I tried growing seedling and then grafting a fruit bearing variety but it got burned due to watering method I didn’t keep up with flooding method. What is best place to buy already grafted young trees for so cal planting?

Hi. I live nearby in Mission Viejo. Would it be too much of an ask for the coordinates of this tree?
@user-rs9hl4mw7u3 күн бұрын
Non-grafted fruit trees will not bear the exact fruit as the tree from which the seed came. It may not bear at all-a sterile tree. But generally, avocados bear heavily every other year, and then lightly the next. Further, this time of year, the fruit would be pea-sized. Come back at Christmas and check it again at that time, when the fruit is large mature. Never-the-less, a very cool find. Thank you.

More than likely grown from a pit , thats why its got no fruit .. Its good for shade and nothing more .. Looks like a fuerte ...

I bet the farmer was eating avocados under the orange tree and threw the pits on the ground and this one sprouted and survived because it was the most drought tolerant! Pretty cool.
@lawngevity32954 күн бұрын
How did it survive considering how much water avocado trees need, especially early on?

That's one beautiful Avocado tree. Almost looks like it's growing in its native habitat. A tree of that size should have way more fruit. Looks about as productive as my "Drone" 4 year old Fuerte.

Lots of giant avocado seedlings trees up in NorCal especially in the foothills east of Sacramento Central Valley. Definitely gets lots more rainfall but they also survive without any irrigation and live through the triple digit summers without any problems

wow what an amazing find. I think seedling also based on no graft line but also it looks like it shot straight up like a seedling. Maybe girdle a branch next time you are there to see if it provokes fruit set.

Does anyone else find themselves looking for avocados trees while driving around?
@econ00039 күн бұрын
Yes, I look for them in my neighborhood on walks or on drives. There aren't many in my neighborhood but there is one similar to the tree in this video. I am tempted to knock on the neighbors door to ask about the tree.

Ya with water tree might be loaded with fruit , but who knows how good of fruit being a seedling , very cool I hope tree will never be cut down to build homes.

Unfortunately that seems to be the fate of most of the old giant avocado trees. I grew up with a huge avocado tree and my father cut it down and burned the stump to finish it off
@MrEdwinhardesty9 күн бұрын
All it needs is water and the tree would be packed with fruit.

Very cool tree, with a cool story, I wonder if pollination is affected because it’s so close to the citrus? I know my bees prefer the citrus flowers over the avocado.

Yes, I have. Yes, I would. While I also like Satsumas (including Owari) and the varieties sold as "Cuties," I like Gold Nuggets better.

The Bacon was named not for its flavor but for James Bacon who originally cultivated this popular avocado in California in 1954. What if an avocado were called "Big Seed and Kind of Watery"? I don't mind the fibers in avocados. What I don't appreciate are the massive zones of gray flesh in supermarket avocados from overseas on sale!

After years, a Hass didn't make it. But the rootstock is growing. I told my sister it might be a Zutano, which sounds like a pretty cool tree.

I read an article years ago that a small tree in general will catch up with a large tree following transplant. In other words, that $500 tree (assuming it lives) will do no better in the long run! But you do get that one fruit.

I was told that Nabal produces bad tasting fruit in Florida so it should be grown in California. I'm going to prove that concept wrong. Guatemala should be more like Florida than California.

Thanks for the video. I have some questions. The first is: Is simultaneous cross-pollination more efficient between two different verieties of avocado trees in the same field? Or can it also be done efficiently between trees of the same verieties? Which one is better? . Second: If it were better for simultaneous cross-pollination between two different verieties of avocado trees, which veriety would you prefer as the veriety that blooms simultaneously as a male and the Haas veriety as a female? Third: If we have a field with 100 trees totally, what is the appropriate number of male trees that correspond to the appropriate number of female trees or rather what is the ratio between them? What is the optimal distribution map for the distribution of those 100 trees in the field? Thank you very much in advance.
@gregalderdotcom14 күн бұрын
Most of those questions are answered here: gregalder.com/yardposts/cross-pollination-of-avocados-or-why-i-planted-a-hass-next-to-a-fuerte/ Also see this post: gregalder.com/yardposts/all-about-avocado-pollination/ Most avocado growers who plant pollenizers (B-type avocados) for Hass plant about 10 percent, and they do so in an arrangement such that every Hass tree has a side that is adjacent to a pollenizer tree. But not all growers do this.

The size reminds me of an avocado trees fruit we had a s a child. We lived just down the street from Disney Land. Its still there today. I can see it on Google maps. Anyway it has nice large fruit with creamy oily flavor. I believe it was a Anaheim variety medium green color semi smooth skin. My dad would fill banana boxes and sell to nearby restaurants. It was a big tree and picking the top fruit was a challenge. Ill have to go by and grab a couple grafts from it sometime.

My cat used to leave us presents of gopher heads, weasel heads, and rabbit heads on the steps by side door. The only time we had mice in the house is when he brought one inside to play with until it didn't move any more.
