Sam is an amazing guy, full of knowledge and a genuine, kind and gentle soul. I am proud to call him friend. On Girling, cut the outer bark to the cambium layer, (hard wood). Only do it on healthy trees as it will stress the branch and tree you cut in to. I*t is best I have found to do a complete circle, I have experimented with spirals and they are not as effective. I use saws all blades and determine the coarseness of the teeth by the age of the tree, fine teeth on younger limbs, and coercer teeth on older limbs. It is important you clean out the cut so that there is no sawdust to heal the cut too soon. Don't girdle more than 25% of the tree, but I sometimes do up to 75% if I am taking out that orchard in the fallowing year. This is a normally practice in my operation, I only girdle Hass. Though I am experimenting with GEM, with no conclusive evidence that it helps there.

can i girdle the trunk so the whole tree is girdled or does it have to be on branches

Hey Greg, yeah, I’ve never girdled. I’m kind scared to do it bc I might kill the whole branch. Do you cut around the whole circumference of the branch to an equal depth going only partly through the cambium layer? Or, do you cut all the way through the cambium layer but NOT completely around the circumference of the branch. I have plenty more to learn on this. Thanks for the video.
