Depending on where you are from, you may not even realize that you're already walking on eggshells. It's just that you know where most of the eggshells are and how to avoid them. Given some time, you'd probably learn how to stay very safe in the Philippines. Personally, I always felt like I was in far more danger in most large American cities than I ever did in the Philippines. There are many areas of the U.S. that I would not set foot in.

1) Don't try to date a filipina AND her sister (or her mother). 2) Don't break up with a filipina and tell her the reason is that she's "just not pretty enough." 3) Don't tell your filipina that you are hiring a maid because you want someone who actually knows how to cook and clean.

Great video Paul. You laid out the biggest ways to get in trouble. For me it’s very simple. Leave the combative intensity that exists in the US at home. Also, no matter what, always pause before saying or doing anything in responses. The biggest problem I see expats make is being “impulsive” with women or anything else. Slow down. Respond instead of reacting. Also RESPECT the people, the moment, the conversation. The person in front of you that you are talking to is not your ex girlfriend, ex wife, mom, etc. I always respect people. If I don’t like something I just remove myself from the situation. There’s no need to battle like in the US. Enjoy the moment. I don’t drink or go to bars and that helps. Be responsible for your actions! There’s so much to enjoy in the Phillipines and any other SE Asian country. Focus on that.

Good advice all around. When I moved to Thailand, my Thai father-in-law told me it cost $20 to hire a motorcycle assassin, so keep that in mind before you do some of the things you mention in your video (cause someone to lose face, visit the wrong places, get involved with the wrong girl, etc.). I love the Thai people and they love me, though in order to reach that point I had to grow out of my American perspective on many things. Thank you!

Good video. Well, I have traveled to many places during my 40 years of work and play. Mexico on a regular basis. Hawaii a few times, South American jungle countries. The most important thing I have learned is this. Never publically show that you are lost! Always work at looking like you own the place! If you need help with directions always use a hotel clerk or police station! Never remove a large amount of cash from your wallet in public! And never break this rule no matter how bad you want to, DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO KIDS IN THE STREETS if you must go to a food store and buy them food.

Years ago, the uncle and grandfather of my girlfriend in northern Mindanao were murdered over some sort of a 'disagreement'. In southern Mindanao, a brother of my friend was 'accidently' murdered in a case of 'mistaken identity'. Whoops. I've traveled throughout north, central and south America. Americans (NOT ALL - but many) tend to be the most unruly, loud and obnoxious individuals I have met while traveling. For G-d's sake, take a low, private and quiet profile. By contrast, Deutsche girls tend to travel alone without incident. They are almost always respectful and quiet. They do not argue about any bills. They may grimace and complain under their breath - but are never loud or obnoxious. Take a lesson from their script...

Dale from Seattle: A very good list. I don't have anything meaningful to add. I do feel safer here where I am now living, then I ever felt in the Seattle area. But as you suggest, there are things you just should not do here. Getting involved in fights with the family of your wife or girl friend, well as you say, it may not end well. And the truth is this: Her family is very likely to be jellos of you, resent you, and hate you no matter what good you do for them or money and things you give them. They will still hate you while smiling at you. I know this for a fact.

When foreigners going to understand that they cannot own land in the Philippines. 60/40 is not ownership, the Filipina owns 60% and the foreigners is 40%. Something goes wrong she gets it all. Her family wants to move in or her new found love wants to move in. There’s many things can happen and very little can be done about it. It’s his money but her property, if she is not the right one he is in trouble . A condominium is what can be bought 100% by a foreigner. Foreigners should tell the truth, if they don’t know the laws, it’s easy to look it up. Can foreigners own land legally? NO! 40% is not complete ownership.

And other KZbinrs say it's hard to come up with content, I have never seen a video on this subject matter 🤣 Might be a dark subject, but definitely a necessary one. A lot of these are common sense things, but with the way the world is going now, that seems to be in VERY short supply. One word came to mind, HUMBLE, don't brag and be flashy, don't try to make yourself look better than someone else is for your own ego trip. Your ego will NOT hold up to a machete wielding local running towards you. After a few near death experiences while deployed to Afghanistan, it has made me guarded and cautious of those around me, it takes a while for me to open up to anyone and trust is even harder to gain. Maybe a video on CENOMAR (Certificate of No Marriage) would be good, try to get the word out about them to those who never heard of it, so they don't end up being with a married woman and put themselves in a bad situation. If she won't get one, even if you offer to pay for it (I believe they're relatively cheap), MOVE ON. If she says she's going to get an annulment or in the process of it, MOVE ON, she is still married, and the annulment process can take years and upwards of $10,000 (DOLLARS NOT Pesos), it's not your problem to deal with. Me personally, I wouldn't be with a single mother, nothing against them, but it can bring a LOT of problems and add stress you don't need to add to yourself. As you said the child's father, finds out she's with a foreigner he may all of a sudden take a greater interest in the child he walked away from or be expecting a big pay day; you have no authority over HER child, you can't discipline them; HER child will ALWAYS come 1st over you; her time and attention is dedicated to her child and you are an after thought.

But as you said, we are cautious about where we go and what we are doing, as we are at home in Los Angeles too! We know where we can go and avoid being places that are prone to criminal activity. In Manila, tourist areas are generally safe and you don’t need to worry, but use good common sense. Stay sober and don’t walk around alone if possible.

I grew up with the mindset of being humble. I was also taught to rationalize. If someone makes a derogatory statement to me, I often shrug my shoulders, accept that they are entitled to their opinion, and attempt to process any data that might be gleaned from it. Exactly, don’t get mad at someone running their mouth. It is always better to just walk away. If the situation looks like it will turn physical then stand your ground. Don’t be an easy target or you will be a target over and over again. What filipinos call saving face is actually losing face. They will lie over nothing. Ask one for directions and if he doesn’t know he will make up some crap instead of really saving face and saying he doesn’t know. Makes no sense no matter what side of the world you are on. Once you lie to me, you have lost face.

Also, according to Philippines law, the foreigner cannot be alone with the filipina's children and it doesn't matter if she is separated. As mentioned the separated deal will just add time to your prison sentence. It she is separated or has children, run. 🏃‍♂🏃‍♂🏃🏃

dont argue with the natives.. they will know where you live, and for cheap, someone would happily cause an "accident".. if you cant see someone coming from 100yds away, i wouldnt be walking that street. if you have an issue with someone, anyone, talk to them privately, politely, almost as if you are sorry for having to even mention it, as if it causes YOU "to lose face" in doing so, conciliatory attitude is everything in some places. good tips.. .keep your temper,, better yet, keep your mouth closed..

@@ragjamrock It's some kind of astonishing outlier of a thing because as a pretty strong rule, throughout most any middle/upper middle class neighborhood that would be shocking news to happen just once to one person and the chances of it happening twice.. and this is someone actually shoving a gun in your chest.. this is astonishing rare but bad luck. It would be fair to assume the police did NOT believe you the second time you phoned 911 and reported it. They must have suspected you were lying and up to something like maybe you gambled away your paycheck and invented this 'gunpoint mugging' story both times. Of course, even though the chances of that ever happening to anyone in their entire lives in nearly every and all US middle class comfortable neighborhoods is incredibly unlikely - yes its true that it can happen and has happened anywhere. Why did you need to make that point though? Did you think people were viewing this and might have thought "OH NO.. Deadly Crime only happens in the Philippines!' Do you really think that's how stupid viewers really are? So stupid that you needed to make a point and tell them "Hey.. heads up.. crime happens all over the world too!". That's what absolutely stupid low IQ buffoons YOU BELIEVE must be watching this video?

From this video, I got the impression that the Philippines is a dangerous country to live or to visit. Then I remembered having read on line the Gallup’s latest Global Law and Order Report. From what I know, Gallup is a US consultancy firm based in Washington. I googled the said report. This was what I find out. Overall, Singapore was the safest country with a law and order index score of 96. The Philippines was on the 30th spot with a score of 85. It is tied with France, Hongkong, Croatia and Slovakia. The US ranked 41st with a score of 83. It is tied with Italy, Germany, Armenia and Lithuania. The other Southeast asian countries ranking: Indonesia, 5th (92); Vietnam, 29th (86), Cambodia, 40th (84); Laos, 50th (82); Malaysia, 52nd (81); Thailand, 77th (76); Myanmar, 85th, (73)

What amazes me in the philippines is how easy it is to get dragged into one of these unpleasant situations. Outside a pharmacy in Caloocan where i went to buy medicine for my wifes cold were 3 street boys who wanted a handout. When i told them no and to move on they got pissed. I was lucky there was a filipino cop nearby who saw the whole incident come down and took them to jail. This aint the USA folks. Dont for a minute think you can beat these punks. Yes you may win the fight only to loose it later on. I also have seen punk girls become aggressive and demanding too. Fortunately the cops try to watch out for the foreigners.
