Martin, I am so happy that I subscribed to a man who is into prop planes. Cape air sadly doesn't have Bonanza airplanes but they have Beechcraft planes. It's a source of history of flying. Your channel in a way takes us back to the days before jet airplanes weren't even thought of yet.

I, too, have taken the leap and decided to upgrade my GNS530W with the IFD540. I like your 3 reasons for upgrading and agree, whole-heartedly. I’d like to mention that the Avidyne product is just as superior at 25-30% less the cost compared to their Garmin competitor. Thanks Martin and safe travels!

Martin, I also swapped my old Garmin 530 (non-WAAS) for an IFD-540, and added an NGT9000, and I really love them both. The I-pad connectivity and all the great features in the 540 have been a great improvement - of course, even after a year, I'm probably using 20% of the capabilities, so I need to dig into the manuals. The frequency ID feature is great. Also, they way the IFD intuitively predicts (or anticipates is probably more accurate) the waypoints your entering - that's amazing. I think a lot of us are switching to Avydine because this is a relatively easy swap (labor cost-wise), but adds so much capability and additional safety. Another great video.

Last fall and winter I replaced most of my panel (C-210L) with the JPI 930 engine monitor, the Avidyne 550 and 440 as well as the Aspen Evolution Pro 1000 as my PFD. With so many new instruments I had my avionics shop create a whole new panel to place everything in their most optimal position for my tastes. I added the Skytrax 100 UAT receiver, the Avidyne AXP340, an STEC 30 autopilot, and PSE’s PMA450a stereo audio panel. What a joy to fly! Also, it helps as I’m working on my IFR ticket. Less workload. As far as databases, I use a separate USB stick: one I plug into the 550 and one I for the 440. Once I power up the IFDs it only takes about 5 minutes to load all the databases. Not having used any digital devices before (except iPad), the learning curve hasn’t been really very hard at all! I do use Seattle Avionics’ FlyQ EFB, and there are some issues with transferring flight plan data, as Slingshot is not supported. Other than that, using the IFD’s wireless capabilities (either WiFi or Bt) to get weather radar and traffic on the iPad is seamless!

Roger, that sounds like a very nice setup for your panel. I'm thinking an Aspen or Dynon might be in my future as well at some point, and then I may very well get a new piece of metal for a good-looking panel, like you did. - Martin

Good luck with the Avidyne units, they certainly do pack in some great features. We have seen quite a few reliability issues with them over here (Australia). Quite a few aircraft have had multiple units replaced due to things like screens failing. When they are working, pilots seem to love them. Most of the engineers I know dont like them at all.

Martin, we recently installed a IFD 440 in our Mooney. The UTC time is showing correct, but the ETA is wrong. The estimated time enroute is correct. Can’t seem to find this answer how how to fix. If you are able to answer that would be great.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 3 жыл бұрын
I assume the ETA is displayed as a local time, not UTC? If so, you probably need to adjust the "Local Time Offset" in your user options. Look for that term in the pilot guide, and you will find the following: HH:MM - push in bottom right IFD knob to put into edit mode then twist the inner ring to change in 15 minute increments and then push knob again to exit edit mode Note: Local time is a user specified offset from UTC rather than an automatically calculated offset based on current location. This should be manually readjusted if crossing time zones.

@martinpauly

Hi Kevin, I hard-wired the Lynx's ADS-B output into the IFD550, specifically so I wouldn't have to deal with two different WIFI sources. My iPad connects to the IFDs WIFI only, and gets ADS-B data through the IFD. That setup has been rock-solid. Regards, Martin

The GNS 430 and 530 will do flight plan transfer, and display adsb information (weather and traffic). They will also tune frequencies. Plus, after removing and reinstalling the transponder, you need to have another 91.413 appendix f test completed to legally use the transponder again.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth, do you have a reference for the 91.413 check after re-seating a previously checked transponder in its tray? I know it's not something I can do as an owner, but I can't find a requirement for a full recert under our conditions. Thanks, Martin
@jimkeeth5120
@jimkeeth5120 5 жыл бұрын
It’s actually 91.411 and Part 43 appendix E. Back in the days of grey (Gillham) code altitude it made sense. With serial altitude the chance of having erroneous altitude is unlikely because the altitude is coming through on one wire instead of 10+ wires with grey code.
@sethmiller8318
@sethmiller8318 5 жыл бұрын
@@martinpauly first I will apologize for my post after reading it, I sound blunt. I also miss typed, as Jim below says, 91.413 tell you you need the test done, Part 43 appendix e tells you how to do the test. If you look at 91.413 (b) it tells you following any maintenance to a transponder where error could be introduced, then the test is required. Removing and reinstalling it could cause a failure if the connectors don't seat all of the way, or a pin gets bent. As Jim says, it is unlikely with serial transponders these days, but the only way to be sure everything is working as it should is to test it. I love watching our videos and I am thinking about starting to record some of my flying as well. I have a young son that I hope one day would go through them and watch them.

Martin, you will need one additional wire for audio. 99% of 530 installations did not have audio connected, unless TAWS was installed as well. The IFD has a number of audio alerts, including chime for TOD, terrain warnings, and 500ft altitude callout.

@martinpauly
@martinpauly 5 жыл бұрын
Hallo Erik, schoen von Dir zu hoeren. I tried to answer this question in the video. When it's all done and complete, I won't use the Lynx WIFI anymore. The Lynx will send weather and traffic information via RS232 (i.e. a physical wire) to the IFD, and the IFD will not just display this weather and traffic data but also relay it to an iPad via WIFI. So the IFD WIFI will be the only wireless network I will use. Herzliche Gruesse, Martin

Hi Gwen, the first update did indeed take quite long - about an hour for the IFD550, because of the huge terrain database. The rest of the data was much smaller, so since terrain isn't normally updated, I don't think it'll take long at all next time. - Martin

Martin, since you brought up Kris, and doing a joint presentation with him at OSH, I was wondering if he was the one who turned you onto the IFDs. :p :) I know he certainly likes his in the Baron. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. I only have one question for you. I don't see why not, since the IFDs are pin compatible with the GNS units. Is your Bonanza going to get a G3X Touch display? I asked Kris when he was over at Avidyne if they were coming out with a replacement display similar to the G3X, but of course, he couldn't answer that, even if he knew. Still, a glass display in your cockpit to go with the EDM-930 and the new IFDs would be the ising on the cake!

Your aircraft has more technology than the 767 I fly.

Yes, I believe that. All I'm missing is an EFIS (e.g. Aspen, G500, or Dynon) and I'll have a nicer glass cockpit than most airlines - though without the redundancy you guys have in the large aircraft. Regards, Martin

@@martinpauly What happens if the power dies? Your nice glass cockpit might not show you a lot for very long. I am to cautious, I would like both glass and analogue in there. The very basics anyway, show you if you are the right way up and height from the ground, though it is nice to see if you are on the glide path by flying through the boxes. Does your equipment show you coming into the runway even if it is fog outside? Ignore me, I am just jealous, I don't even have a plane to fit it all to. lol

Does anyone know the root cause of WiFi unreliability in the IFD550? Which embedded OS does this run? Which SOC does it have? Is the WiFi antenna internal or external? Is there a method to verify that the RS232 capstone data continues to flow even after the WiFi goes down?

I am still a student, so if my question seems uninformed it is. Does the iPad need to be connected to a service such as verizon or At&t, or can it stand on its own? I am assuming the GPS iPads that are not wifi only.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 3 жыл бұрын
The iPad does not need an internet connection in flight. It receives GPS position as well as ADS-B traffic and weather through the WIFI provided by the Avidyne IFD. That's all the updates it needs in flight. Regards, Martin

Hey Martin I am in the market for a gnat 430w or 530 if the price is right, let me know if still available
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking, but I'm afraid I had to trade in the 430W and 530W when I got the Avidyne IFDs. I see GNS units on the used market quite often; hopefully you'll find a good one for a good price. - Martin

That is a lovely set up, mate. How much would a set up like that cost? Do I need to sit down?

Hi Simon, hard to give even a ballpark number that’s accurate for every case, especially if you have trade-in units like I did. I suggest calling shops (avionicssource.com) and get some quotes. - Martin

It's a simple and reliable interface that can be implemented with as few as three conductors (two, if you only need to send data in one direction). It's still useful if you don't need high speeds. It actually dates back to 1960.

I get what you mean, Peter, but still - to afford my flying "addiction", I have to make some trades. I drive an old car, I have a small house... So while some money is available for flying and for keeping the Bonanza in good shape, I have to watch my spend. Regards, Martin
