There are several good basses, but Avi is the king of resonance. Warm, deep, rich, melted, buttery chocolate on a cold night sitting in front of a fire.

Way back when his Mom was on social media a bit she talked about how he wrote music and played coffee houses when he was a kid. One of his first songs was called Collision. It was about a car accident the family was in. They were in the middle of a multi car pile up and all were taken to the hospital. She said he wrote and performed that song as a catharsis for all of them and she cried every time he performed it. I often think back to that young man when I hear his music because it does carry that feeling of deep understanding. I saw a Vip where someone asked him about his music and his response brought tears, both to the audience and to his eyes. He said his aim was to give comfort and hope and awareness of all kinds of feelings a person might have. I think he does this in beautiful and surprising ways. Just love the body of work he's building.

While Avi was not raised attending Shul, he did go through his bar Mitzva. Avi has a difficult time memorizing unless there is music with it and there is that option in the bar mitzva so he flourished there. It was that rabbi who told the 13 year old Avi that he really had a great voice. He was in choir and summer between his 7th and 8th grade, his voice lowered and when he went back to school his choir friends noticed his much deeper voice and ran to tell their choral director she now had a bass. She was delighted. Here is a much younger (17) Avi Kaplan singing Oh Holy Night. It was recorded late in the performance but he had arranged it himself and it was also good! kzbin.info/www/bejne/raPVk4aFm6l4qpo

Avi had to reschedule his three Texas shows at the end of last year‘s tour, which happened to be in December. He and the band did this arrangement on the way to Texas and they only performed it in Dallas, Houston, and Austin. It was such an amazing surprise for all of us, especially because he hadn’t done any Christmas music since leaving PTX. I was having to hide the camera, but being that close to the speaker helped drown out the audience singing along. 😉 I love that he made this Texas version especially for the show, and I love how raw and earthy it is. It’s so different from the normal (sometimes screechy) high notes we usually hear, which makes it so calming! Absolutely love your reaction, and your voice (speaking and singing). Can’t wait to see more Avi reactions from you! ❤️🎄

I just Love this interpretation too, so beautiful & different from the 4:57 classic. I agree Avi's voice is a warm cashmere sweater. Great musical instruction, & perception of Avi's wisdom & presence. Absolutely beautiful performance from Avi. Thank you for this reaction - so informative, I really enjoyed it. 👏👏😍

As a singing coach yourself, you probably won't find it surprising that Avi still takes voice lessons, to hone his craft further and to strengthen his voice for the rigors of touring. He's also done lots of vocal coaching himself, most specifically at A Cappella Academy, the annual 10-day intensive vocal music camp for teens from around the world. He co-founded it in 2014 along with PTX producer/arranger Ben Bram and composer/arranger Rob Dietz, and every year the results are extraordinary. Here's a fun YT Short, where Avi shows off his bass class, doing "Hoist the Colors". As you listen, keep in mind that these young men are all under 18. kzbin.infobRcq_8DEZyc

Avi & Scott & Ben have been so great in passing on their talents to the youth! I find that very heart warming! 💖 And I know Kevin helped AcaPop Kids with beat boxing for both groups in the past.

Gorgeous! Avi is just extraordinary and unique. Love it! For a next reaction, I'd recommend song such as "All is well" (7 Layers) , "When I'am a fool" (Live at Sunset Sound) or "Quater past four (Avriel & the sequoias).

This was the first time Avi had performed "O Holy Night" in public since he performed his own arrangement of it at his high school Christmas talent show in 2006- when he was 17. Yes, he was arranging music at 17!. And the guitar he's playing here - a Breedlove -- is the same guitar he played back then. It was his first guitar (he'd worked at a roller skating rink in Visalia CA for a year to earn enough to buy it) and he still takes it on tour with him every time. He named it "Lady Love". Anyway, here's the audience video of that 17-year-old Avi singing "O Holy Night" and putting his own spin on it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/raPVk4aFm6l4qpo

You totally get Avi! For me, Avi's music always soothes, without thought my muscles relax and I breathe easier. As far as recommendations...it depends on your mood! For battle readiness: Change on the Rise. For serene beauty: Otherside. For a jam session: When I'm a Fool live at sunset sound . I could go on and on... Thanks for this wonderful reaction. Merry Christmas , cheers!

Wonderful reaction, thank you. I like to describe Avi’s voice as a soft blanket that wraps around you and keeps you warm and safe. For more songs to react to, I suggest “Otherside”, “First place I go”, and for some of those stunning low notes “When I’m a fool” from his EP “Avi Kaplan live at Sunset Sound”. Can’t wait for you next reaction to the wonder that is Avi Kaplan.

Ciao! 😊In the Christmas mood, here I am. One of the first performances that really impressed me was Pentatonix's rendition of "Silent Night" performed Live back in 2014. There's an Official Video for that. They all sounded stunning and Avi was just fantastic in there. Worth a listen for sure.

You really get Avi's music. I have always loved a good bass singer, but Avi's voice is different. I always just sum it up by saying that you don't just listen to Avi's music, you feel it.

Thanks! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4DCYmhmet5lsMksi=Py69i-UzKih2zEaK. You feel the same way about Avi's music as so many of us old fans do. I thought you might like some off the cuff treats we got from him before he came out solo. These things kept us all waiting eagerly to hear what he would do on his own. Hes gotten so much better but the promise was always there. I love this rendition of Wonderwall. Thanks for your reactions and I hope you enjoy these bits and pieces.

I am SO VERY HAPPY that you reacted to this beautiful recording by Avi! His voice just melts my soul! 💕 My hubby has a degree in classical guitar. He joined a Progressive Country band (they won a couple of Indie awards and topped charts in Europe) and they had an obviously different sound with him playing rhythm against an excellent lead player! The classical sounds he added into many songs gave them a sound that people recognized when they heard EG&WL! 💖

Its that still, centred presence that lends such intensity to his performance. His music comes from his heart and that authenticity is what makes his songs so memorable. If you haven't already done so, please listen to 'All is Well' 7Layers session. Another live performance, just Avi, his guitar and some stunning church acoustics. I would love to see your reaction to that! Subscribed in the hope you'll get to it.
