I'm still driving the 1996 Dodge Ram 4x4 I bought new for 21K. Has 230k miles on it now. No truck payment for 23 years. Always did my own preventive maintenance. In 2015 I replaced the axles, axle bearings, metal and rubber brake lines, U-joints, shocks. 2019 seat covers, dash from LMC truck. Replaced headliner. Just last week replaced the timing chain, water pump, hoses, thermostat. Did the chain just in case and boy it was ready. This truck has been so rock solid for all these years. Simple. Reliable. Still same engine and transmission. It's getting tired, but hanging in there. They don't build them like this anymore. I have never needed or wanted a truck with all the fancy crap. I work this thing hard.

Love it. Congrats, man. Wish I had those kind of skills.
@Bill-q2c2 ай бұрын
@@Alstanus you just need mechanical aptitude and patience. Good tools makes for a good end result. Doing my Dodge 5.2L engine just required a 9/16" socket or combination wrench for most bolts on the timing cover and alternator bracket. 1-1/4" socket and impact wrench to remove the harmonic balance bolt. A puller to remove the harmonic balance and the upper timing chain gear. Get the fan shroud and fan off. Fan nut was a bit tough without the special tool. I used propane torch to heat the nut a bit and then hit a adjustable wrench with a hammer and the nut broke free. It unscrews counter clockwise. Get the timing cover off along with water pump. Remove the spark plugs so easy to turn the engine by hand. Fit the harmonic balance back on enough just so you can turn engine by hand until you get the timing marks on the timing gears pointing at each other. It's dots on each gear. Remove old gears and timing chain. Hold the new chain hanging in your hand and set the gears inside the chain making sure the timing marks on the gears will be aligned when you slide the new chain set into place. Slip the chain set in place. The key slots of the new gears should fit exactly as the old gears where oriented. The timing marks (dots) should be pointed at each other. Put some red thread locker on the upper timing gear bolt and torque to about 35 foot pounds. The bolt will pull the upper gear firmly into place as you tighten it. Install a new oil seal in the timing cover. Reinstall the timing cover using new gasket and red form a gasket at the bottom reusing the half moon shaped old rubber seal that sets on the front of the oil pan. I first bolted the new water pump to the timing cover using the three bolts that don't pass through the cover so the water pump was in place as I bolted on the timing cover. Install the harmonic balance. Red Thread locker on balance bolt. 135 foot pounds torque. Go back with new radiator hoses and new thermostat. Replace that small hose at the top of the water pump. They are difficult to access later after the alternator/A/C compressor bracket is bolted in place. Might as well replace them while things are easy to access. It's not rocket science. Install new spark plugs. I marked the plug wire locations (firing order) on each wire plug so I could easily plug back the plug wires. Tip... before you install the thermostat, install the lower radiator hose, then fill the radiator until you see the antifreeze up to the hole where the thermostat sits. Then you know you've bleed air out the system. Now install the thermostat and gooseneck. Install new upper radiator hose after the fan shroud is back in place. Your truck is ready for another couple hundred thousand miles.

The auto industry as a whole is in for serious pain over the next few months. I work at tier 2 supplier. This time of year we are normally ramping up as the industry pumps out cars for the new model year. We’re idling production and furloughing employees over the next two months. In the 20+ years I’ve worked here, we’ve NEVER idled production at this time of year. Aug-Jan is the busy season. There is so much 2024 stock still sitting on lots (and even some 2023) that the industry is massively cutting back production for 2025. Orders for Sept and Oct absolutely nosedived. Down between 30-50 percent. It looks no better and in some ways worse over the next 3-4 months. I don’t know when that stabilizes and starts to come back.

I avoid anything made post 2018. I paid off my 16 JK Rubicon 6spd that I ordered new 4.5 years ago and have been dailying it for 202k miles. Still runs like a top. I decided to retire it to summer/off-road toy duty and started looking at full size pickups to use in the winters and for towing and hauling. Ended up buying a super clean, well cared for 17 Ram 2500 Big Horn the other weekend. It seemed way better built than the newer trucks that were more than 2 or 3x times as expensive. Splitting the mileage between the two now will hopefully mean I’ll have both for years to come at a fraction of the price. All these cost cuts and glitchy new tech is for the birds. A truck just needs to be a truck.

I argued during the pandemic when stealerships were tacking on market adjustments (aka screwing their own customers) that we would not only see excess inventory, but also steep discounts. It was only a matter of time before the greedy bubble burst. The KZbin “experts “ told me we had no choice and the prices would stay elevated and the adjustments would never go away. Corporate management allowed the dealers to do this and they are just as guilty. Reep those taxes on all of that year end inventory.

But just a few months ago we started seeing discounts finally on Gladiators. So in the end of Aug. we bought a beautiful Gladiator Sport S hardtop automatic, in granite crystal metallic, with safety and convenience packages that came with heated seats and steering wheel, ACC automatic cruise control and backup protection warning and lane change warning. The only option I could not get was max tow. The MSRP was just over $51k, but we got it for $36k! A great deal for a fantastic vehicle.

I don't see Nissan doing that. In fact they made more things standard on the 2025 frontier and the new refresh has some meaningful upgrades which I could not avoid if I were in the market. The frontier has the same old F-Alpha box frame that is built like a tank at the same old Canton Plant in Mississippi. There really is only one thing they took away and that is the bed rails on the floor. They deleted those in 2022 and one might also say they dropped the roof rack on the Pro 4X premium package. But those items do not make the truck less capable or less reliable. Not like how oems like Toyota purposely under-built the underpinnings to beef up margins. I don't see that crap from Nissan. Not even remotely so.
@Jason-Samko2 ай бұрын
nissan frontier is agreat truck. but odnt let them fool you. They are all playing these games. pro4x added very little in the refresh and went up 3500 bucks for 2025. @@Jason-Samko Maybe. But my dealer has 58 on the ground. I'm pretty sure I could get at least 2500 or more off MSRP if I were in the market. OEM's are cutting back production but inventories are still up. I think everything before the elections is in limbo. House sales are flat as well as auto. People don't know what to expect and many are already stretched on too much debt. Mass layoffs are just beginning to take off. If anything I would hold off buying until the end of the year or Jan 31 which is a good time before tax season. Look at the new tacos. Brand new generation but they have to already discount them which is unheard of for the mighty Yota.

It seems simple but I want the STX with 5.0 V8 and the max towing package and the “office” package so it has 110 volt outlets. And want the towing mirrors. No dealers in my area stock F-150’s with towing mirrors, and adding them seems to be somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000 (not sure). I have looked online at 15 or 20 dealers and none have exactly my setup even without the tow mirrors. I think I will special order exactly what I want, which at this point will be a 2025.
