Nice video! Like you, I’m also on an avocado journey. I’ve recently had my first success with grafting, so for now, things are going really well. What started as growling from pit in jar and water has morphed to 15 in ground, grafted trees, to a shade structure with many grafted seedlings. The passion is real!LOL! Keep doing it- pretty awesome!

A good indicator that it could be a Fuerte tree is red speckles on the new green branches. If it doesn't have the red speckles then it isn't a Fuerte. There are some other avocado trees like Sharwil that have red speckles too but most varieties do not.

@@growyourownavocados Yes i’m sure you can! It doesn’t get hot where I am, maybe like 7 days out of the year we’ll be over 90 and it’s mostly in the 75-83 range here with morning fog as well. My neighbor has a huge mexicola grande avocado and my other neighbor has a regular hass.

05:46 The various avocado videos all seem to agree that Bacon is a fast grower, good producer, has some cold tolerance. I see some nitpicks of the fruit, that it does not peel easily. But I got one on a gamble. I kept it alive in a container through a moderate North Carolina winter, using a cover and leaving it in a warm corner beside my house.

Great avatar! Yes, Bacon does taste different from Hass. (I can see why some cultures had and still do have different names for these types of fruit.) Essentially Gary Gragg put it best when he said sometimes you don't want to eat chocolate cake everyday. Interesting thing is that I noticed people from the islands appreciate Bacon usually more because it tastes closer to tropical or West Indian avocados. Good luck with your Bacon! What an exciting experiment!

What city? Jeff in Modesto has a good SirPrize. It seems that they have to get big first. The most important thing is regular watering especially when it is above 90. When above 90 I water daily. Essentially the watering schedule for avocados is the most important thing we can't get wrong.

I agree there are a lot in Oakland. They fill the Oaklando in buckets and sell them in a park off Mandela Parkway in the summer which was where I first got them. The flavor is like nothing else! We are grafting it in our FB group and hope to share the budwood and trees in the future.

I am curious how your Gems do. Up here we have been convinced that Gem is the "one" but to me Lamb already provides that same performance although it does seem to be alternate bearing when it produces they are like grape clusters. By the way, the comments on the Bay Giant Cannonball were from our conversation. Yes, doesn't like cold nights. Where it is, although cold, the water seems to keep it slightly warmer than where I am. Seems to be very Guatemalan!

Nice you do have a very wide range, I find the best grafting time same as you and then I have a narrow window in the fall before grafts go dormant in winter ,sometimes my grafts stay dormant and wake up in spring, SC gold and Edranol is also on my wish list, I have someone shipping me some ultra rare avo from northern Cal I will graft but I fear it might be too late in season for high success rate.

@@growyourownavocados we all have different taste buds so it's hard to describe. Very similar, for the first one that I got earlier this year. One thing to note, once the trees get older, the avocados start to taste better. Example my first gem was good but this year the gem tasted so much better.

Yes, it's ReEngineeredMemories! Which is why I added text. I always think of the channel as REM. Ok, interesting that in SJ you can eat them in January. Even in SoCal they usually wait until March which is why people are excited SC Gold. Thanks, it is noted. In cold parts of the Bay and I believe at Chetwyn they don't start picking the Hass until the summer. I have had my Lamb and Reed early and to my surprise they are still good but get better. Appreciate your input as usual.

@@growyourownavocados oh I didn’t see that should have looked closer. I’ve brought REM trees from Epicenter in 22 and 23. looking forward to hearing how SC gold does for you. My 2 year old is flowering and about 7ft tall right now. Chetwyn’s micro climate is quite different than mineI’ve walked their grove. Those trees take quite a beating with direct wind coming from the golden gate. They gave up on Fuerte where as my Fuerte are quite productive. So many microclimates in Bay Area.
@SVmathfarmer

@@growyourownavocados they can be eaten simultaneously. Fuerte is good at Thanksgiving and optimal at Xmas. Mexicola good at Halloween and optimal at Thanksgiving. I don’t grow bacon but I had a tree at my previous house in Santa Clara and February was always the big month to start eating.

I would try some grow lamps on some of your small trees in shaded areas if they can get up to sun faster it might be enough for them to take off.

Interesting that the Palo is in the most shade but seems the most vigorous. Palo D'Oro is like a weed.
@RareAvoTrees
@RareAvoTrees 3 ай бұрын
@@growyourownavocados it's likey because the health or vigor of the roots and not growing well from lack of sun, big box labels even say plant in full sun ,the trick is be carefull on young trees either sunshade them 30-50 percent shade cloth or paint white or both till leaves come in nice tight thick to protect trunk and branches.That takes approx 1 to 2 years depending on the vigor of the small tree.
@growyourownavocados

Palo is known for doing well in foggy cold or extremely hot areas. Appreciate the feedback. I haven't had any issues with the trees in that alley though in fact I think the Giant would like the warmer nights there. Lamb produces heavily and the Pinkerton and Reed thrived there too and did well. The Reed wanted to be tall and touch the roof so it had to go and the Pinkerton was excellent but compared to other varieties (Lamb) up here the crop just wasn't as heavy and I think it was because it flowers early but more than that they tasted best in June and then all fell off in June. I wanted the hang time if Palo but will probably graft Pinkerton to Palo. Thanks for the input. @RareAvoTrees

Sounds like a plan! Are you growing SC Gold? I imagine it would like Fresno. By the way, I agree on the Bay Giant Cannonball tree not being happy with the cold. I have visited the house a few times and it can difficult to find someone there.

The Lamb is over the 10 everything else us between 2 and 3 years old. I renovated my yard. I have a 2019 video where the trees are big but I changed everything once I was able to get almost any I wanted, got my grafting game down and decided to grow locals because not all SoCal trees thrive up here but obviously locals do.

That's wonderful about your seedling! Did you know that seedling is the only tree with that DNA? It is a child of Bacon but unless it was grafted it isn't a "pure breed" Bacon which means you get to name it! Thanks for the input. I am sure it is amazing!

@@growyourownavocados Yea, I know. The seed was taken from my parents 40 year old tree. I lucked out and the fruit is pretty much the same. But might have slightly different DNA in one way. The fruit is larger with smaller pits (Size of medium size grapefruits) (Win, Win) and still has creamy buttery flesh that tastes the same as my parents. Good luck with your young trees. FYI - I recently grafted Hass onto some of my Bacon branches. Looks like a few took.
