Ha ha!! Yes, very true. When I actually get the truck on the road full time. New tires are first on the list.

Hi, Cory. Ref. Removing the cotter key, I straighten it out as much as possible then use a pair of side cutters to grip the looped end of the key and lever up against the hub nut. Once you’ve levered so far, move the side cutters down the shaft of the cotter key and lever up again. Works every time for me, unless of course the cotter key is rusted into its hole, that’s a whole other story. Great video, Cory.

Thank you Sir! Excellent process!! Use leverage to your advantage. Cotter pins are such a pain in the butt!!

Cory, to stop the paper gaskets from leaking you only need to smear them with grease before you fit them...this helps them stay in place during assembly and usually keeps them leak free.....also the spongy seal on the end of the driveshaft benefits from being soaked in gear oil before fitting to help them stay fairly leak free

Oh Man!! I completely forgot about putting a coat grease on the gaskets. That’s an excellent suggestion. I’ll have to pull them back off to fix the leaking.

And if you grease paper gaskets you can usually re use them. I do the same with the valve cover gasket. I use sealant on one side and grease on the other.

Great video Cory! Im about to order the AVM405's for my Series 2A. Thanks for taking the time to make this, it's really going to help me install mine.

Hi Cory, I have the older style AVM's fitted on mine. The internals are quite different! These look a lot simpler to fit, no lining up of clocking pins and grease everywhere! The maths says that you should see an increase of 7% in power, or a corresponding fuel saving, but I imagine there are other factors. Thanks for the video!

Right! I thought these would be a little more difficult. Excellent percentages. I would agree with the 7% increase. Seems correct for the old butt dyno!! Ha ha!!

I don't understand why the shaft turned freely when you were tightening up the castle-nut. Not if you were in gear and in 4WD, and the other wheel was on the ground (and locked, if you had the other FWH already fitted). The FWH disconnects the shaft from the wheel, not the shaft from the driveline. I think you must have had it in neutral, or the other front wheel was jacked up, or it was in 2WD, or the other FWH was unlocked.

@@TheSwordsmon excellent question. The center diff is an open diff. So each wheel is free to spin if the other 3 are stopped. That’s why it’s free to spin any time. Example: when you’re trying to drive over an obstacle and 1 wheel keeps spinning because it has no grip. It’s the same concept. Thank you for watching.

@@conrad1468 No, you can't jack up a single wheel and spin it, if the vehicle is in gear and in 4WD (even if there were a centre diff, but there isn't in a Series LR). If you spin a single wheel while in gear, either the engine must turn, or another wheel has to turn (in the opposite direction). Picture what was happening while you were tightening the nut: the shaft was turning, so something in the diff was turning - either the crownwheel and propshaft was turning, or the planetary gears were turning the other shaft in the reverse direction, right? It couldn't be the other shaft if that wheel was on the ground (with a locked FWH, and if the shaft was in place, of course). And it couldn't be the C/W and propshaft if both gearboxes were in gear and the T-case was in 4WD. So one of the following was the issue: Not in 4WD, not in gear in both boxes, other hub was unlocked, other wheel was jacked up, or other shaft was out.

Note, Cory. Defenders are permanent 4x4...they don't use free wheeling hubs... 🤝🏻🇿🇦
