Language is the biggest deal for me. I’m not the most ‘social’ of people, but at this (later) stage of my life I’d much rather be able to deal in English when it comes to transactions/shopping/medical situations.Philippines is a good balance of familiar/exotic for me.

Here's where I start drifting. Over the past year or more, I've learned that going anywhere in that part of the world on an extended basis brings with it plenty of opportunity to find yourself up the perverbial creek without a canoe, never mind a paddle. Even in your efforts to upsale the idea, you list warning issues. The older I get, the less tolerance I have for taking chances, language differences, or cultural considerations. I'm set in my ways and just don't want to deal with it. I understand you've spent a lot of time in that part of the world, but has World Zoom spent time in friendly countries? How about Sweden, Norway, Denmark? Not that I'm interested in wandering that direction either. Hell, my back is so messed up lately that Walmart is a major effort. Guess I'm just grumbling today.

Thai visa is way better than the Philippines. Thailand gives you 60 days on arrival, with an optional 30 days to extend. After that you can take an hour flight to Vietnam and turn right back around. Philippines only give you 30 days, than you have to pay for another 30 days. After that you are forced to buy a stupid ACR card, and you have to renew every 2 months. Philippines is now interrogating all expats every two months as to why you need to be in the country. Philippines do to much. I'm so over it. Thai for the win, all day every day.

So Myks Philippines Journey is the Rat! I thought for sure it was Mark with the glasses. The Myk guy is freak anyway! I just got back from the Philippines last month after being there for two months with my girlfriend/fiancée. We just got her U.S. tourist visa approved as she was an OFW for ten years which helped with the process. She from the small island of Pilar in the Comotes Islands near Leyte. She is truly really hot and one of those rare 5'7" beautiful island filapinas that you pinch yourself to realize your so lucky. Nedless to say we steer clear of Dumaguete and that soap opera of old turds who think because they have some little KZbin channel there some type of celebrity! What a joke ,90% are broke old men who made no money in there lifetime and were barely scrapping by there until they started getting there couple thousand or a little moe from KZbin. You had a good career and made good money like me and I continue to make good money with my own company and I just turned fifty and my island girl just turned thirty eight and looks twenty five, tops. Yes you committed a felony and did some bad things but you paid the price and did your time but still was hired back into a very professional position. Jealousy is a big instigator and Myk is a prime example.

Well, shucks y'all, seems like them countries in South East Asia ain't doin' too good in the honesty department! Here's the list from the most crooked to the least crooked, according to them fancy folks at Transparency International: 1. Cambodia - they're so corrupt, they make a snake oil salesman look honest! 2. Myanmar - they're slicker than a greased pig at a county fair! 3. Indonesia - their corruption is bigger than a hog at a state fair! 4. Vietnam - they're as shady as a moonshine still in the backwoods! 5. Philippines - they're as crooked as a dog's hind leg! 6. Laos - they're sneakier than a raccoon in a cornfield! 7. Thailand - they're sketchier than a used car salesman in a plaid suit! 8. Malaysia - they're fishier than a catfish in a muddy pond! 9. Brunei - they're as slippery as a mudcat in a creek! 10. Timor-Leste - they're as crooked as a mountain road in a hailstorm! Well, I reckon them countries better clean up their act before they end up in more trouble than a raccoon in a henhouse!

Vietnam hehehe. I wouldn’t want to go to hail there. I was married to a Vietnamese woman. All the bribes they have to pay even at the airport they ask her to buy them a coffee. They don’t do foreigners like that but the locals normally have to pay bribes when they get pulled over. My wife went to the police station with a family member to report a camera stolen not hers but the family members. They walked in and the police had this man tied at the wrists with his arms above his head. The rope coming from the ceiling holding him up. He was all bloody and they weee beating the crap out of him. You go to jail there and make it out to tell the take why you’ll have a story to tell for sure..

I totally agree that the BI jumped the gun and detained you for the wrong reason. It seems odd they did not do due diligence. I note you say that they backtracked and then said they held you because you are an undesirable. I disagree with you that they did not have the right to do this. I beg to differ that the statute of limitations precludes the BI from taking your US criminal convictions into account. It is my opinion that they can take these into an account and that there is no time limit on these. I also beg to differ with your opinion that the convictions are of a type that should not have mattered. Clearly your crimes were crimes of moral turpitude which is a perfectly valid reason to prohibit your entry to the Philippines. Anyway, what is done is done. Don't dwell. Move forward and make a positive difference with the time you have left on this earth.

So, if they were basically holding you illegally for bribes, you should have escaped. In doing so, you would not have done something illegal since there was no charge against you. Those agents would not have been in a legal position to chase you in the city or go all the way to your condo. They would not have taken the risk or spent any resources to do that. You played along and they were glad you did, and each time you coughed up some cash, they saw another opportunity to ask for more. Plain and simple. Do you know who are the first friends you should make when moving to the Philippines, the mayor, the police chief, the local politician and the barangay captain. Those are your real friends, if you get them on your side, if you know what I mean.

Hi Paul. While I respect my girlfriend’s values, I am struggling with the lack of sex in our relationship. I am 27 and she is 25. We have been together for almost three years and, although we are very close and intimate, we are not having sex. My girlfriend is Muslim and, though I acknowledge her beliefs, I am finding it very difficult to go without sex. I love her very much. We are good together. I don’t want to put pressure on her but it is increasingly difficult for me, especially when I am so attracted to her. I have sexual urges which I am struggling to control. We both live with our parents.I have had sex with previous partners but my girlfriend says it is against her religion. I am going along with that because I don’t want to end the relationship or get hurt, but physically I am struggling. What do you think I should do?

I knew a guy in AC who was accused of being the manager of a bar as it was being raided for possible human trafficking charges which in the Phils is an un-bailable offense. The guy ended up being charged with that offense even though he was never a bar manager anywhere in AC, but nonetheless, spent 7 months in the notorious Jail #174 in Angeles City. The only reason he was let out in advance of the charges being dropped was because he was losing it mentally. Thankfully, WZ, at least, doesn't show the mental scarring of being illegally detained because in that situation some people become convinced they'll never be released and will spend their entire life jailed for something that they didn't do.

If you are not in a very strong relationship or marriage with a Filipina who has multiple fairly high ranking PNP family members, then anything can happen to you in the Philippines. I am very fortunate to be in this type of situation. I was checked out from top to bottom by her PNP brothers, PNP sister-in-law, PNP brother-in-law, PNP uncles, as well as by their NBI friends. 3 years later, I am fully accepted and thought highly of by her immediate and extended family. I don't worry about getting any trumped-up charges against me, but if I ever did, I would not spend one night in jail. In the Philippines, power perceived is power achieved.
