Another impressive Soviet aircraft - the WW2 era Yak-3

This video highlights the first Yakovlev Yak-3 fighter to fly in New Zealand, almost a decade ago. Now for sale this aircraft has delighted fans at airshows up and down the length of New Zealand's South Island.

Amazing aircraft

Have never seen any documentation that the Yak-3 was armed (beyond the nose cannon) with two 7.6mm MGs (which, in theory, would have been an option) and one 20mm cannon in each wing. The standard armament was a 20mm cannon in the nose and two 12.7mm fring through the prop. Other varients existed but the weaponry remainded centermounted. Any publication on the Yakolev fighters would underline this. That being said, I loved seeing her fly, great footage. (This is a reupload from the other video from 2014?)

I'm pretty sure that was a mistake or two. As he said the earlier Yaks had wooden wings but the Yak 3 had metal wings and didn't have problems with wooden panels coming off in fast dives. Also the Yak3P had the two machine guns upgraded with 20mm cannon. There were never any with canons in the wings

This particular Yak 3 has wooden wings, as the whole world saw when it ripped one of them off when it hit a cherry picker parked in the wrong place at Warbirds Over Wanaka 2018. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nauTaIRretmsoMU

Beautiful aircraft, it's been said the Yak3 could outmanuever both the Spitfire & Mustang below 15,000 ft. Armament stats seem a bit sketchy here. Since virtually all remaining Yak3s use Allison V1710 engines, which could easily be turned into a counter clockwise rotation like the original Russian Klimov V12, why no one has done this, as far as I know.

Its maneuverability was up there with the Japanese Mitsubishi zero, and basically nothing else touched it.

my 3d printer is actualy doing this fine Airplane as a scale 1:32 Model. I will do this twice for the second i want to conversion it to the Steadfast Airracer with the Starmotor equiped. realy like the ww II planes in form as airracers like in reno or else

Cheap (relatively) way to get into Warbirds ownership.. at around £300,000 compared to an equivalent Hurricane/Spitfire/Mustang at £1.8 million..

Didn't need to. With the original Klimov V12 engine, below 15,000 feet, it could out-perform any Luftwaffe fighter. There are pilots who believe that it was also superior to the Spitfire. With the Klimov no longer available, the aircraft we see flying today are powered by Allisons. Fitting them with Merlins would add little or nothing to the performance of what, for most of them, are display aircraft. Some race at Reno, powered by Allisons.

The original Russian engines are no longer available, so the Yaks are all fitted with Allisons.
