Thanks for sharing, Greg. Next time you girdle the branch, can you make a detailed video?

Do you use a knife or box cutter for the girdling?

will the food produced in the ungirdled side go to girdled side to nourrish the fruit production? 🤔

Not certain, but I'd guess yes because the tree works as a whole system and after the girdling, that girdled limb continues to receive water and nutrients through its core (xylem), which come from the roots and other parts of the tree.

that is awesome, do you have to girdle every year or will the tree automatically do that by itsself, cant wait to do my sirprise trees, get them off the same cycle

Hi Greg it sounds like you have interrupted that trees natural alternate year bearing so that each half is out of sync. My question is how long will this effect last. Do you really need to girdle it every year or will the natural cycle of heavy then light fruit set continue until something makes them sync up again?

Good question. My guess is that the effect would last for at least a few years, but what might interrupt it is any significant pruning. If you are doing rejuvenative pruning in order to keep a tree small, then you would have new limbs that you need to "get on the program," so to speak.

Great video. I have a hass that’s about 5 years old and it’s only about 5 years old. Has flowered a few times, but hasn’t sweet fruit yet. Any recommendations on what I need to do? Do I need to fertilize it and prune a specified time out of the year to encourage growth and flowering? Thank you!

Five years is around the time that it should be fruiting. It might need one more year, or there might be a problem with too much shade or a rootstock that is encouraging late bearing.

Cool you're so close to me. I don't do tours, but I do sometimes sell avocados through my website: gregalder.com/yardposts/

Hello Greg, I was wondering if you have or know someone that has tried to graft a Hass or similar on a west Indian rootstock with success. For I live on the coast of the Yucatan where there are all west Indian. I have aquired a small hass tree(not many) branches. I would like to graft (to back it up Incase it dies) on west Indian but a little hesitant.

Yes, there is no problem with graft compatibility between Hass and varieties that are considered "West Indian." I only have two such trees, but I know of whole farms of such trees.

could this be used on a seedling tree to flower earlier than it otherwise would?

Yes, that's another common use of girdling.
