Avi often harmonies with himself on his music. This is one of his original songs.

The guitar is a 1972 Gianinni, which was given to him by his uncle, and he had it restored. Gianinni is a Brazilian instrument maker founded in 1900. And the microphone is a model "Myrtle" from Ear Trumpet Labs in Portland OR.

Avi Kaplan, Classically trained Basso Profundo but has a 5+ octave range and also a Polyphonic/overtone singer. That means he can sing two notes at once. He wrote this song.

He has a huge vocal range and has said that when he was in PTX he only used 10% of his voice and now he only uses the super lows if they serve the song. He wrote this, as he writes almost all of the songs he records but to me, one of the hallmarks of a gifted songwriter is to be able to write a song that you immediately feel that you have always known. Avi's songs are like that. The pedal steel guitar features quite a lot on the 'Floating on a Dream' LP. I enjoyed your joint reaction - subscribed for more Avi!

My favorite singer/songwriter working today. His work is so clean and beautifully written, very ecclectic, and his voice is always used to support the song, not to do bass drops. I think the catalog of work he is creating will last for generations. Thank you for this wonderful reaction.

Avi is my favorite acapella artist, even out-ranking Tim Foust and Geoff from VoicePlay. Avi wrote most of his early solo works battling depression, so he speaks to my own battles. His music is earthy, folk, ballad and takes you where you never knew you wanted to go. So glad you are entering dream-land with the AviCrew. He is far more than a "low bass singer" as you will happily discover.😊
@5thgentexan95 Жыл бұрын
Yes Avi has Johnny Cash Vibes, but all his releases are original (minus two) just as all vocals are his. Avi is well rounded like JC and as smooth as Barry White. It’s difficult for bass singers to have solo careers bc most don’t have the range, talent or writing skills needed to be a successful solo artist. Avi has it all and was named one of the top ten best basses of all time - mostly based on his short three year solo career. Avi doesn’t fit into one genre, and he does make a point not to get boxed into one thing - whether it’s bass, a cappella, or otherwise. Avi is rediscovering his love for music and the world is a better place for it.

Avi doesn't always go for his amazing bass. His nuetral tone is so meditative and soothing to the soul. Like this one, he is writing phenomenal lyrics. Song For The Thankful All Is Well (duet), and Otherside - among others, show how beautiful he can be. I hear him every morning as his songs are my phone alarm, lulling me awake. 10 minutes later, FFDP or Citizen Soldier slams me out of bed.

As has been said, this song is an Avi original (about 90% of what he does now are originals, and he's been writing a new album). While his songs do layer his vocals, when he performs this and other songs live in concert, his backing musicians fill in the rest. For example, here's a link to a live performance of this very song from his November 30, 2022 show in Berkeley, California. You'll hear how it's modified very little for live performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3-0h5qVn9GtY9k

Its about his fight with anxiety. Ninja you are a natural! Great reaction. Avi said he's not going to use his low voice unless it's called for. This is an original recorded at Sunset Studio. I think he's an amazing talent with a 5 plus, almost six octave range. He's just beginning to let the reins go. I think we are gong to hear more amazing songs from him.. I'm going to expect to see you all the time Ninja. You guys are a great team!

Avi is my second favorite “lower register” singers. I love his song choices, and his voice control, yet he gets a somewhat nasal quality from time to time. Brother Tim, on the other hand, carries a full, chestier character, no matter where he places his voice.

Great reaction, thank you to both of you! I believe Avi covers five octaves, he goes low when it suits the song. This one is on his acclaimed “Floating on a dream” album. I’m glad that you have started exploring this phenomenal and dragon-loving artist’s music. When you next enter the dragon’s lair, I suggest you check out the sequel to “Change on the rise” called “I’m only getting started” (stunning B&W video). For some low notes, try listening to the impressive “When I’m a fool” from his EP “Live at Sunset Sound”. PS: It’s fun watching your almost synchronised facial expressions throughout the song😀

This is a wonderful song! I love his folksy sound! I will have to look it up and fill out my playlist. I love the two of you together trying to figure things out, and your reactions when you hear something you like. Just remember, you can’t truly compare all the bass voices, as they are all good in their own right. I love Tim too, but Avi and Geoff are best at what they do. More Avi please!

I only discovered Avi about 6 months ago, and was blown away by the sheer beauty of his voice. Most basses cannot maintain any sweetness of tone when they drop but Avi never loses it. At the same time, the very meditative style lends such weight to the lyrics but he's still able to give us a strength and declamation. This is a lovely song, too. Thanks a lot.

Great reaction another song that hasn't been suggested yet to explore Avi's beautiful lower register and range is Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair with Peter Hollens. It really showcases the difference between Avi and the rest as he actually sings really low not just hit low notes. The reason the song felt familiar is because his music is so relatable.

I subscribed today, because I saw you were watching, and enjoying, Avi Kaplan. I found his solo music in 2021, a little late to the party, but it meant I just had more to listen to. While I always considered bass singers enjoyable to listen to, Avi is the only singer that has a voice that gives me goose bumps, and can penetrates my soul. Add his amazing voice to incredible lyrics, and he fast became my favorite artist. Yes, this is Avi's original -- not a cover -- though now others are covering Avi. lol There are plenty of Avi songs that have that low bass sound, you are just beginning to hear his catalog. Avi has such a smooth, velvety tone that I can listen to an entire album and still want more.

That voice!!! Avi doesn't need to be just a low bass, his tone is amazing!
@ElizabethRoss-uj8rl Жыл бұрын
I like that Avi doesn't "go low" just because he can. Most melodies and lyrics work better in mid-range tones in the long run, with bass rumbles included only if the nature of the song needs it. The same is true of those really high descants. Avi has a beautiful mid-range voice, and I love to hear it. It was so nice to finally meet Gillian -- please come back often! Thoroughly enjoyed this reaction!

I'm a little late here but I'm pretty sure the guitar is a Vintage 1972 Giannini he probably got by his uncle. Avi is such a talented singer/songwriter/musician and his voice is beautiful. I've heard quite a few bass singers and I can safely say he has one the most stunning tone. Rounded, resonant but also gentle I must say. To clear up your doubt: this song is an original.
