// My Story
I am currently a software developer who once modeled and thought I wanted to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While I was modeling in Hong Kong, I eventually felt the desire to further my education. I decided to depart the modeling world and move back to Canada, knowing that could be the end of my modeling opportunities. I attended Ryerson University for GCM (Graphic Communications Management), as I thought I might still work in the fashion industry in another capacity. It was in my last year of university, I was introduced to a very basic coding course. I instantly fell in love. From there I knew I wanted to pursue software development but didn't have a clue where to start. I didn't want to go back to university as I just completed a four-year degree. I decided to enroll in a 10-week intensive coding Bootcamp. From there I started working at a small startup learning and growing my technical and soft skills. I then transitioned to a larger company where I am a software developer and technical consultant today.

Yeah, those salaries due seem a little too high in my humble opinion. But then again I'd be happy working as a programmer getting 10% more then I am getting now as I am hoping this new year will finally be the start of my new career as a software developer! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

You might want to also look at other sources that are more crowdsourced for their salary data to get a more holistic comparison. Glassdoor is one such source.

Those salaries seem high. Is it salary or compensation? Oh and what title are you? Engineer, architect, front end developer. Cause those seem like positions on the top. The architecture is important I didn't see that one for high pay like the ones shown granted engineer's are important as well.

I stressed at the beginning it was total compensation! 😊 not just base salaries! The levels.fyi report is engineering which is shown in the images in screen! I have been a software developer for 5+ years and just moved into a developer relations role! Never want to be misleading so I tried to ensure this was clear in the video before diving into the report! It’s really insightful definitely worth checking out. Thanks for your questions!

Question! If you were offered a remote job, does the salary goes based off where you live(locality)? Or based on what they usually give to the employer based on the years of experience you have? Or both?
@TiffInTech
@TiffInTech Жыл бұрын
It depends - some companies do based on where you are located some go based on where they are located. And yes your level of experience definitely is taken into consideration too!

Hi Tiff, I watched your latest videos. Actually, I have been meaning to ask you the following questions. 1. What can Front-end Developers do in case they encounter a lot of front-end developer positions that also require backend during their job-hunting journey? (Note: he or she is not interested in backend and only has basic backend skills) 2. If the only solution for Front-end Developer to successfully land a Front-end job is to learn and be good at backend, therefore how can one be self-employed and make money besides freelancing, blogs, and open source contribution? Looking forward to your helpful responses, thank you.

I've used Databricks, pretty much a common Jupyter environment but with "native" spark, it's awesome, basically turn on the cluster and you have spark. Not so expensive either. Lets you avoid all the gibberish you have to set up first before using a spark session.

Thank you for the advice Tiff! I’m going to take the Frontend Meta course, and I have my bachelor’s in Physics. I do have some programming experience from university as well. Question about the Engineering positions: Do those generally require a software engineering degree or am I going to be qualified for this role once I’ve taken some online courses like the ones offered by Meta on Coursera? TYIA!!🤍
@TiffInTech
@TiffInTech Жыл бұрын
Hi Brittany! Great question and that is awesome you are taking the courses by meta. Are you enjoying them? And for most companies they care less about a specific type of degree for software developers and more about if you are able to do that work! So it is totally fine to not have a degreee in software engineering!
