notice at 7:18 where they claim to simulate a 1 engine inoprative landing... But the instruments of the aircraft clearly show Both engines working at at the exact same thrust... -.-

Be advised that this is considered to be a "Simulated" 1 engine inop approach. For safety reasons, they keep the inop engine at a stable 40 - 50% N1. They don't idle the engine for precautions.
@dawidda
@dawidda 10 жыл бұрын
SottileSky ... They dont even do that, both engines opperate at same thrust 100% of the time. If both engines are fully operational and at the same thrust you are not simulating anything. in other words, it's a completlety normal landing.

They only set the "off" engine to idle to simulate it being out. At touchdown, both engines are at idle, as the N1 indicates on the display.

That's because the Capt and PNF didn't realize the PF was pulling back on the stick, (Which is what caused the stall) which at least the PNF would have with an interlocking control column, as the yoke would be pulled back into his lap. Then corrective measures, could have been taken, preventing the stall in the first place.

@rockfleet ya and Airbus was the first one to also implement the Fly-By wire system to commercial aircraft. the udea first became in the military and Airbus Picked it up, then Boeing improved it and Airbus is improving it again with the A350 to compete with this 787.

Technical question: In both 777 and 787, I've seen the centre ailerons first deflect down, then up, and then go back to its original position, all during the takeoff roll. What is the purpose of that?

2nd Officer was Pilot Flying, 1st Officer was in the Capt. seat as the Capt. had just arrived to the flight deck after rest. PF had his sidestick pulled back. Capt. and 1st officer couldn't figure out why the plane was loosing altitude, as with the A330, there aren't any visual cues i.e sidesticks don't move where as control columns do.

@oktal3700: Agreed, AF447 had everything to do with pilot response to a recoverable event (at several points), never meant to say otherwise. Just that it started with blocked pitots, which would still affect an analog asi. But in terms of 'redundancy' I'll bet that A330, properly configured could have recovered itSELFonce the pitots were clear - for sure it would not have fallen 30,000 feet belly first

Awesome machine, nice Video. Since I fly a jet which is a mixture of start-of-the-art-computer-technology and old school, I do share some concerns about developing manual flying skills with the new joiners in this profession. In my opinion, Pilot Training must be updated to care for the negative effects of higher levels of automation.
@theRealAV8r

What does display type/redundancy have to do with AF447? LOC incidents arising from pitot/static port issues transcend analog and digital equipped aircraft from either maker - ie rubbish data is rubbish data, regardless of display type.

Also the feedback control column as opposed to the sidestick. The pilot would have been aware that the co-pilot was pulling back and would have been able to correct him about pulling back. I don't know why airbus doesn't use feedback controls, it would probably eliminate confustion in the flight deck if the pilots could feel the action or visually see the action of the moving control as the other pilot controls the aircraft.

sir, what you said has nothing to do with control philosophy, airbus use a sidestick because every airbus after the a320 has an autotrim system. if that wasn't the case every airbus would be using yokes like the a300-a310.

It's a lovely plane to fly, no doubt about it, almost perfect. It's the first aircraft I flew that is not only fool proof but almost idiot proof ( I managed to fool it once)!However the EFB is cumbersome and not in the natural scan. Using our Airline iPad was much easier. Shame Boeing /FAA felt it necessary to make it the same as the 777 for pilot common rating. Look at the A350 where the screen is for charts etc. However felt so privileged to have started on the B737-200 ,757, 767 and finished my career on the B787 .... The ice on the cake would be if the screens were touch sensitive ....

This is a great comment to see. Got a question for you. When it comes to the hydraulics, is it true that the 787 can still be controlled if were to have all 3 of it's hydraulic systems failed via the Electro Mechanical Actuators that operates 2 pair of spoilers per wing and the horizontal stabilizer without hydraulics needed?
@markbradley2367
@markbradley2367 Жыл бұрын
@CoasterGuy787 Yes, you are correct ( but retired in 2019, so memory is slightly fuzzy), though I wouldn't like to try it! Depending on the nature of the hydraulic failure, if there was still hydraulic fluid available, then the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) could be deployed to power one of the hydraulic systems.(can't recall which system) These multiple failures would be extremely unlikely and if it did happen it would be one of those days you should have stayed in bed!
@ClaysonAntoons

@@markbradley2367 Thanks for the reply. One more question if you don't mind. I'm aware the 787 uses roll rate in normal mode like a FBW Airbus and that there is artificial force feedback for the pitch axis. Is there any for the roll axis also, despite the use of roll rate? If you was to be flying manually in gusty winds and the 787 rolled, would you feel that through the yoke via artificial feel? I'm curious as I'm fascinated by the 787's design since it's among my top 3 favorite Boeing aircraft.
@markbradley2367
@markbradley2367 Жыл бұрын
@CoasterGuy787 you are really pushing my memory now:)) In roll once you banked more than 45° (I think)then stick forces increased to try and prevent you overbanking , although when practicing unusual attitudes in the simulator you could,with muscle override it ! From a pilot perspective, it felt in roll no different to the 767 I flew before, even flying a very gusty 40kt crosswind it behaved beautifully. I must qualify that I am not a test pilot, so wouldn't have the skills to differentiate small differences between types, though the 757 was much heavier in pitch .

You people do not seem to understand that all new major aircraft experiences "childhood diseases" It's like that with all new machines, cars, planes you name it. Boeing is not alone with this and certainly not the 787. Just think of the Airbus A380 which was delayed 2years. Cracks was discovered in the wing structure and an engine failure on a Qantas A380 which was caused by an oil leak. And it still does not make the A380 a bad plane.

Because it's completely against any stall recovery procedures, the Capt, and the PNF, probably wouldn't even think the PF would be pulling back on the stick in that situation, hence the confusion. Had they had a interconnected control column, they would have seen the mistake earlier, and most likely reacted sooner, and save the plane!!
@rockfleet
@rockfleet 12 жыл бұрын
Airbus "invented" the glass cockpit with 2 crew only, Boeing took it over and improved, Airbus improved things again. The fact of the matter is that competion is healthy and because of it both have been producing better and safer and more economical planes. Current demand is so high that no single manufacturer could take-up the slack.

Yes but because of the severe icing the Air Data computer had reverted to what is known as Alternate Law. This shut down the protections that are provided by the airplane The pilot, who was unaware that this was possible, was able to stall the airplane. At least that is my understanding of what happened

I flew the B767 till I retired in 2000. To me that may have been the last plane that made it easy to shut off the electronics and hand fly an approach and also to fly engine out approaches and go-arounds in the simulator. The 787 is a magnificent plane but when the parameters of the computer are exceeded or the computers fail you have to have stick and rudder skills to fall back on. We are already seeing accidents where the pilots are defaulting to the computer such as the Asiana SFO accident.

+Blake Tibbitts It would have, because the crew were unaware of the situation they were in, and had very poor CRM, not knowing who was in control when a simple "I have control" would have been sufficient. They were over-reliant on the automation and when they were given full control after the autopilot disconnected, they didn't know what to do. When you have airline crew that cannot recognise and recover from a stall can you really blame the machine? Remember, a bad workman always blames his tools.

Its actually dangerous to rely primarily on a bunch of computers, when pilots do the minimum. Computers are computers, if something goes wrong, pilots are literary " blind". Even my new pc shuts down sometimes with no apparent reason. Plus 787 appears to have a common lithium ion battery problems still.
