Alongside F104s the Draken was the planes of our national airforce when I was a kid. Back when supersonic over land was still allowed. I was, and still is, a big admire of them both. The 104s looked amazing flying only a couple of meters above ground, at high speed. And seeing the Drakens playing fighting over the lokal fjord.❤

Waow cool that he retracted the gear 5 metres over the ground and shut of the afterburner almost at the same time. Saving fuel I suppose. Otherwise you can watch the fuel gage moving... But in my view the 37 Viggen was even more before its time. The only fighter jet to have had radar lock on the SR-71 and with a top speed unknown to all, because it was still accelerating until it was out of fuel...
@terot8341
@terot8341 5 ай бұрын
I don't know if it's just rumor or true story, but they say Mig-21 had similar "problem", it never got real top speed because it run out fuel faster it could fly. And structural integrity couldn't handle more speed. True or false, it was a beast of its's time. Like Finnish pilots say, it goes like hell but nations borders aren't big enough to turn it around.
@perwestermark8920
@perwestermark8920 5 ай бұрын
@@terot8341I think the MiG-21 had a more "interesting" top speed. It could keep accelerating until it left the wings behind from overload.

It couldn't reach top speed in peace time as using up and dropping the drop tanks is not allowed in peacetime in Sweden making it impossible to test how fast it could have gone.

Unusual aircraft always leave an ever lasting impression. I just saw a Vulcan Bomber once in a lifetime, around 1978 when I was fourteen, on Final to Lisbon. I knew perfectly well what it was and started screaming alone in the middle of the street "A Vulcan! A Vulcan!" 😀 Everyone in the street around me stopped still, looking up wide mouthed. Fortunately there were no pigeons passing by. At the distance, I heard someone saying "It's the Concorde!" 😄

@@InTheAirWithPaul Thanks! Åke Anderberg was originally an old friend of my father, who also worked at Saab. But I also came to know him. Unfortunately, cancer took him from us to early. Åke Anderberg was a true genius. He started the work for supersonic flight in 1949 and had Saab build their supersonic wind tunnel according to his specifications/calculations. You know, in 1949, you could not go to the technical library and check out a book of "supersonic". Åke Anderberg had to start from basically scratch and first do the calculations. Thanks for your answer. PS His son Hannes was named after Hannes Alfvén, who Åke Anderberg was first assistant to at his time at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Hannes Alfvén was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1970. Very best greetings from Sweden!!!!

@@InTheAirWithPaul Ha ha! Sadly not. It survived a good many years, but as with so many from my extensive collection, it no doubt suffered some unfortunate accident or mishap and was eventually disposed of. But I have the happy memories of each and every kit I built. I learned a huge amount about aircraft design and detail from those models. It's a great instructional hobby and so much better I feel, than just computer gaming. I never saw the attraction of computer games. Somehow , it just doesn't tick the right boxes for me. When I was a child, sometime around the age 7-12 (1967-1972) my grandmother (dad’s mother) lived pretty close to F18, a fighter wing south of Stockholm. When the Draken jets swept over my grandmother’s huge garden, as they would land at F18 - I got scared every time. 😭 Not because they were fighter jets, but because they were so goddamn loud and flew approximately some 200-300 meters above me. Well, back then there was not a single requirement that the population close to F18 should live “in a quiet neighborhood”. Well, guess what. My other grandparents (mom’s parents) lived close to Sweden’s biggest commercial airport: Arlanda ESSA/ARN. There’s no surprise that I today love stuff that flies. 🤪

@@RB_2YCalm down, mate! Because the rest of the world who isn’t into military aviation, our “birds” are very foreign and exotic. Like the beast you where reaching for, they Gryphon (Gripen), half eagle and half lion. For us Swedes, the Airforce was the guys that would face the enemy first together with the Swedish Royal Navy. These guys was calculated to keep the Soviet hoard away for three days, because that was the time it would take to mobilize the whole conscripted army of 600-800 000 men. After that they would probably be gone. That’s why the Swedish fighter pilots flew like in war time, hard and sharp. Thus we lost 600 pilots during peace time! Crazy numbers, but that’s how it was.
