First off, you're doing a wonderful job. The pronunciation of “sync” or “think”, however, is something regional. Dealing with such differences is a problem of great complexity. This is why most dictionaries show standard forms, which, of course, doesn't mean other pronunciations are plain wrong. They are just different according to the region.

It is not a long i sound in "sync". It's a short i.

I humbly suppose that both phrases are correct: signal is weak and signal is beaking up. The first phrase means that the quality of the signal is poor (you can hear some noise, scarcely audible voice etc.) the second phrase means that the call is inaudible AT TIMES (you can hear only some fragments). Please correct, if I am wrong. Thanks in advance!

I’m so grateful to you, dear Kevin and Liza. I’m not a native speaker and sometimes (almost all the time😁) I don’t notice all these mistakes You notice and explain to us. Thanks.

Many native speakers pronounce SYNC as /si:ŋk/ because of an effect produced by the N when followed by G or K making it sound /ŋ/. The articulation of /ŋ/ is similar to the articulation of Y which is transcribed in IPA as /j/ -- YOUNG is transcribed as /jʌŋ/. Words like SYNC, THINK, etc. are transcribed as /sɪŋk/ and /θɪŋk/ respectively, but the /ŋ/ makes them sound /sɪʲŋk/ and /θɪʲŋk/. This /ʲ/ effect also occurs to /æ/ as in BANK /bæʲŋk/making it sound like /beɪŋk/. It does not occur to any other vowel sound. Not every native speaker in the United States pronounces THINK as /θi:ŋk/ or /θɪʲŋk/, or BANK as /bæʲŋk/ or /beɪŋk/ -- most who do, don't even notice it.

True. Kevin shouldn't have claimed that the i sound in sink/think is the same long i found in green beans.

Today I found out that the word 'cranky' in American English means bad-tempered/irritable. I thought it means eccentric or strange. Someone called a person that which I had to look up why and it added up

I am having a hard time understanding the difference between ' used to+ an infinitive verb ' and ' was / were used to+ a gerund ' . Can I use them interchangeably? Do they have the same meaning and usage?
@vladimirbaloyan4409 ай бұрын

They’re completely different. ‘You’re used to doing something’ means you’re accustomed to it or it’s no longer difficult for you!
You're wrong. Sync and green/beans don't have the same sound. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, sync is pronounced as /sɪŋk/ with a shorter ɪ sound. Green /ɡriːn/ is pronounced with a longer iː sound.

What if the Internet has stopped working complitely, what do we say then? We can't use "break up" in this situation, can we? May be some combination with the word " cut"?

You 're doing a great job teaching English. But please, think, sink, link are pronounced with a short /i/ sound. You don't need to be a native speaker to know that. Just watch a film or a random video on KZbin. These are very common words.

00:20 WRONG! We don't always use "the" with country's name. We don't say: the Russia, the China, etc. We only use the with the name of particular countries, such as the Netherlands, the Philippines and those consisting two or more words, such as USA. Make a correction, please!!!
