The old adage "you can cut more off but can't put it back on" particularly applies to fingers.

I remember when i was following along with your chessboard tutorial(i finished it btw, one of the best things I've ever made)my mom got me some gloves because i kept nicking myself, and the day after she got them, I thought "nahhh i just wont use them yet" AND THAT SAME DAY I ALMOST CUT MY THUMB OFF😭😭 Anyways wear your gloves guys👍

My hands were a mess even before I started wood carving LOL - I used work gloves in the past, but my carving gloves are helpful. Also - the few times, "Oh I'm just doing a few strokes, so I don't need my glove for something so quick." - Then *slice* oh I cut myself!!! Safety first people, safety first. Great vids as always.

I have tried tons of gloves for whittling, and the coated ones wear out. So I use the bandage wrap on the gloves at the thumb and pointer for added protection when I used them. Now I use leather gloves with reinforced leather pads on the tips. They don't wear out nearly as fast and give better grip. I soaked them and let them dry on my hands to get a perfect fit and they work for many other arts like hand and machine quilting, needle felting, crocheting, and while working on scroll saws or other woodworking projects.

I've cut myself once (so far 😬) and was very lucky - the knife slipped somehow, but I was wearing gloves AND it somehow managed to miss my thumb entirely, so instead stabbed point-first into my palm. Cut a hole through the glove and my skin but it could've been soooo much worse if I wasn't wearing gloves. Didn't even need stitches! Very glad I was wearing gloves! Wear them!!

started carving recently...and i was like, i got this don't need gloves! cut myself two time, one time a little in my finger because i wasnt paying attention..and the other time a deeper cut in my hand because the wood broke off, needed to bandage that up for a few days. learned my lesson, waiting on my gloves now😂

30 years ago I was testing my freshly sharpened Swiss Army Knife on a piece of wood. I was holding the wood and forcing the knife through the wood. Yah the tip sliced my palm next to my thumb 1/2” deep. 18 stitches and out of work for 2 weeks. So yah I wear Kevlar gloves now.

I was wearing gloves from the beginning but I think that actually made me become a little careless. Slipped and got a puncture cut (most gloves won't protect you from those) in my index finger. Got a few stitches but luckily it's just a scar. Still, now I'm wearing a glove PLUS some additional tape around my thumb and index finger.
@CarvingisFun Жыл бұрын
I can see that happening, but ya punctures are hard to prevent with just gloves. Thankfully it wasn't too terribly bad.

Isnt it also possible to also cut your right pointer finger? Should i get a bandage or glove for that too?

Depends on how your handling the knife, but from my experiences it isn't necessarily

I use gloves on the non dominant hand but can t bear myself to use tape on the dominant one. I feel like the friction is way off and it feels very unprecise

I am looking at getting a basic set of tools and was looking at Flexcut. They offer a Rockler handle with interchangeable blades, do you have any experience with these?

If you carve you will absolutely cut yourself! I use super glue for smaller cuts 2 to 3 stitches any over that I go to the doc. Also depends how deep you cut yourself. Wear gloves and use the tape it helps a ton!

Haha shame were not in the same county as i always have an abundance of left gloves as wear them when im weeding ("professional" gardener) and always wear out the fingers on the right hand maybe 2 pairs in a good month if i dont lose them! To be fair though i hate wearing gloves for most thing even dealing with roses and thorns I prefer to feel what im doing and hate that disconnect so definitely dont for carving BUT my hands look like they belong to a troll or something so not so much collateral

I cut myself, I damaged the nerves on the tip of my index finger. But I still don't wear a glove 😅 I don't know, it's just kinda uncomfortable, plus I've only cut myself once, so I like to think I'm pretty careful with the knife, hope I don't get any more serious cuts 🤞
