// My Story
I am currently a software developer who once modeled and thought I wanted to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While I was modeling in Hong Kong, I eventually felt the desire to further my education. I decided to depart the modeling world and move back to Canada, knowing that could be the end of my modeling opportunities. I attended Ryerson University for GCM (Graphic Communications Management), as I thought I might still work in the fashion industry in another capacity. It was in my last year of university, I was introduced to a very basic coding course. I instantly fell in love. From there I knew I wanted to pursue software development but didn't have a clue where to start. I didn't want to go back to university as I just completed a four-year degree. I decided to enroll in a 10-week intensive coding Bootcamp. From there I started working at a small startup learning and growing my technical and soft skills. I then transitioned to a larger company where I am a software developer and technical consultant today.

I think a big one is resume formatting. Gotta make sure your resume is ATS compliant and readable by a machine. I thought my resume was great while I was getting zero bites on job apps, until I realized it couldn't be read by an ATS. Best way to do that, in my opinion, is to write your resume in LaTeX (markup used to write academic papers), which can easily be done by building off of free templates online (Overleaf). Plus, it looks super neat.

So true!! Thanks for sharing. Yup formatting is truly a big thing that is often overlooked

1. You are applying for jobs, you are not qualified for. 2. Not tailoring your resume & cover letter for the targeted position. 3.Not using your network, Just reach out to people. 4. Prep for screening calls, but don't be a robot.

I could not agree more with this. I actually just landed my first job in tech and I'm so excited. I just finished an Npower course in December. So many people talk about everything else, but you are so right. People hire people. You can learn, just show your interest and enthusiasm. Great video. I'm sure it will be very helpful.

Great video Tiff! I've been following you for a while now and it's great to see you grow and become more confident/comfortable as a creator. I'm in my senior year in a post-bacc CS program and am on the hunt for a summer '23 internship so I'll definitely be taking these tips into account as I continue to apply and (fingers crossed) interview.

Don't forget, employers will often write their ad copy with the perfect candidate in mind. They know that not everyone who applies is going to have everything they are looking for. I like what you say about employers looking for personable people, something that I think will really help me land my fist development job. I am extremely worried about the behavioral interview questions (STAR format). I am horrible with those. Can you create a video on how to tackle these difficult questions?

Hi Tiff! Thank you for the tips, love your content! I'm personally having a hard time getting interviews after graduating from a bootcamp 3 months ago. I would love if you could share some tips for how to handle rejection and stay motivated during the job search process? Cheers from Argentina!

Thank you! I have been there when after a bootcamp it feels like forever in landing your first job in tech. Just remember that even 3 months of job hunting is normal (especially in this market right now) make sure to time off of job hunting to give yourself some rest too. It will come with time, usually it happens right whe you want to give up! Stay positive and remember to be kind to yourself :)

I've had that problem before, that's why I made a platform that pushes developers to work on their own startup or join a startup to gain more experience or continue building their startup into a big company. I created the platform because a lot of developers give up because they can't find a job in their field. so I came up with this solution to give developers more hope in their journey.

When someone says you require x amount of years of experience to obtain x position and the canditate responds ... How can I obtain it if nobody gives me a chance, I would automatically disqualify them. There is volunteer work, internships, community projects, school clubs and personal projects that would allow anyone to gain required experience. An excuse as to why they don't have experience is grounds for immediate disqualification. It demonstrates lack of self-discipline, lack of passion and lack of self-investment in ones personal growth. Volunteer experience in a relevant field is more important than a masters or phd degree when it comes to jobs that require hands on experience. Top tech giants don't care about your academic awards or if you were the class president. All they care about is your productivity, self-discipline and efficiency with proof to back it up.

Fantastic video, Tiff!! ... But, you know, I dislike networking and using connections. I would never do that. It feels like cheating and favoritism. Getting a job, just because I know someone ... that's the idea I refuse. I know it's a common thing, but I don't like it at all. I would rather be unemployed and poor than using my connections. You know, I have a PhD degree (not in tech), but I wouldn't beg for a job. I'm too proud. lol (I graduated with honors) lol ... And no one wanted to hire me and never told me why exactly. No feedback. Nothing. But I would rather be homeless than beg for a job and using my connections. lol ... This is not criticism. I love your videos and your channel! Cheers! (Btw. I'm not from the US, I'm from the EU).

Thanks Harry! That is a nice outlook too - yes definitely it is too bad that we live in a world where there is a lot of emphasis on connections instead of it being totally fair. I hear what you are saying! Appreciate your support and insight! :)

Yeah but the potential employer and or potential labour market must not undermine the the actual labour market and or actual employment market with experience hires and then set the requirements to get hired to high for me and oor anyone else to get a job and then put in like hundreds of hours of learning resources with a pace maker and a paywall.

Vibe. Random anecdote im passing on. Been interviewing heavily. Of the 15 interviews I've done so far, only one gave me a take home python project. The rest never even tested my python, but 100% tested SQL. They are data engineering positions. The one project ask I got was great, turned it into a repo and have committed like 20 times to it in a week. Should I just keep up looking at more software engineer focused stuff? Look outside of indeed? I mostly do etl, automation, metric tracking with python/sql

As a guy who got 2 offers within one and a half months, applied 100~250 applications per day and did 2~3 interviews per weekday, all I can say add is: 1. Never say no when they asked "Do you have...?". Then proceed to create an example if they asked 2. Make yourself look good and tidy. I don't care about your views or political opinion, but your look does matter 3. Learn to BS, even if it sounds ridiculous. If you don't, you don't get the job. In the financial world, this is called "marketing" actually 4. Do what Tiff said, but with ChatGPT to tailor your CV/cover letter
