the Shared folder from ransomware protection it got overlooked but it isn't a big deal you should have it back up so nothing really gets lost. The free AVG did a nice job overall.

None are the best but "Preferred" that I'd recommend would be Bitdefender(paid version), Kaspersky (Free is fine), Malwarebytes(free or paid version), Webroot (paid only). Those are the preferred I'd suggest. Also Some Alternative options you can try too. Spybot Search and Destroy, Emisoft, Norton. Stay away from McAfee and IOBITs antivirus. They suck! Protection that I'd compare as if using a rice paper condom..... Yes these are that bad!

AVG had a false positive on a file of mine a long time ago. It deleted it after prompting my mother to delete it (She didn't know any better about what it was deleting since she doesn't have much knowledge on pc's) and we had to go all the way to a reinstall disk and reinstall everything with that file it deleted. In short, I will never use AVG Pro again.

I just bought the full version to this which cleans up everything literally a week later as it's tracking things I got hacked again whilst on KZbin I ran a quick smart scan and they stopped it the person was trying to see my passed searches and AVG said it it was blocking potential threats hopefully it doesn't happen again

Avast Antivirus and is owned by AVG. Several years ago i cancelled Avast ,this year they tried to force me to pay for products I didnt order, Bank of America believed me gave me a different debit card number and reversed the charges. A month latter Wise Registry Cleaner slammed with their product and somehow they were able to charge my new debit card when I didnt give them numbers to the new card. I now limit purchases from the card to $10 a day when I'm not buying anything One possibility with WRC is that they are also owned by Avg or that Avg / Avast sold my debit card number to WRC Watch out for big business!
